Old guys with 12As club meeting
Ok guys i got one for you.
The 82 back fires and does not want to idle, i look under the car and there is "tons" of smoke coming from the cat. Clogged cat maybe?
What im thinking is that the clogged cat is making the car run rough and causing it to backfire and not idle like it should.

Could be a clogged cat. Disconnect the header (manifold from the cat and stick a screwdrive in between to keep it open. Drive around gently. If the problem goes away it is a clogged cat.
Yup, thats the first thing i checked for
Will try that

Check your ignition and make sure its got good spark all around. Could be
dumping lots of unburned fuel down the exhaust which would cause the
backfires and a hot cat.
Oh yeah and make sure theres no banana
Good one Billy!

For some reason I can only get about 12 gallons of gas (instead of the usual 15 gallons) into the tank before it's "full" and won't take any more fuel - gas gushes out the filler tube but the gauge reads only 3/4 full. Do you suppose someone stuffed a banana in my fuel tank when I wasn't looking?
231 x 3 = 693 / 9.83 = 70.5 bananas in your tank to take up that much space.
It would take roughly 30 seconds to insert a banana into an automotive gas tank therefore a total of 35.25 minutes to complete the task.
I would propose a person would be caught before successfully inserting 70 bananas into a vehicles gas tank therefore I feel you should look into other possibilities and leave this option until last.

I see your point Billy, but still, the exhaust has been smelling awfully sweet lately and I don't see what else could be taking up all that space in the tank.
Maybe Crit will loan me his othrilloscope and I can take a look down in there.
Gene, good idea, that occurred to me too this afternoon so I took a look underneath, but the tank is fine, no dents. Also this is the second fill up I've had trouble with and the first one occurred just before that truck ran me off the road, so there doesn't seem to be a connection with my travels on the I85 neutral ground.

^^ That is why I love the OGTA. There is endless intel to be had.
I believe that Mr. Farrell had this isuue with his SA. I think it turned out to be a faulty level sender. It was giving him a "false empty", in turn showing less on fill-ups. I could and most likely am wrong, but just a shot.

Hey Dave, forgot to mention I've got all kinds of 84/85 wiring harnesses I need to get rid of, if they'll work on the rebuild. Will bring 9-7.
Nope on the faulty sender, it's working just fine. I usually top off at 14-15 gallons, last two times I could hardly squeeze 10. And the sender was telling it like it is, you've got 3/4 tank idiot.
Of course, not thinking it could possibly be anything wrong with The Silver One, I blamed the pump (the first time).
What? Maybe it is the sender? And that's why my mileage has been off?
It's all coming together. But I still don't get it.
I still want to othrilloscope the thing.

adding a wire from the ground side of the sender to one of the screws that holds
the sender cover on and voila, my gas level is accurate now all the time.
Now mine was an SA sender, so you know it was easier and simpler to work on but
I suspect the FB senders might have the same issue.
Ray the bad gas gauge reading won't affect mileage in any way. Now it may be your
filling up sooner than you need to. When my gas level was bad I went by the
trip odometer mileage to tell when to fill the tank.
Sept. OGTA on Tuesday
OGTA meet this Tuesday... The weather should be great for hanging out in the parking lot and admiring rotaries and sitting on the patio and sipping a cold one. Who's planning to come out?
I planning to be there. As usual, it depends on how Michelle is doing.

Good point Brett. You would never see this on an FB.
Yep, those FC's are electronic nightmares. I've never seen an FB clock skip a beat. Brett, you've had that car for what, three days??? and it's already self destructing?
Should'a kept that sweet red GS.
As I recall Crit's othrilloscope operates with LED's, so you don't get the heat generation like the ones the proctologists use. Safe for use in gas tanks.
