Fritz,

Thanks for catching that interesting moment on tape.

That mis-matched set of tires caused me worry all weekend. The rears were quite a bit older than the fresh fronts and I was constantly reminded. (no, it wasn't bad planing. on the day before leaving I discovered a cracked wheel and had to bring an my old set for use in the rear)

Subsequent to that incident I worked with the pressures and was able to bring it under control and during the Mazda event I was able to do some of my best sessions in quite a while. That Grand East course is a blast.

Your coupler held all weekend and it was much appreciated. Sadly, I saw you leaving as I was making the long lonely walk back from Hogpen when my student decided to try and win the event on the last turn of the last session of the event. He touched the guardrail and I have a new great story to tell to everyone.

Anyway, I didn't get you the funds for the coupler. Please PM me your mailing address and I will send it along.

4 days on track: Exhausting, but aren't all good things exhausting if done to excess.

Hey Bill,
I did 5 straight days last summer (just over 700 miles) in 100 degree heat so I feel your pain . I imagine it's comparable to shock therapy hehe.

The grand course is my favorite track for sure. I get bored on the back straight and I never met a corner I didn't like so the grand is truly GRAND but don't ever take away that front straight it's perfect because you have to really nail 17 and then the braking is on a slight incline into a deep corner that really pays off if you do it correctly. Sounds like your student literally nailed 17 I hope his car wasn't damaged too badly and I'm glad you're ok Now spill the beans already.

When's your next event? I'll collect the next time I see you or I'll take the coupler, the clamp and a few pipes for good measure

The last set I had were heat cycled, slightly used and aged for a year or two and I got about 4 good days, 1 decent and finally a day of drifting from them.

Times weren't too fantastic because it was a bit warm but lots of 2:09s and 10s. On a good day this car has a 2:08 in it no problem

Bill Gammon was there in his FD and I have some footage of him laying down some nice rubber around t4. That video is up and it's titled BMW VIR F 6-06 Bill cleaning his tires...hehe. Bill was having lots of coupler issues and lucky for him I had an extra http://fritz.sysadmin-racing.com/

BTW I left my helmet at the track so if by some remote chance anyone see's this post who is already there, going to or knows someone who they can contact at VIR PLEASE please look for my white Bell m4 helmet with SCCA sticker, BMW sticker and emergency tab on the back. The emergency tab of course has my E contact in it Helmet was last seen around Matt Einsteins trailer. He drives a yellow GT3 that's slow as hell

A fellow enthusiast let me take his Lotus Exige out for some laps as payment for some brake work and let just say that was pretty fun. Sounds like an s2000 and drives like a spec miata. Could manage 120 down the straights w/ easy braking at the 3. IOW with seat time these cars could be pretty damn fast. I'm guessing 2:17 or 18s.

I had the usual issues and some new ones. Leaking oil cooler, leaking tire, and broken rear sway bar mount/link. Mount broke on the drivers side and caused the car to push a bit. Seriously slowed me down a couple of seconds a lap so rear sways are very important hehe.

Next on the schedule is Chin in couple of weeks. Hopefully the oiler cooler will be an easy fix.

I hope the Mazda guys and girls are staying cool and having fun this weekend
That vid reminds me of the 2nd weekend i had my car and Bill drove it on track with me riding shotgun. :o

The Chinmotorsports event over the 4th was a real treat but it was difficult beating the heat IAPAIDKI It was probably 97 degrees both days and trying to stay hydrated between the generous track time and the normal extra curricular mechanic work was impossible.

Pat AKA Patfat was there in his FD which we sort of built together and I'm proud to say it ran very well and he was blistering the full course. I think he ran some 2:15s or 16s which is very fast given the track conditions.

I had the honor of instructing a talented student in an FC who's also a buddy (Deak) that was gracious enough to allow me to drive his car when mine became inoperable due to a steering rack leak. My steering started feeling rather stiff when turning left and I thought I had broken a sway link again or something but it was actually just the steering rack loosing fluid because the oil cooler line rubbed a hole in one of the steering lines. As you guys know those lines unlike the AC lines are actually pretty sturdy so really be careful that your SS oil cooler lines are well tied back and insulated if near anything at all. I swear the ******* would cut your car in half if given 1/2 a chance.

BTW FCs are incredible handling cars and I'm envious of all those fortunate enough to race and or track them. I bet you're having great time

My car was running well with no mechanical issue but the tires were beat and well the heat has already been mentioned so the times were dog slow. I'll check the vids and put something up for my own video log.

The new Hoosiers only lasted for 3 good days but it was a glorious 3 days I actually corded 3 of the 4 so it was probably in my best interest that the steering line issue came up because I didn't notice the cording until I dimounted the wheels and cleaned the infield pebbles off the tires. Yet another lesson in safety. Always check your tires for damage you never know.

I think I'm taking a couple of months off and waiting for cooler weather...YEAH RIGHT

Yeah I got that stupid thing figured out. I spent a good 72 hours trying to figure things out. I slept maybe 4 hours and had to make a trip down to c-ville to visit Fritz, but it was well worth it. We all had a blast this weekend! Like Fritz said it was f'n HOT. I was drinking maybe 2 bottles of water an hour and didn't pee but maybe once all day.

I'll have to post the video of a GT3 and Fritz passing me in turn 2 then Fritz passing the GT3 in turn 4. It's pretty bad ***! I kept up for maybe two laps, but I had to back off due to my temps and I'm not that great of a driver. I was flying around that track trying to keep up w/ the big boys. I was doing 115-120 up the esses while they were probably doing 125-130.

Anyhoo I'm signed up for the 3 day event Aug 4,5,6 if anyone else would like to join.

Fritz, you should try and make this event. Ram and I are going to rent a garage this time and he is going to bring the Elise. I would rather wrench on a nice grage floor than in the nasty VIR paddock.

Pete we better see you there

Glad to hear it worked out!

Unless something changes, i'm tentatively planning on hitting the Aug. 4 Seat Time IF a few things come through. I like those, because they take no pre-planning or committment. .. we'll see.

Thanks Fritz! Yeah the car has come together pretty well. That little RX6 turbo at 12psi is a little nasty **** and it's running pig rich. Plus, a FD with all new bushings, suspension, and Hoosiers is fast! I can't wait until it cools off a bit I might run that sucka at 14-15psi.

Anytime Pete

Deke has the video camera but I'll get it soon and post that vid

Did the manifold bolts hold up ok?

I'd say you have an easy 325 at the wheels right know. Hell if it's not breaking up/sputtering and you can get about 10 mpg around town I'd leave the tuning alone. Once the weather gets colder that will lean that baby out plenty.

Last weekend I was fortified with a full plate of NASA and enjoyed every portion

I love the 10 ring circus atmosphere this organization puts on. Very entertaining and I highly recommend there drivers education or race programs.

We were driving on the North Course at VIR and I have some vids of me and a buddy in his NSX going one on one He wasn't fooling around either you'll see him taking short cuts through the grass etc... trying to escape the relentless pursuit of the FD on that sexy *** of his NSX hehe.

I was a few seconds slower this time out because I was driving on stock size wheels and tires with stock brakes on atleast 3 year old A32s that held up very well. I think aged tires are better than heat cycled tires lol

1st vid is titled: NASA VIR N 7-06 NSX
Vid link: http://fritz.sysadmin-racing.com/

I'll upload another vid with a fast lap I was able to run during the time trialers group which allowed for the one and only clean lap of the weekend. Ran a 1.44 and I feel very good about it because it was about 90 out so that combined with the tire and brake setup is not too shabby and probably would of been good for 1st or 2nd had I forked over the cash for the time trial.

Pete you still considering this Friday at Summit?

Yes, though you'll be completely unsurprised to hear that i'm not totally sure yet. :-)

I should know better by tommorow night.... depends on whether I can bail out of work, and if it's gonna be 100 nut-roasting degrees out.

I'll be on streets too... couldn't locate track tires in time :-(
