The KB was basically DOA when I went down on Friday. I think the reason it was a bit slow that last session when we were at VIR is the compression and probably not the race gas. Anyway when I first started driving it it just felt like it had lost 100 hp and then because I switched to the Pineapple racing oil pan I was filling the catch can in like a lap and it was throwing oil all over the engine bay, the windshield, etc.....after a couple of sessions the engine just died. For the road race guys if you get the pineapple pan you'll need to do what Damian does (I'll let him explain) or run the dump tube from the catch can back into the filler neck cause that thing will fill in a hurry.
I guess the sale price just went down a bit LOL.
Gene's old car did fine and is actually a pretty fast car on the P-zeros at 9 or 10lbs of boost so I'm sure with more boost and tires it will be a beast. The brakes are a little touchy. It has AP fronts with 99 rears so I think a bigger master is definitely needed.
I'll see if I can find a fast lap but it was pretty crowded. During the vid, the RX8, the GT3 and I had finally broken away from the pack. I was pissed that the 8 came in to the pit because I may have been able to play with him but the GT3 was faster. I'm not sure what class those rx8s run in but you can tell those babies can get around the track.
Good vid Fritz. Suspenion on the silver car seems too hard (non compliant) when hitting curbs in the upper esses section. Meanwhile, I too was surprised at the performance of the RX8. At my last event at VIR there was a Mazda team running them and they said it could do 2:13s (gutted stock, slicks, and suspension). Meanwhile, the GRAND Course looked good. I'm looking forward to the Mazdadrivers event in June. I know you won't be able to make it but there will be other events...

The springs are much softer but there's a big difference in dampening between the GAB super Rs and the advanced Design shocks on the KB. Even better are the JRZs. If I ever install those puppies I'll be flying through those Esses hehe
This RX8 was far from basic. Fuel cell etc....for all I know the damn thing had a three rotor in it. Check out the torque coming out of those sm autox style esses up into the north course. That thing was BADASS.
Have fun in June. It's easily the most fun track I've been on. Of course I love that little autox stuff and get bored on the straights so I guess it all depends on what makes you tick. Me, I'll take corners, corners and more corners
You'll have to remind me again what you said about the KB.

ahh yes, the good old double oil pan vent mod :-)
ok, first let me clarify 2 things on this
1) First and most important, is the double vent idea was Crispy's, not mine, i just copied him :-)
2) Second, let me correct you a bit on it Fritz, the seconds line is not for letting the oil building up to flow back to into the filler neck, actually its another vent line, and that is the reason the oil catch can dosnt fill up. This is how it works, the typical vent is from the filler neck to the catch can, but this really only vents well when the oil is being forced to the side opposite of the filler neck, if the oil is forced to the filler neck side (ie hard right turn) then it sloshes up the neck and pressure pushes it into the can, thus a quickly filled oil catch can that dumps all over your car (no good...mine would fillup and start to dump oil in just one 20min session). However crispy came up with a great idea of adding a second vent to the other side of the oil pan via the stock turbo oil return line hole that is typicaly covered when moving to a single turbo system. Simply make a plate with a nipple on it and route another line from the catch can to it and now you have effectivly vented both sides of the oil pan, allowing it to vent properly on hard right turns....so now my oil catch can does not fill up ever really, I can go an entire track day and maybe get it 3/4 full...no more oil slick on the side of the car.

BTW regarding the RX8's they are VERY fast. The Speedsource RX8's use Motec engine management, have chassis' 200% stiffer than stock, and they did over 800 engine dyno pulls to yield some incredible numbers for the normally aspirated RENISIS engine.

I have no idea exactly what type of rx8 it was but it was quick even for a race car. The owner and Driver is Danny Alvis (sp?) he sometimes drives one of those V8 m3 race cars. His best time on the full course is around a 1:58.
The next time I see him and the RX8 I'll have to get some info on it.
When I get a chance I'll look for a fast lap. Do you have any idea what's considered a decent lap on that grand course?

Gene's car actually has both nipples blocked on the oil fill neck with a modernized baster type thing under the cap, the line coming out of the top of the cap and going to the catch can. However the drain tube at the bottom of the catch cat is just fed back into the bottom of the filler neck.
Using the second oil return port is the best option though no doubt

Clue in Bret to look for anything unique or unusual would you please.

I probably won't keep it and most likely I'll just part it because it's difficult to sell it for what it's worth.
If anyone wants some nice track parts; brake, susp, sway bars, etc..... let me know hehe

GRAND fast lap
About the only clean lap was a 3:07
The driver of the NSX is Brian Sullivan and he's got some mad skills. It's mostly stock with track tires
Vid is titled: BMW VIR GRAND 3-06 fast lap 3.07

Met some guys at the NASA-SE event at Road Atlanta this past weekend. Both frequent VIR and I hope to make it up there later this year as well. Over the weekend, the car ran great, ambient temps were in the low 60's so water temps never got over 85c. I never even hit WOT, toed it in to about 6/8's throttle and still hit 150 on the back straight. Hopefully a few of the RX-8's who I passed on the straights will post the vids. I need to get a camera mount installed for the next. Since the last track day was over 8 years ago, the track bug has bitten me as well.
