DloveN, if you have a 12A you are an official Old Guy, we'd love to see you and especially one of the GS's if you can get it over here. Donny and Stu are in their late teens, early 20's or so, but their 12As have made them wise well beyond their years.

Stu, you and I have to sit down with an interstate map. Meeting in Jefferson should take at least an hour off the drive down from N.C. and S.C. and make it easier for you "Northerners" to get down here. TG, time to start working on the boss.

Michael, if you can't bring the kids with you, we can get you out of here by 3:00 pm and if it helps we can get started a little earlier, at 11:00 am with an early picnic lunch at noon and plenty of time to look over the cars, talk rotaries and swap parts (bring a 2G coil, we can hook up a 2GDFI for you in about twenty minutes).

Donny, that's right, we are about 15 minutes your side of Athens, just come straight down Rt. 11. You might want to bring a leash for your dog but you can let the GF roam free. Are you sure you can't get that pretty SA of yours down here?

Being December 8, it might be a bit on the chilly side, but with a little luck on the temps, some sunshine and a bon fire, we should be fine. Just think how jealous all our northern rotor head brothers will be reading about a first gen get together when they've got their's mothballed for the winter.

We might want to organize a parts swap while we are at it, anybody need anything or got anything to get rid of?

yeah ray 11am is fine and if i can bring anything(food related) let me know. as for coils, the only spares i have is 1g. i've been meaning to do the original dfi with 1g components for quite awhile but it being a dd it's kinda hard to actually make time to work on it except for needed repairs to keep it on the road. i hate working out in the yard during the heat of summer and the cold of winter. i've thought about checking with my employer about using the building where i work but haven't yet. i'm sure he wouldn't mind. jeezus, a caravan down with u guys would be great. just let me know when the time comes where and when to meet up.

I'll make another offer. If anyone needs anything from Pull-a-part, let me know. I'll be headed in soon to grab some ignitors, S3 dizzys, good engine cores, and fasteners for the RX-2. If y'all want to check Atlanta-north yard at pullapart.com and tell me what you're looking for, I'll bring the spoils to the meet.

Now we are talking, if we get a half decent day we can roll up our sleeves and get greasy (I'm serious).

We will plan to get rolling at 11:00 am, although anytime is fine, with picnic lunch and barbecue around 1:00, any contributions can go on the grill or add to the drinks, side dishes, etc. We can coordinate food during the first week of December.

If you are willing to go with the 2G set up Michael we can install it in the drive. I like it better, looks cleaner, fits with virtually no alterations under the hood and works great - you will have to turn your idle down after it's in. I have a spare that I am planning to put in my silver GSL if you want to give it a try or bring your own, they are plentiful in the 2nd gen parts section of the forum (or ask Crit to pick one up at Pull-A-Part?). Mike, Greg and I all 2GDFI installation in various configurations so you can see ahead of time what it involves and how it looks.

Crit it would be great if you can come out, any chance of it being in the RX-2?

Anybody need a hood or a couple of doors? The hood is in great shape, from a recently painted brown metallic 85 GSL. The doors are fair, although I have removed most of the hardware (that's available too if you need it, we'll just have to do some digging). Hood and doors are free, we'll have to assess the hardware but if I already have spares of these I won't need them.

not putting down on u guy's work or abilities but i'd hate to chance/test an ignition mod on a 2hr return trip. plus that looooooong thread about the setup and the TT, looks like a whole lot of work/headache to me to get it to work without overheating. but i've read about and am curious to hear the difference this mod makes to the exhaust note. but we'll see, it's something to think about between now and then, and crit, if u happen to run across some 2g coils i'll make sure to bring some extra cash. the interior in mine is brown so i could use some replacement plastic piece for the inside release, mine r too brittle to bother with. could probably use other things if i put my mind to it but the car was one of those "just get going so u can drive it" kinda things once i realized i'd probably never own another 3.

If I get the thing running by then I'll be there. It sure would be nice to meet some real rotary guys, there aren't really around my area except for a few guys with fc's and fd's.

Ray, I could use that hood actually, my poor old red gs needs a good bit of body work.

Hey Crit, if you do happen to find any 2G ignitor boxes, let me know how much they are. If they arn't too expensive I can reimburse you if you don't mind. I'll also bring my 1GDFIS down for kicks. I am starting to like the way this meet is going!

Michael, the amazing thing about the 2GDFI installation is that:

1. It is incredibly easy, despite the endless and confusing posts on the subject. It is just a couple jumper wires and some mounting bolts - there are even predrilled holes on the strut brace you can use.
2. It is completely reversible in a matter of minutes, could be done on the side of the road in case anything did go wrong.
3. It's completely reliable, there really isn't anything that can go wrong.

A few weekends ago Greg was out here and we put one in his car, he had all the same concerns. But once he realized he could go back to stock if necessary, we went ahead. It fired right up and worked perfectly, only thing not quite right was that we only put one mounting bolt in. He was supposed to put the other one in when he got home but he's still driving it around on one bolt.

The 2G coil packs generally go for $20-$25 on the 2G forum parts section or on ebay, I had no trouble getting the three that Greg and I needed.

DloveN, if you can get here and can get that hood back home it's yours.

so ray, if this setup is soooo easy, what's the reason for that loooooog thread that's like 30+ pages about building the little box(TT) to make the 2g coils work with the 1g ignitors, and the overheating issues. unless ur actually talking about using a pre-assemled setup that all is needed is hooking up a few wires. as for mounting the coils, i had wanted to try using individual coils so one each could be mounted on each rotor housing using the old "rats nest" mounting holes.

The TT is used to lower the ohms of power into the 2GDFIS to prevent it from burning up prematurely.

so is it the 2g coils or the 1g ignitor that's burning up? i was actually waiting til all the trial and errors and all the bugs were worked out before trying this upgrade.

Michael, like you, I read posts on this until my head was spinning and even lost some sleep about whether I should do it or not.

But one Saturday night, at about 10:30 and after a few beers, under a drop light and without all those instructions, I went out and installed my 2GDFI in less than an hour. The car fired right up and the smooth idle improvement was immediate - the only thing I had to do was adjust the idle down, which I set at 400 rpm just because I could.

My installation uses an intact 2G leading coil pack, I simply by passed the 2G ignitor, which is still in the ignitor housing. I'm using one of the remaining stock coils to power the trailing ignitors, which are wired through the leading wires on the distributor cap. The other stock coil, which used to power the leading wires, is still there and could be easily reconnected if necessary.

This makes a clean and easily reversible installation, without cutting any of the stock wiring or altering the 2G coil pack. Here's a picture of the completed installation before I moved the trailing plug wires to the leading distributor cap positions:

And here's a picture after moving the trailing wires to the leading connections:

Greg went one step further, because he didn't have room for the intact coil pack. He mounted just the 2G coil pack, without the ignitor casing or the resistor inside. I'll see if I can get him to take a picture and post it - his 2G coil was mounted on just one bolt, last time I saw it.

Some people say you need the resistor in the 2G ignitor casing, that's why I used hooked it up. But they are wrong and this is needless worry. Without the resistor the ignition systems works beautifully and nothing burns up - that's just urban myth. Just hook the (+) to (+) and the (-) to (-), you are done, couldn't be simpler.

You'd think I was selling these things, but really this is such a no brainer I want to be sure people know about it - I put it off for years and could have saved lot's of gas if I'd gotten around to it earlier.

Ray

when moving the trailing to the leading position of the dist cap, the dist needs to be retarded to bring the trailing timing back to the correct position, right? oh wait, it's still using the trailing ignitor so the timing didn't change. so why would cap position matter? as for room to mount stuff, there's plenty. i've even had ppl comment on how much room is under there. and i must say, wish my engine bay looked that clean. also going by ur dist position, urs is quite abit more retarded compaired to where mine is. bolt position on mine is like half way in the slot.

i had a FC coil on my FB for a long time. easy as cake to install. the hardest part is deciding where to mount it. all you have to do is switch the spark plug wires and coil wires. it can easily be reversed. AWSOME mod. instant gain in drivability, power throughout the power band, and MPG.

DONT adjust the timing AT ALL. you switch the wires on the cap due to the fact that there is less resistance through the leading connections. you can run it through the trailing but its pointless to do so. all youre doing is hindering yourself. the cap is designed to let a stronger spark through the leading connections.

after running the set up for about a year my leading ignitors did burn out, but i cant say if that was due to the second gen coil or age. either way its a cheap easy fix. the mod definately pays for itself in satisfaction and better MPG.

Yeah James, I know, you took it. Don't worry about the timing Mike, it works out. All the wires fire at the same time as far as I can tell, so it doesn't matter how you hook things up. Nice thing about a rotary.

Did I ever show you this video?:

Here it is with the trailing hooked up:

Great thread guys, I look forward to joining you one day. I just need a "7". Have plans to start one in another year or so.

Greg I have talked with you before I live across the street from Andy J., he sent me an email about this tread.
I remember the first time I saw your car, we were all gathered at my house for my Birthday- I walk to the front of the house and can’t believe my eyes, there is a great looking 7 sitting out front parked on the street. "My wife has gotten me a 1st gen. for my birthday, excellent"....I meet Greg moments later.

I will be keeping an envious eye on you guys, have fun.
