The 2nd Gen Projects Thread

The purpose of this thread is to allow all members to show off their major 2nd gen related projects in one easy to find place. The aim is to keep a current thread of all running projects organized and in one spot. Not only will this show off some of the excellent work being done here, but it will provide a common thread to which to refer to when looking for ideas or when the "what can I do to my car?" question come up. There are so many great project threads but they all disappear eventually as new topics take their place. It's a shame that they are not archived somewhere, which is why I made this thread.

The projects in this thread have been submitted by the members of this forum. If you would like to have your project included here or have an update to an existing project, please send a private message to Aaron Cake. If you have any updates to a project that is posted here, send a PM and this thread will be updated.

This thread is for major long term projects. For example, a full TII swap into an NA would qualify, while bolting on an exhaust would not. Now if that exhaust was fabricated from scratch and documented, that would be a major project. A picture of a custom made cold air intake is not a major project, but a thread containing good pictures and description of that intake being constructed is, especially if it is part of a larger design (ie. standalone, porting, etc.). Standalone installs are a major project. Installing a Greddy (or any "bolt in") intercooler kit is not unless it is part of a greater whole. Good pictures and documentation is the key and what makes these project threads really interesting reading. See what I'm getting at? Some leeway will be made for those first projects that everyone is so proud of but we don't need 10 pages of exhaust installs.

The projects linked here are in alphabetical order.

Hi guys here is my new seven. A red 91 coupe with only 80k miles on the body. The motor has blown coolant seals but the motor in my blk car only has 6k or 7K miles on it. This car is an auto so I'm gonna do the five speed swap. It's pretty much gutted except for the front carpet, dash, door panels, and a passenger seat. The body is nice and straight though it just needs a paint job, but I got that covered. I plan on doing a cutsom wideboy. It's gonna be pretty mild, jus something to fit bigger rims inside there. Pretty much I'm bringing everything over from my 89 GTU to this 91 coupe. My GTU has fram damage from a drifting accident that happened in december. I can still beat on it and I still do. In fact I hid the damage pretty well. But I can't wait to get started on this thing. Here are some pics of it. This is only the beginning and I will record it's steps using this blog.

My Project 2nd Gen Multi Purpose Toy
I wanted a car that I could use for Drag Racing, Drifting, Circuit events and of course street use. I have achieved this and I have done everything myself. Its been a huge learning curve as i'm not a mechanic. Everything has been done on a budget and although this thread is just for a new engine, over the last 2 years I have also done the following:
Polybushed completely
Big brakes
Uprated Sway Bars
Coil Overs
Water injection
Uprated (rubber) Engine, Gearbox & Diff Mounts
Home Built exhaust and pipe work
all the engine porting and rebuilds myself
It runs a Power FC for an FD with a modified loom.

I bought this car for 900 dollars off craigslist, knowing that it was modified, but had blown an apex seal on the rear rotor. The guy told me that it had just been rebuilt, but was made to race, and blew its seal. I had just had my old (crappy) car impounded, so i got it and decided i would buy seals and rebuild my motor.

The new style!
I have begun the preparations for my new motor today. I am having Arizona Rotay Rockets(www.azrr.com) build me a new streetport motor for my FC.
The motor is going to be built with: S5 side and rotor housings. I got a set of used S5 side housings with the rear housing being the reinforced one(same casting as the 13BRE). I am using new rotor housings for the build. I am going to be running S4 rotors. The E-shaft is a new Renesis shaft(0.6lb lighter than the 13B one). The stationary gears are from an FD with 10 window bearings. I am going with a FD flywheel due to it being stronger as well. Other new parts will consist of the oil pump, water pump, and oil pan.
The rotating mass is going to be balanced. The side housings will be resurfaced and ported. The rotor housings are going to be cnc ported(for an identical port).
AZRR is building a custom exhaust manifold. It is going to be a tubular manifold built from 321SS and the flanges are going to be 1/2" mild steel. It is going to be coated by Polydyn. Attached to it will be 44mm Tial wastegate(open dump). The turbo I am going with is a custom built Garrett T04s(60-1). The turbine housing is also going to be coated like the manifold.
The fuel system incorporates a Walbro 255lph pump, 720cc primaries in a stock rail, 1680cc secondaries in a custom built rail, and a SARD rising rate fpr.
I will be running an ACT unsprung 6 puck clutch with their high performance pressure plate, Corksport SS oil cooler lines and ss clutch line and cooling panel, Mazdaspeed motor and tranny mounts, Koyo radiator, Flexalite 150 electric fan(2800 cfm), custom fmic(24x12x3), 3" aluminum piping, GReddy tb elbow, and an Apexi twin chamber bov.
I am relocating the battery to the drivers side rear bin. I have chosen the Optime red top 24/37 for the battery. All of the accessories are going to be powered through a Painless Wiring curcuit isolator.
As far as the engine management goes I am using a Haltek E6K with the flying lead harness.
This is going to be a daily driven 400+ horsepower FC. I will update this thread as progress is made.

The new style!

Project Smokie Jr
Well its been 381 days (1 year 2 weeks and 2days) since my car was taking from me by some punks jealous of my car and no it wasnt in the greatest fashion but it was nice with some nice 17" rims on it that made it stand out and what they did was took 3 of the rims they snatched out a aftermarket tape deck without the face plate and broke my vents. Since then its been 1 year and 1 1/2 weeks since i drove it and in august of this year 06 i finaly started Project Smokie Jr. Its an 86 gxl non turbo with no power windows no power steering just a basic model that was giving to me by my youth pastor who was the only owner that keep it up in good shape. He didnt have time to work on it and knew that me and one of the minister in my church (who has 3 of them and builds them from the ground up and sells them) would love to have it as my project/street car. So now that the project is complete as far as the motor is concerned I want to shwo some before pics of what it looks like when i got it back with the old motor.

Various Projects
Cellphone Display
I've always wanted a real-time readout of all kinds of sensors. This project ended up going a bit further. Basically, a small cellphone LCD displays sensor outputs, like RPM, various temperatures, battery voltage, AFR, etc. as well as acting as a logging stopwatch for driving events (lap times), and being able to log sensor data as well. A serial port allows lap times and sensor data to be downloaded to a computer for analysis. This is a work in progress.

Electronic Aux and VDI Actuation
This project's goal was to open and close the VDI port, and possibly auxiliary intake ports in the future, without having an air pump of any kind, stock or aftermarket. The final system uses a solenoid along with some circuitry to detect engine RPM and give the solenoid enough kick to get the job done.

Vane AFM to Hot-Wire MAF
The S4 AFM has some major issues. One is the flapper limits orientation to horizontal, but even then, hard cornering can cause incorrect airflow readings. Another is the bulky size, and possible air restriction. This project replaces the S4 N/A vane AFM with a hot-wire MAF. This is a work in progress.

RX-7 Expirience
Building an RX-7. I bought my first RX when I was 17. Sold it at 20 and regret it ever since. Just bought my second one in Feb 06. It supposedly had 5k on a rebuild, but that must've been done by a feild rat. I had issues with the car since I bought it and suspected bad workmanship from the get go. I like to tinker and can handle replacing injectors and wiring pumps and gauges, but am no mechanic, So, a good friend of mine, and owner of Turblown Eng, is doing the work. I provide the money and beer to keep him happy! I've learned TONS already and decided to blog my progress.
