So something weird happened to my rx7 while leaving the cars&coffee meet.

I noticed it started idling poorly and it would even die on me (3 times).
I try to rev it up, it would rev slowly.
It had no power.
It sounded like it was running on one rotor.
It was backfiring a lot too.

I thought it blew a seal.

So I was going to just limp it home, but after a few miles the motor came back to life.
Ran fine the rest of the day.

So Ive come to the conclusion that this motor/ecu has some mysteries.

Toby, how are your plugs? I thought for sure once that I had blown my motor. One rotor running, hard to start, sluggish as all get out. I got pissed that I had destroyed the engine that I floored it to vent my anger. After a climb through the RPMs in 3rd, it suddenly jumped back to life. Turns out that I had fouled the crap out of the plugs.

How is your fuel map? Any chance that it's way too rich in parts of the map? Maybe I can take a look at it next time we catch up?

I'm getting closer to making a meet with you! LOL. I just got the brakes bled on the 7 tonight thanks to a 240 buddy and another local rotorhead (Thanks, Adam and Q!).

Now I just have to finish a few small bits of wiring, reinstall my seat, and front bumper, and then get tax and tags taken care of and I'm good.

Anybody going out in Cola tonight? I might head out for a few if I have enough gas in the tank.

Ok. My stock S5 FC TII is having a problem with hesitation. Mainly between 3 and 5k RPMs but happens above and below that occasionally as well, on or off boost, not dependant on throttle position, revs cleanly in neutral, and idle is rock steady. Plugs are less than 5k miles old and pretty clean ( the trailing is a little fouled). All grounds are cleaned. Any thoughts? hesitation definitely feels like a spark cut not fuel or air. But if anybody knows any common problems please let me know.

Haha! It finally happened. Someone thought my 7 had a V8.

So I was at cars & coffee this morning with the rx7. I had the engine running, I was standing around about to leave. Then two guys walked by my 7, one said to the other, that's got a V8 in it.

Like a jackass I went up to him to tell him otherwise with a smile on my face the whole time.

Not much in the Charleston area for rotorheads. Most folks seem to be in Columbia. There's always Cars and Coffee in Mount Pleasant, Saturday AM I think.

//also in North Chuck, crickets around here...

Reese, you mentioned it might be fouled plugs causing the hard start/run issue on my 7.
So I cleaned em a week ago or so, and ever since then, no problem.

Ill be going to C&C tomorrow morning.

Glad to hear that was the issue, Toby! I know that my 1/2 BP was very picky about plugs.

I heard of a Drag/Drift/ and burnout event going on Dec. 22 starting at noon at Dorchester Dragway if anybody is interested.

Also any advice to fix this problem.... I broke a spark plug off just at the hex, luckly all the guts came with it so nothing went in the engine. But its the threaded part of the body and the negative electrode sitting in the hole i guess seized in.

I tryed tons of PB blast, propane torch. So far I split open two sockets, bent a breaker bar, and then snapped the hardened steel extractor. Other than drilling it out and having to retap a new plug hole I dont know what else to do. anybody else even seen this problem?

i did not know it is even possible to bend a breaker bar on a spark plug. if its a trailng and not leaking compression, just leave it in and dont worry about it lol
