Ah yes.. mind is working again. Comments on cooling system flushing procedure and what to recharge with? Prestone 50/50? Water wetter? And I have a 160 degree tstat new. I think the one in there is a 195 summer. Now that I'm in the south do I want to do the 160?? It seems to make sense.

im going to take out the radiator and try to have dipped stripped whatever they do and hope they can save the top externals. I've seen them come back and they strip the numbers off. I'd like to keep them but maybe not possible. At this point is it advisable to replace any sensors?

carlos advised a 5 degree timing advance because of my headers and free flow exhaust. Comments?

This diagram seems to spell it all out for access easily to the fuel rail, injectors etc. I don't have to unbolt anything up top(?) Just unbolt down below where it ties into the intake manifold. Nothing above is affected. (?)

 

And!! Doesn't it make sense that ALL the fuel lines should be replaced? Including those from fuel tank to pump, check valve, filter, etc?

 

While I'm at it what's the opinion on OMP lines? Should I be considering replacing those.? OMP rebuild too? Delete and mix? (Not thinking so)

 

So many things...

First off, I'm not a shill for mazdatrix, they just have a website that I think is clear. Feel free to buy from whomever you prefer to support with your rotary monies.

For SE injectors, I've never had a problem with the stockers, so long as they're flowed. If you send to WitchHunter Performance - Injector Cleaning & Flow Testing Services, they'll sort them out on the cheap. If you don't end up with a pair that flows similarly (which is a HUGE deal on the SE with just two injectors) he'll match them with others and deliver a nice pair. Add fuel rail o-rings and engine block grommets, and you're good to go there. Consider pulling the air bleeds out of your intake runners too - they sit under your injector pintle and are a little diffuser basket, the size of a thimble. If they're broken, they're $50 to replace. Hopefully yours are fine, but you'd hate to go to reassemble and fine one broken with a week to ship....

Injector o-rings and grommets - mandatory. Air bleeds optional, depending on what you find. Fuel Injection Parts

Whether you service your pulsation damper, defeat the one on the rail and service only the fuel pump - that's really up to you. Personally I have no problem with either approach. A replaced damper will outlive Robert and Ray. Pulsation Dampers

Fuel lines are the ones you want to get un-lined - just pressure-rated rubber is fine. Fuel line with a blue plastic liner will absolutely not work on the flared steel lines we have. 3/8 supply, 5/16 return. And the silicone vacuum lines are super cheap - you can buy a fistful and replace the rats' nest 2" at a time. Super easy. Silicone Vacuum Hose

You shouldn't need any intake gaskets if you're careful to tap the manifolds as they come off. Remember to try to slide them to the side and tap them with a rubber mallet. If you lift straight up, they might stick to both mating parts and tear. Slide them across the face of the gasket, and it'll stick to one manifold or another. It's not my clearest advice ever, but I hope you get the picture. They should be easy to reuse. The intake manifolds and plenum really are super easy.

The final part we didn't talk about is the fuel pump under the car. It has a pulsation damper back there, as well as a fuel filter AND an inlet screen that's a little cone, like if you cut the tip off an icee cone thing to let the juice drip out. It's worth a look and to replace the fuel hose, but if you want to limit your scope and just focus on the technical stuff under the hood, then come back to the fuel pump some other weekend, I could see that.

I've never had OMP lines break. They seem to fail when you monkey with them. If you leave the lower manifold on the block and don't mess with them, they'll be fine. Besides, they get expensive.

Paul, if you get the part numbers for the hoses, injector seals, gaskets, etc, you can likely order them through your local dealer and save a few bucks. I did the entire fuel system on my car about a year ago and got almost everything through the dealer, their prices were competitive and I didn't have to worry about cheap Chinese or non-OEM stuff going on my car.

On the fuel hose, if you get it from the parts sure, make sure you get the hose rated for fuel injected cars. There are different types and some do not have the high pressure rating for FI systems. You can use the parts store vacuum line, no need to get that stuff from the dealer. If you want to get fancy, you could get silicone line. Most hoses are 4mm I believe. I get mine from here: Silicone Boost/Vacuum Hose

I think the 50-50 coolant mix would be just fine. I use the cheap Walmart branded coolant personally.

For your 5th/6th ports, you're probably better off leaving them alone if they are working properly. You can put a zip tie on the base of the actuator rods, then take the car for a spin. If the zip ties have moved after your drive, you have verified that the ports are opening. You have to take off the lower intake manifold to remove the sleeves. I don't think you'd have to remove the lower manifold for anything else though.

 

I'll disagree with you there, Brett. For any other car, coolant doesn't matter to me. After years of blowing coolant seals, Mazda finally figured out a coolant that doesn't decompose silicone seals and specified it on the later RX-8s. I imagine (more research needed here) that it would be a good idea to the earlier cars as well. Mazda FL-22 is magic. As long as you can keep some in the car (looking at you, FB storage bins) you should have enough to top off with a leak and never have to get the old crud back in your cooling system again.

I'm not convinced it's required, but a few gallons of coolant is a small price to pay vs a forced, unplanned rebuild.

 

All of this info is important for me to make the right choices. I studied the manual late last night and came to the conclusion that I need to prioritize my moves. I can't afford to do all this at once. But, all of it has to be done. Im going to concentrate on the cooling system first. Besides, I know I can handle that much myself. As for fuel and vac hoses I'm not so sure I want to tackle that without a veteran in the room. But, I will be purchasing what I need shortly as I go along. I'm hoping to get my bud from Ohio here soon. He did, with a little help from me, all the minor restoration on it winter 14-15, now 9000 miles ago.

Looking for for a definitive answer though Crit alluded to one. Is it not a good idea to purchase New injectors? Better to remove send out for rebuild/flow?

On the coolant I think the Best is worth it. What's the proper way to flush this system?

 

I agree with Crit there. Fl-22 isn't *THAT* expensive and it's peace of mind. I've actually been using zerex Asian for a year now, but I don't feel good about it. My next flush before I move will be the Mazda stuff. I used to use plain Jane green, but then switched to FL-22 for a few years.. Then turbo swap happened and I cheaped out and used zerex Asian. Shame on me.

In more exciting news.. Once I get my 720's serviced and obtain a racing beat downpipe, my hybrid turbo can finally go in.

Edit: To elaborate a bit, I used to live in Georgia with the rest of these rotards, but moved to Vermont with my family. I haven't exactly been active in this thread since I left, but I pop in once in a while.

I've never owned a first gen, but respect them for what they are - the original RX-7. I've always been an FC man, the draw to them being a larger and more comfortable interior, more refined road manners and the extra horsepower out of the box. I'm sure I'll own a five letter some day, though!

I've really wanted to add a beautiful stock black TII to my "collection " of one. There's one in Minneapolis CL right now that id love to look closer at but it's not in the economic cards. I drove a couple FC in the late 80's. I liked em!! Very different than my SE. Maybe someday.
