First and for most. THANK YOU CRIT!!!! You were a big help to me on Friday. She wouldn't start on Sunday for some reason so I had my brother pull start her. Since then I have been letting her sit for a second before turning her off and I have not had much trouble with starting her since, still not a turn the key once or twice thing yet, but she is much better.

Second. I'm sorry that I missed the meet on Sunday. I had to finish up some work that didn't get done on Saturday night, and I told the guy that the cabling would be done by Sunday.

As for the car. I have to get the rear end fix (it is a seal) before it breaks from lack of oil. I also have to get a fan, either electric or a new clutch to stop the over heating issue when sitting at idle. And I need to get the exaust fixed as well. I think that the last place i lived the scraping over the speed bump has cracked it or broken the weld.

Other than that I just wanted to stop by and say hello, and It is good to see that you all had a great time at Ray's and I'm sorry that I couldn't make it.

i've never had a car that i had to work on all the time, my 7 included. but then again, i don't really have to have the PERFECT street ride. some of us don't make that kinda money. and any repairs that's needed have to wait til i can afford to do them. as for what to do with ur time? simple, u've finally got all the bugs worked out and u can just enjoy driving it.

I know this sounds counterintuitive, but the key to not having to work on your RX-7 all the time is drive your RX-7 all the time.

I bought my white GSL a few years ago ($1,545), put a little initial work into it and then put it to work on the 110 mile daily commute. That was 50,000 miles ago, almost all trouble free and no breakdowns. Of course I have some fun with some "upgrades" once in a while, but those are optional fun, not miserable maintenance.

I have similar stories for my two previous 7s and I'm sure the Silver One will be even better.

The 1st gen is the ultimate in reliable, inexpensive transportation, once you get to know them. Of course you need to get to know them.

So when we Old Guys going to the mountains?

Might work, we'll see how it develops. There seems to be a lot of dissent in the ranks among those young guys.

Ray, I know your always interested in MPG figures for our cars. I was finally able to sit down and tally the results for our little foray down to your house from here.

The car is my 80 SA. Its a stock port 12a with 2GDFIS, Dellorto DHLA 48 carb, RE header and exhaust system, no rats nest, no smog equipment, and vacuum advanced hooked up to manifold vacuum.

The trip was 457 miles and I used 20.76 gallons of gas. The highway speed was around 80 mph for most of the ride with some spirited runs thrown in at the end (thanks Stu). The mileage is 22 mpg. Not bad for a performance carb. no emissions and cruising around 80 mph for most of the trip. Around town I usually see 15 to 17 mpg depending on how I drive.

Oh I don't think I told you yet. Those half bridge/half street plates I have here.. I am going to build an engine with them. I was tryin to sell them but it seems better if I just use them. Currently looking for a good running engine for cheap to swap the parts on That is where my OER is going.

Edit: Anyone have a running 12a or -SE 13b for cheap?

You must drive like me Tim, no fast starts and stops, lots of semi drafting and, from time to time, trying to keep up with Stu. I get around 23 too, mostly out on the interstate. Most new cars don't get that. Who says rotaries don't get good gas mileage??

Does porting your engine increase or decrease your gas mileage, all other things being equal?

I just returned from a weekend in California, didn't see any 7s out there. We must have the largest remaining cluster of 1st gens left in the country.

Not really, Ray. I pretty much get on it all the time. I run an 82 flywheel (7 lbs. lighter than an SA flywheel) and 7K rpm comes up pretty quick and pretty often. I don't have any carbon buildup issues in my car.

I would think overall porting may decrease the mileage since your now able to burn more faster because of larger ports. It really depends on the port ( how agressive ) and the driver ( how aggressive )

I'm thinking a mild street port, the guy at Atkins Rotary that I was talking to about this a few years ago said this would improve efficiency and gas mileage, all things (like aggression) being equal. Always looking for that extra mile or two, a little more kick would be a bonus.

Time to mark your calendars: Next OGTA meeting is Tuesday, January 8, 2008 at Jeffrey's in Suwanee. 7:00 pm, of course.

Ray

had i known that i was the only one at ray's with a lighter than stock flywheel, i'd let u seen just how quick they'll rev. don't really know the brand that i have, i got it from a friend. it has the counter weight as part of the flywheel. this other guy i know has the light weight steel one from RB with counter weight bolted to it and holding it and the one i have, mine is slightly lighter. i could tell a major difference between it and the stock '74 flywheel.

Sorry I missed the meet. Looks like a good time.
I was dove hunting so I still got to enjoy the beautiful day.

I have a RB Dellorto, Street-Port exhaust and light-weight steel flywheel.
On the freeway I get 21 or 22 mpg.
But in town it's like 11 or 12 and I could be driving a lot more spirited.

As long as we are all comparing milage:

I have a Niki with an RB header and the 2GDFI. I commute in heavy traffic everyday and consitently get in the high 16s (16.8 - 17.3) in the summer (AC is being used) and around 18 in the winter (17.9 - 18.5). Crusing on the interstate I have gotten over 20.

The two factors I see making the biggest impact is ambient air temperature. The higher the temp the lower the mpg. And, the traffic. When the rotary can cruise it does quite well. Ray can attest to that. He does a long commute early in the morning and is consistently over 20 mpg.

I had no idea we had so many guys from Larryville. There's no reason not to be packing the meets. Hell, I found a guy with 2 GSL-SEs in Duluth and another carbed FB guy in Buford. Very cool.

That's why we call Larryville "Old Guys Territory", probably the greatest concentration of 1st generation RX-7s remaining in the US.

Greg, I hope you and that hot rod of yours can join us on January 8!

About gas mileage, here are my secrets for 23-24 mpg:

1. bonez race pipe replaces cats
2. 2GDFI
3. Keep your rat's nest and make sure it works!

Ray, do happen to remember...about two years ago...a silver FC GXL cruising down I-85 North headed back to our exit? Followed you onto Buss. 129?

'cuz I was just remembering last night...that HAD to be you in your White-ish FB...I do believe you waved...hehe...then you turned onto 335 to go back to your house.

I remember racing a white FC home one evening, a fellow about 35 years old with what looked to be his mom in the passenger's seat. She seemed to be having a good time. But I don't recall a silver one.

Also I might have been driving my brown or light beige GSL back then. And everybody waves at everybody here in Jefferson, so I'm not sure that was a clue. But yeah if I saw you I probably noticed and said hello, you don't notice many 7s on the road these days.

I got the OER back on, maybe I will swing down there one day again and show it.

It is super loud/awesome. Horrible gas mileage and does not like to be used under 2500rpm (stalled once lol) but geez, get around 5 and that thing pins you back!
