installed a diy style vapor canister only to have too much vacuum in my gas tank. it actually buckled the gas tank. right now it looks like a crushed soda can.

any ideas on what I did wrong? I got the upper vent going to a check valve, then the vapor canister then to the intake. is the check valve backwards?

On the 85 GSL-SE I replaced the passenger side weatherstrip. Would have done the drivers side as well but that side was in the wind and shade so too chilly. Could I have turned the car, of course I could but without a working clutch it is a bit more of an issue. The clutch master cylinder comes in tomorrow.

Also glued the left rear side marker lens back together. If I had found one easily with a web search I would have just bought one. Next step in fixing it is to sand the outside face smooth and apply a fiberglass bandaid over the whole front. I did this to both front turn signals on the other car and they are approaching a year of age and 500 miles.

On the 85 GSL-EV I replaced the torsion bar bushings and if I had known they were in as good of condition as they were I would not have bothered.

I wish Mazda had used a little anti-seize compound on these threads. I find I say that a lot these days!

With the lights turned on the alternator is probably placing an additional load of around half a horsepower on the original rotary engine. For me this represents a reduction in range of a mile per hour of operation. I am estimating that the load will be reduced to about a tenth of that once I get all the running lights and headlights replaced with LED's.

If you want to replace a license plate bulb with an LED the correct bulb part number from superbrightleds.com is BA9S-W4-90-12v and cost me $2.98 each. This is a 9mm base bulb. I know this fits the 85 GSL and GSL-SE and probably everthing except for the 79 with the license plate above the bumper. It produces a pleasant cool white illumination slightly brighter than the 28 year old bulbs that were in the car. The bulb finder on the web site gives the wrong bulb as a replacement.
I would love to convert one of my '7s with a bad engine to electric, but that electric stuff is still just too pricey.I can rebuild the rotary for about 1/3 to 1/4 the cost of a decent electric conversion. The controllers in particular seem way too spendy. Maybe I'm just a cheapskate? :P

You're not a cheapskate; the mfg's just know they have a 'boutique' market where people will spend large sums for emotional reasons. No economy of scale taking place, & little to no competition.

I saw that UPS had delivered the new clutch master cylinder for the 85 GSL-SE so I took off work an hour early and installed it before it got too dark. I ended up installing the drivers seat in the dark. We don't need to go off Daylight Savings Time, what we need is double DST!

And then I went for a 40 mile drive. Gods these cars are still great! Not driving one for even a couple of weeks you forget just how balanced everything is.

I would think that the valve is backwards. The tank should be able to suck air through the CC, but gas should not be able to flow from the tank to the CC.

Good luck...

If you have any tips on the carb rebuild, please share, I think I will have to do the same in the near future.

WA Making a run to Atkins

Came into a check I wasn't expecting, so I'm going to buzz on down to Atkins, and get a couple of goodies for my baby.

So I removed my gas tankthe other day cause my car has sat awhile and the gas was smelling like varnish. Turns out the little filter inside the tank on the fuel line was clogged with black tar like crap. So I need a new one but can't seem to find it anywhere because the parts stores only have in line filters and not the little in tank one. Any ideas on how I can come about one?

Continuing to try to replace the front link bushings on the 85 GSL-EV with polyurethane. The problem is the sleeve is rusted firmly to the bolt. If I can't get it off tonight I will just grind the head off the bolt and it will all fall apart. Looks like Mazdatrix has the correct bolt, spacer and cup washers so fairly easy to just throw a little cash at the problem and it will go away.

I am going on a 3000 mile road trip to the west coast over thanksgiving time frame and I want to take the 85 GSL-SE. Its a little risky weatherwise but the car is running well and if I can avoid a blizzard it should be ok. I made a list of the stuff that I want to do before I go.

Replace brake flex hoses with stainless. This gets the brake fluid replaced which is also on the list.

Replace clutch flex hose with stainless.

Replace the transmission and differential fluids.

Oil change.

Maybe change the coolant.

Replace the weatherstrip on the drivers side door.

Replace the right front side spring and strut. (already did the left side because the spring had collapsed.)

Alignment. It is pulling a little to the right after changing out the left front spring and strut.

It is a lot of stuff to get done.

No it's a good question.
I had to blow off mine due to the gunk build up restricting fuel flow to the carb. :/ I need the same question answered.

WA New pads and check-up

Got my box of new pedal pads today, the brake pad had worn thru on one side, and had fallen off, glad that Atkins had some in stock. I took the car down to a local Mazda guy to see if he had any ideas on the rough starting and sometimes running, and it looks like a new Weber is in my future when I can afford it, also the new header, and ripping the old Smog system out, anybody know of a metal fan that will fit an FB? I'd like to get rid of as much plastic as I can.

Ah ok lol! Yeah mine can't just get blown out to get me going, it is literally covered in gunk that looks like and feels like tar. It's shot, it wouldn't even let fuel get to the pump from the tank! .
