Yes, I realized the center iron may be a TII iron. As for the ports on the end, I believe there are ports on the NA LIM I'm using that match up.

It could be...I'm not that familiar with the different 13B setups. Either way, I'm going to need to find a way to block that passage off.

right so the gsl-se 13b 6 port has the center hole and not the outer holes.
the S4 13b 6 port has the outer holes and not the center hole
the s5 13b 6 port has the center hole again (GSL-SE style) and not the S4 outer holes.

S4 turbo also had the center hole, thats about all i know from experience, rest i'd have to look up.

You can also check out manifold gaskets on mazdatrix to get a sense of what you're looking at.

Mazdatrix's S4 gaskets all have the hole for the center irons, even the NA gaskets. That's what confused me at first.

It just looks like that the PO used S4 NA end irons and either a TII or GSL-SE center iron.

Thats right they have one gasket with openings for both even tho the block itself doesnt have it. IIRC thats for both s4/s5 cheaper cork one. The S5 dedicated gasket it super spendy plastic one.

It's also for the super-spendy S4 gasket.

I didn't realize you could bolt on S4 irons to a GSL-SE. I guess that would make sense then. Did you say the SE doesn't have the ACV ports on the end irons? If so, I guess I'll be blocking those too.

You can't -- coolant seals are wrong.

Mike, I have a set of RE-SI end plates and they do have ACV ports.

Wait, so you're saying that the whole lot may be a GSL-SE keg? This has an S4 front cover as well as an S4 front counterbalance. The motor was supposedly pulled from an '86. I can see the housings are SE housings based on the Wankel licensing stamp on them.

I cannot tell what the irons are...there is an "A" stamp on the front iron on the right side of the water pump housing mount (as you're facing the engine). The rear iron has only a "B" stamp. Not "3B", just "B". There is no marking that I can see on the center iron (usually found around the oil filler neck).

I'm kind of at a loss as I have an S4 flywheel for it that I'd picked up thinking it was an S4 engine. Now I'm not sure if it's the correct flywheel. I'm thinking since there's an S4 front counterweight, the rest of the rotating assembly would be S4, but I guess I can't know for sure withing pulling the motor apart. Which I don't want to do since the compression is outstanding.

Maybe I'm over-thinking this and I just need to get out in the garage and plug those ACV passages and bolt that damn intake manifold on.

On the bring side, I got my SE shock tubes painted so I'm ready to start the front suspension swap.

Last 2 nights:

Cleaned and mounted the power steering pump and cooling lines. WOW they chose a horrible routing path for that cooling line. Took like an hour of me and a buddy wiggling and fenagling that thing around and under the steering column. Why, Mazda, WHY!?

Now I wish I had sent the lines in to be chromed or something. But oh well. When i pull everything out to repaint the engine bay I'll do it then.

Tonight: Hook up the fluid lines, bleed the system, and enjoy the power steering that the car was designed for!

fm, how do you know it's an S4 front counterweight? Remember the GSL-SE also had a 45 degree bevel to clear the aux port lump in its path.

Here's a bright idea. Look in the exhaust ports. 2mm or 3mm?

OK, update. The guy that sold me the motor finally got back to me. It IS in fact, a full GSL-SE motor. I guess you're right about the counterweight...there is a thread that describes the counter weights used and from my measurements it seemed like the front CW was from an S4. BUT, I'm not sure how accurate the thread is, it was late last night when I was puzzling this all out, and I'm a n00b.

Anyway, now that I know that I have a full GSL-SE keg, I know I'm going to need to get an SE flywheel. Now I've got to decide what to do about the S4 intake manifold, wiring harness, injectors, coil packs, oil metering pump, ECU, that I was planning on using on this setup. It would *seem* to me that I could use all of these bits to upgrade the motor without much trouble...but what do I know? Thoughts?

I'm sorry to hear that.
Watching the sun explode would be awesome. People pretty much just suck.

As to what I did to and with, the wobbly seat thread made my minor seat wobble worse. Having a rare Friday off I took my 4 yr old navigator for a 90 mile ride in the country to visit a junkyard and a battlefield of The War of Northern Aggression.

And when I was brushing it off my lovely young wife came out and said "I've got an attachment for my carpet cleaner that'll do that". And so she did.

ioTus, it's a Mazda 3 mazdaspeed version seat. I was looking at sparco, corbeau, etc. I had promised myself when I got the car I'd do everything on the cheap, but it's easy to be lazy.

Saw some threads w Rx8 seats, but don't like the 1 piece look so much. A kid who works for me has an 08 3, I measured, looked on eBay. Saw the Speed 3 seats. Looked in car parts.com, saw this and it's mate for 90 bucks each 40 miles from me.

Dirty as hell but cleaned up good. Gonna grind off riveted on brackets and bolt sliders to a Planted 1st gen purpose built bracket. There I'll spend.

I think you want 07 thru 09. The new ones are a little bigger.

I was going to say that you cannot use a GSL-SE center iron with S4 irons, the grooves for the water seal are on the housings on the GSL-SE and in the S4 theyre on the irons.

Yep, that was covered before. I originally thought it was a T2 housing. No matter...now that I know what I have, I have decisions to make. I can go with an s5 lower intake manifold to keep the ACV ports working. But then I have to figure out how I'll open the auxiliary ports since those are controlled electronically, not by air like the S4 ports are.

Or I'll fill them and keep the S4 lower intake manifold I already have (and spent ages cleaning up). This will, of course, necessitate a creative solution for smog.

I'm glad my S4 alternator is still useable. The S4 water pump housing will take minor work to get to work, but it'll be a big weight savings over the stock cast iron one. I'll need a different flywheel.

On another note, this evening I test fit the 16" Volk TE-37s on the SE spindles I just finished with the GC coilover sleeves installed. The adjustable spring seat just clears the tire when it's moved to the very top of the sleeve. I checked and with the 6" springs that were shipped, the car will still be dropped at least an inch...probably more. I have a set of 7" springs just in case that's too low and I'm rubbing the fenders.

What loving support! She is a goddess of restoration!

as for my progress. I coached my mechanic on the proper wiring for the starter (with the inhibitor circuit for the automatic transmission). I had to snail-mail pics. He doesn't have email, BUT he works on old cars, so I can't complain.

I drove home from Las Vegas, having attended most of What Happens in Vegas 6 (I had to leave early this AM, so missed the Sunday cruise and BBQ.)

A very friendly, welcoming bunch of people they were, too, with some lovely cars and lively stories. It was a good time and I think I made some new friends.

They gave me this lovely parting gift:

Cool to see DD and 13x! Someday I'd like to make it out to WHiV, maybe in a few years.

I drove mine again today, still under 12a power. Can't wait to get the 13bt in and running but it'll be a few days at least. Getting the driveshaft shipped on Wednesday or Thursday and will hopefully have it done within a week or two here.

DD, musta been a real shock, what with that beater. Glad to hear you got out and did well.

I tinkered with the Sterling, will attach tomorrow and hope to be delighted.
