No stewards, no rules, and believe it or not, NO harm done... any car ya brung you could run... go til ya ran outta gas if you wanted to... we'd run the oval, the road course, forwards or backwards, at night, match races with four occupants in each car (the chicks in the back seat shifting side to side to help ballast for the turns, the whole while laughing our ***** off so loud the folks in the car next to us could hear it over the tires squealing)...
The 'Caddy' was actually a '68 Lincoln Continetal w/ suicide doors, in dark charcoal, w/ dark vinyl roof and BLACKED OUT windows... the 'Raleigh Rac'n Mafia Mobile'...
My fondest memory of the Mafia Mobile was doing HOT laps around the oval 2am one morning w/ Jay Adams while sh*tfaced, listening to 'Hot Rod Lincoln' blaring full blast on the tape deck...
Steve wasn't officially a Team Highball member, but his team / operation was very tight with Amos, Bunny, Whitt, Sr., and the whole bunch... Amos was an especially good friend, helping out with advice and parts over the years, and partnered in a couple efforts, including building the first ever IMSA All American GT car to hit the track... for well under $5000, it was a Vega body with a 350 Chevy small block, home brewed wild **** suspension and wide hand-made aluminum fender flares... it qualified 19th out of 65+ cars for the 24 Hours of Daytona in '75, only 0.1 sec. off of Milt Mentor's time in a NART Ferrari... not too shabby... unfortunately the 'bullet-proof' IROC type Schaefer clutch inexplicably failed heading out for the last practice the night before the 24 Hours, and Amos, Steve and Dennis ended up running Amos's RS Gremlin instead, finishing 17th overall (highest American car finish)... that was the year John Greenwood had his certified 231 mph top end Corvette there on the pole... although the Vegrant was 10 sec. off his pole time, we were told by somebody keeping track that it was only 1 sec. off his infield interval times, which was amazing to me...
And that's the way it was... back in the ol corp rac'n days...

I had such a blast the first time I went to Rockingham with Steve. I'm sitting here trying to remember what the heck we took down there to test. I think the Formula Ford and the Gremlin...dunno. Just remember going around the track in the Lincoln and Becky's(?) Saab and everyone climbing one of the banked turns and posing for pics like we were racing in cars. Now that I think about it there was one heck of a crowd there that weekend it seems like.
Man, Mike and I had fun getting that Vega ready for Road Atlanta at the Highball shop, then it just about didn't pass inspection...and at the end of the race we sere sitting there going...where's Steve? Seems he tried to pass one more car on the last lap and didn't quite make it and had to be towed in.
"And that's the way it was... back in the ol corp rac'n days..." Man you're right, that time period for me was a blast and I want more stories and info!!!!

I hadn't ordered that gasket with the oil injector lines so I had to go on line last night and order the gasket, $3.30, from Mazdatrix. While I was there I also ordered a steering column surround since I keep finding little peices of plastic and loose screws on the floor mat everytime I clean the interior. I went today to PEP Boys and bought some new vacuum hose, just about every vacuum hose I checked is extremely brittle. I got 7ft of flexible vacuum hose to replace what is on the car and 3ft of the rigid hose incase I need it. What have you used to replace vacuum hoses, the flexible or rigid hose, does it matter? Any chance of the flexible hose collapsing?
Also found that the outside surround of wiring harness connector for the water thermo-sensor was broken but the actual connector itself was still good. I've had a engine code reading for the water thermo-sensor ever since I replaced the water pump a few months ago. Do you know a good way to secure the connector to the sensor? I thought about using some small zip ties and then wrapping the assembly in electrical tape. Any ideas oh Rotary Guru? Other than that, after the gasket arrives, my only problem will be reconnecting all the vacuum hoses correctly when I begin reassembly. I took photos and the shape of the hoses will help determine what they connect. I hope to have it back on the road by the next RRDI.

But when the field came by for the green, he took off in hot pursuit... it was only a *10* lap race, but he worked up to 10th place... absolutely amazing, especially considering what the IMSA GT fields consisted of back then w/ 9??'s Porsches, etc. and by then Al Holbert and others had come along with their $200-400K All American GTs, mostly Chevy Monzas or Ford Mustangs... keep in mind Steve and Amos had about $5K max. invested in that homemade hotrod Vegrant... I remember Holbert's Monza's rear tires were sooo wide that from the rear it looked like a damn steam roller... we were running ol hard Firestones I *think*, but I could be wrong, in any case they sure weren't anything fresh or special...
Started the feature race 20th on the 10th row and ran a consistant race... until as you correctly noted above, he had *one* more Porsche in his sights on the last lap that he coulda got past on the back straight if he got out of T7 good... got jes a tad anxious and a tad too much throttle on the exit causing the dang thing to do a lazy half loop to the right straight into the red clay bank... 'snatching defeat from the jaws of (a relative) victory...'

eric had the same prob. you can iether do the electrical tape or splice in a new connector. i know the 88 type uses the fi connector or bac will also fit, and im assuming the s5 is the same thing. ill get mike to bring a spare if he has one. thx

I remember a couple of yellow Porsches parked in the woods near the scoring tower that I was drooling over. I can't remember if they put them on the track or not though. There were some great cars there, quite an eye feast in the paddock area and on the track.
Mike and I were cheering Steve on every lap, then the last lap we were like...wasn't he in front of that car as they came under the bridge and down the hill to the straight. We stood there and waited and waited....no Steve. Then we see him being towed in....oops! Was all good though, it was one hell of a weekend and I'd do it all over again, except for sleeping in the van!

Burt, it was a good idea to replace the vacuum lines while you have the intake off. They will only give you problems down the road if you don't replace them.
By flexible vacuum hose, are you talking about silicone hose, or regular old vacuum hose? I generally go with the silicone because it holds up better to heat. However, it doesn't like oil much. It will cause it to swell and come off. Just as a precaution, I would use zip ties on them to make sure they don’t come off. I haven't had a huge problem with it, but once I used some cheap stuff from autozone, and had a couple come off. I usually get most of my silicone hose from hose hosetechniques.com. I have never had any problems with there stuff. You shouldn't have a problem with it collapsing, only one that I can think of would be the break booster, just leave that one alone.
The correct way to fix that connector would be to find another pigtail and solder it on to the harness. It would be a good idea, especially if you’re throwing a code. You might want to go ahead and check the sensor while you have it torn down. There’s a pretty good chance however that it’s just the connector. If I’m not mistaken, the s5's WTS have the oval plug right? You might have a hard time finding a "new" one, and no I don’t have one lying around the barn.
Everything in Statesville is good. Not much time to do anything other then work and school. School is going well, just trying to comprehend all the stuff I am learning. You receive so much information in a short amount of time, it’s hard to remember everything. My graduation has been moved from September to December. I added the NASCAR program so I could learn how to do all of the engine building and chassis fabrication stuff. I don’t plan on using it much, but I figured it was a once and a lifetime opportunity. My main goal still is to get into a dealership. The employment people have been talking to me about working for BMW. It is one of the harder programs to get in to because they prefer to have at least two years experience and they only accept 52 students annually. They said doe to my grades and prier experience, I should be able to get in. If I get accepted, it will mean I once again have to move. They only have one campus I know of and that is located in Houston. The good news it will only be for 25 weeks.
I would love to come to a meet sometime this summer. I'll have to see what I can work out. Anyways, hope to see ya'll soon.

Had a very difficult time scraping it off and cleaning up the manifold face.

At the risk of leaving lord knows who all out, here's a few more folks I can think of what came through BGRIHK... in no particular order, nor anywhere's near all inclusive... Grover Sawyer (RIP), Steve Coleman, Andy Moore (RIP), Glenn Mead, Rick Vanhoy, 'The Chief', 'The Hippie', Davis T Rogers, Ann Brantley, Steve Link, Mark Goodwillie, Joe Peacock, Bill Cotton, Bob Henke, Carlton McLawhorn (RIP), Becky Bell, Joe Hege, Rick Sampere, Mikey Leonard, Greg Stamper...
Well... the ol 'Red Mist' is setting in so I'll leave it at that for now... anyone left out is purely unintentional and merely a casualty of me CRS and ol Timer's disease... reckon I'll jes have to suffer the embarrassment when the rest start emerging from the wood work... but that's my story an I'm stick'n to it...

I looked every where short of the local auto retirement centers and could not find a source for a new wiring harness connector. Where would I find one? If someone has a spare connector for the water thermo sensor I can definitely solder a replacement on.
My alternate plan is to use a few small zip ties and electrical tape. I am thinking that I could loop a zip tie around the back side of each connector and then pull the connectors tight and secure by using 3-4 zip ties looped through the ties on each connector. Once I have it all cinched down do some figure 8 taping back and forth over the connector assembly. I bought a new thermo sensor from Mazdatrix just in case it was the sensor that went bad. I think I'll wait to see if the codes go away once the connectors are secured and the car is in running condition. Its fairly easy to get back to the thermo sensor if I have to.

Perky girl, I like the idea that Nic proposed, lets get some drives and events planned for the summer and put them on the RRDI site with a description and all the essentials including costs, if any and proposed dates. We do need to discuss this Saturday and firm up some events. We can plan a Zoo trip again, the cookout, a trip up to VIR, an excursion to Biltmore or Monticello, we can drive out to Morehead City for the Tall Ships event, etc

Dreyko, does Mike have any FDs with interiors up there? I need pretty much a whole interior. I'll be there Sat. and I'm down for this and any other drives, if I'm around NC at the time that is.

He used to drive an FD. The last time that I was down there he did not have anything but you never know. He's simply the best. Fair with his prices and such. I'm trying to get him here this weekend.
