Thumbs up UPDATE: Low Impedance's Turbo Rotary Epic

Seeing i dont think there is a surviving thread about this history of what ive been through ill retype it here.

CLIFF NOTES: ^^^ This is how the car essentially was when i got it two years ago. I got it for 600 bucks from another member, with a engine, but basically everything on the engine was missing. (short block!) no interior etc. Around this time my first Rx7 i ever bought died on me (87 SE) so i had a parts car handy. I piece it back together of the course of 4 months, collecting parts and whatnot to get the car running.

Final product was a decent running car. I put 2000 miles on it that summer and had a time of 14.4 @ 99 mph (2.3 60'; missing third gear) at the local track. couldnt get traction for the life of me with my old *** tires i found in the back of shop. The car run rich as hell and i missed third alot. shifting was quite hard in this car.

The next winter the FD fuel pump i was using croaked. and so i thought this would be a good time to start fixing / upgrading. Well i take things alittle too far...

So i started doing bodywork. Found more bondo/body filler than i expect. As in it coated the entire car. Still working on this.

The stock turbo was dead, so ordered myself a cheapy T04B with a 1.15 a/r (college student budget dictates). And after alot of parts ordering i started to redo the engine, then i got bored and ran the wiring harness under the fender for the chassis and the engine harness and related under the dash. (there is nothing under the dash).

I decided to make i purpose built car (i drove it 2000 miles in year) so i stipped out anything that wasnt useful. I went so far as to remove unused wires from teh wiring harness and reloom it.

I had my friend who is a great welder help make my exhaust. (Horwatt Welding and Boosing)

3" with some SS and some low carbon steel. One piece with a flex. Yeah. ONE piece exhaust. im hardcore.

well i came across one serious problem. The FD manifold im using, and the turbo dont let the LIM fit. Damn. So i thought, hey the Fd LIM should work. Long story short. It doesnt.

SOOO....we are making an intake manifold. I got the 6061 material. 1.25" and 1.5" dia runners in 0.065 wall. 1/2" flange material. Runner length has been calculated and i have the lengths at home. I designed it for use with a Full Bridge for later use. (I think ahead). Going to be using the factory method of isolating the primary and secondary runners for driveablitly reasons and im sure power reasons can result. Ill have pics and progress of this as it goes.

As of late i finished the chassis wiring and i have ACC power to everything.

I also started bending tubes for the charge pipes. Getting the engine cleaned up, blah blah blah blah. The car is going to be flat black until i finish some more important things, like make it run. I got a deal on a set of Fd stockers, and waiting for the front spacers, which should be here tm....

also, ill have picutres this weekend as ive made some good progress since these where taken.

and now onto the...

PICTURES!

Nice work, I like the intercooler pipe routing idea...never seen a setup like that before. Well the old school HKS/Greddy/Trust setups did that, but on the other side...schweet.

I've also never seen (on a 7) the coils mounted in the cabin....very interesting. I for one though like the idea of having as little holes in the firewall as possible, but that will add to a very clean looking engine bay when complete - props on creativity there...

No offence meant to your friend, but although he's got the DP "welded", as in its held together well no doubt, his welds are anything but pretty....and from the appearance of the spatter on the DP, it looks as though he was using a flux-core wire on it....for a shop that does welding, that seems like an odd choice unless they only have one machine or something.

But neat car man, good luck on the custom manifold setup.

Horwatt Welding and Boosing is an inside joke and im probably spelling "boosing" wrong. (think alcohol). He did it with a mig using Flux-Core at my place. We TIG'ed the V-band flange to the turbo. I DP is getting wrapped so no one is going to seeing them anyway. He offered to TIG the WHOLE thing but i was fine with Flux-Core welds. the charge pipes on the other hand are TIGed. Ill have pictures of that this weekend

new.

NOTE: i did say "cheapy" but the quality upon me poking around looking at it was actually impressive. Even a relative who does castings for a living was pretty impressed. Making 12,000 a year and paying 10,000 in tution gives you the above turbocharger. ill see how it works. Hell if it last a season or two, ill be happy.

Looks like a "tuning pros" FD turbo manifold. Is it? That is what I put on mine but it fits great in my application. I have to say making an intake is great but why not just make an adapter plate to push the turbo away from the intake a little?

Very cool. I also ran the chasis harness through the fender and the engine harness through the dash but I left the coils in the stock location and drilled small holes to run the wires through the fender for those as well. I drilled small holes for the trans wiring right in the hump so that the exposed wires under the car are only about three inches long. I also rerouted the speedo cable so that it can not be seen under the hood either.

lol. i started to undo alot (ALOT) of bondo misuse and in the meantime, once complete, i put a primer over it. 1) so the car is one color so the landowner doesnt bitch and 2) looks better not 46 different colors.

Short Answer: im painting it next year.

in the meantime i need to fix that damn brake fluid leak that is eating paint in the engine bay.

man i would not feel safe with that mechanical fuel pressure gauge there. get an electric one and put it inside the cabin

how so? its mounted outside of the cabin and is basically considered to be in the best location possible. its a stainless cable running to it. im more concerned with rubber fuel lines in the engine bay. I am going to be welded closed any unused holes in the firewall though.

so is it unavoidable that you have to get rid of the fan in order to fit the turbo in? i just bought a rx7 and i have been stick on repaiing alot of the little things like windows and lights before i can move undr the hood. lucky for the engine is like new.

its not unavoidable but i am using an electric fan for several reasons and the intercooler and the inlet and outlet at both sides so how im running is the best choice.
