Saturdays In Raleigh, Nc
Update:
I am officially a dumbass. I installed the new alternator without testing the battery b/c every place was closed. Running a new alternator on a dead battery kills it... I had to pull it back out and take it to the shop to get the regulator and rectifier replaced.
Now I know how serial motor-blowers feel.

This may be a stupid question, but do I need to go to a rotary shop to get a compression check done or can a piston shop do it? What are the numbers I need to look for and how much should this cost? Can anyone tell me?
Speed:
A Mazda dealership would have a rotary compression checker, just look at the numbers and don't listen to them when they tell you you need a rebuild when you don't.
A piston compression tester won't give readings that are that accurate, but as long as the compression readings are all similar, it will tell you if all is well.

Yeah, Joey is right about needing a Rotary compression tester. If I remember they should give you 3 readings on each rotor. With the RX-8s out now they should be able to do a competent job on the compression test. I wouldn't know what are respectable numbers for the FD though. I did a quick search on the FD forum and here is what I found:
"From the FAQ:
28) What should the compression be?
Compression test results are reported as six numbers: 3 per rotor. (This is not the same as the compression ratio). Higher, more equal numbers are best. The original Mazda specs dictate 8.5+ kg/cm² as new (121+ psi), with 6.0 kg/cm² (85 psi, 690kpa) being minimum acceptable. Maximum difference should be 1.5 kg/cm² (21 psi, 150kPa) from the highest to lowest value. It is important this test is carried out using proper equipment and under the correct conditions for rpm and engine temperature. Mazda dealers are generally reliable for performing this test, so long as they follow the procedures precisely."

Thanks Bert and Joey, I didn't even think to look in the FAQ, haha. I wonder if I need to adjust my idle before I go get the compression check done. I'll take it to the Mazda dealer here in town I guess. I need to get this done in the next couple weeks so I can tell Johny if I want to buy his engine or just keep mine (if the compression is good). I've been thinking more about getting a blown engine with low mileage that's already ported and rebuild it myself with RA seals. I figure if it has low miles the housings and all that should be pretty good still and if I don't have to get it ported all I need to do is replace all the seals. Right? And with more people going LS1 that leaves more rotary-goodness for us
Hey Bert, when did you say that rotary bbq is again? I met a guy yesterday with an FC here on base and told him about it, and how I'm trying to start a club here. So I may already have another person to bring. I'm hoping it's not June 7-10, as I'll be home on leave for my 10 year reunion. DAMN I'm gettin old, haha.
P.S. I wonder why we haven't seen 'Stina around here lately

that's not funny.hehe.

We missed you at the party Saturday. I'm SO glad David didn't go on his myspace... cuz when we were at the party, he read your message saying you wouldn't be able to make it. lol
it's all good, though. I was holding my laptop for ransom until Saturday, just in case someone accidentally slipped up.
it worked out WONDERFULLY. I apologize to y'all who were trying to contact us to come. My cell had NO service in the building. Effing Verizon.
Also, Jesse, I know a great place that did my car's alignment. They didn't charge me an insane amount, either. Lemme know. They probably wouldn't mind getting my business again.
Check your PM's for the diff. mount.
Eric, on the NC RotorFest event. I think its a good idea and want to pursue it but with working nights and my personal schedule all screwed up as a result I don't have the time to get it organized. I've decided we should get together for a summer kick off cookout and invite all rotary owners, sell tickets, and just have pre NC RotorFest this year. I was going to download the RotorFest poster/flyer to the RRDI site but couldn't figure out how to post it as a work doc.
Maybe we could use this a way of promoting the NC RotorFest for next year. But again finding a central place to hold it, generating interest, and pulling it off in a month will be tricky. Glad you're still pursuing getting a rotary group going in F'ville, let me know what you think about scaling back the RotorFest idea but still having a cookout somewhere in central NC. I'd like to get someone to cater the cookout, like Q Shack and simply tell them how many people will be there and sell advance tickets.
On a fun note, who is up for going to see Cars next month? Check out the Pixar site and all the movie trailers: http://adisney.go.com/disneypictures...ec=3&subsec=13
Looks like a blast and we could all go see it together on Sunday June 11th, challenge other car groups in the area to show up, and have a whole lot of fun, get a burger before or after the movie.

Didn't know if it was still going on or if y'all had move up to Adventure Landing by that time. Went up Capital Blvd and on the way saw Greg heading south, by the time I got turned around and tried to catch him could find his red vert anywhere down the road. Checked AL out but no one was there. When will David be back in Rawley?
He's coming to the meet!

I understand not having time, no pressure here Bert. I hadn't heard anything about it so I wasn't sure if you were being Dr. Frankenstein with the plan and waiting to tell everyone til later. Whatever you chose to do, you always come up with good plans. Both sound like fun events so if you need help planning this thing let me know what you're wanting to happen and I'll do my best to help. Maybe at one of the upcoming meets you can give me, Nick and Jason a copy of the flyer and we'll just make copies of it and post it instead of getting it online. Catering sounds good too, I don't like having to make food while partying, haha. I wouldn't mind meeting up to go to that movie either but I might just be getting back from Missouri on the 11th. Keep me posted.
