Scott was speaking to a guy the other day who is some bmw motorsport technical something or other. He says they use some kind of resistor to trick the ecu into believing the air intake temps are a certain temp when there not. He says it's a popular mod on Lotus Elise's as well. Next time I down his way he said he would give me one to try out. For him it works, knowing me i'll never get round to trying it out.
I just finished pouring out 3 litres of methanol for tomorrow.
i got ht leads to change in the morning, my spark plugs, oil change after clocking up another 150 miles before tomorrow 6am. Then tune it when I get to the strip. Hopefully the strip won't be too busy, see you tomorrow mate.

Looking good Brian..
I love to see the safety factor of using a fuel cell in any installation where the cockpit could be compromised.
Safety is job1.

Steve@SMC does now offer a flojet pump so you can run straight methanol. Keep an eye on that older system.. use your test button.. over time having a pump submerged in alcohol is a bad thing..
For your calcs.. the M7 nozzle flows 7 gallons per minute at 100 PSI. The SMC pump at position 10 was like 75 PSI. You need a pressure guage to verify, and then substract intake pressure. So 75-20(psi boost)=55 effective..
Not a whole lot of alcohol.

Ive seen one of those systems run for years, so in my mind, the reliability is not in question. I am also aware that he makes Methanol rated systems now.
FYI, I am not a newbie to alcohol injection..

Brian. It was an interesting day. The idea sounds well worth a go. I sub contract to Lotus cars so i may be able to find out about it. I have got a couple of things to be addressed after today

Hey, I have another data point for everyone.
This past weekend we had a dyno day. I had my car dyno'd, and did back to back runs, one without water injection, and one with. I have datalogit logs as well as dyno logs from the runs too, in case anyone is interested.
My A/F is decent, I do have one area you can see that is too lean around 4400, then one too rich around 5200, but then it's pretty solid 11.0 from there on out without the water on. The A/F curve with the water on was almost identical, except the numbers were .3-.4 richer once the water started up (7psi).
The only issue with the runs was that the IC was a little heat soaked, and my intake temps were close to 45C, which is a little high for my car. As a reference, the other FD in the vid (S-MAN) was running about 30C for his pulls. Our cars are *very* similar in terms of setup, and we were fairly pleased with the numbers given both cars were running 8.5-9psi at max power. As you can see in the video the pulls were on a Dyno Dynamics machine.
The video is embedded into a webpage as part of my gallery, and is Windows Media 9. I've tested with Internet Explorer 6 and Firefox.

Hey 93-FD, that was a cool video! Nice video and sound editing skills, too. I got a big kick out of it. I miss going to dyno day events; it's been awhile. I need to get one organized here in the next couple of months or something.
How'd the WI perform overall? Unless I got it backwards, it looks like there's a marginal loss in power with it on. Even if this is so, and there may just be too much volume of it going in (did it steam out the exhaust?), then it will buy you a measure of reliability that you didn't have before.

You will never gain any horsepower with water injection unless you lean out the mixture or advance the timing.
BDC how did you alky install go have you done any mapping since yet ?

I still need to scan the graph printouts I got from them, I have boost/HP vs RPM as well as HP/TQ vs RPM. Additionally I have the raw dyno logs I could scan as well.

The WI worked like I thought it would. The 299 number on the first run was pretty close to what I expected. Originally I was going for a large street port, but I think in the end I got a medium size, so at 8-9psi of boost and a dyno dynamics machine I think the number is reasonable.
The WI lowered the A/F a little across the board as expected. Because of that I did lose ~5% HP with it on, but again, that was expected since I didn't touch any tuning imbetween runs. I think I stated earlier in the thread, I'm really just going for reliability, not big power. When I eventually run the 50/50 water/methanol mix I expect the runs to be nearly the same, but at the same time still have the cooling benefits. Again the goal is to still allow the car to run safely with WI off should I run out (or have some other failure in the system) unexpectedly.
I did not see any steam, but I was in the car during the runs. There was someone watching the exhaust and he didn't say anything about it. I did have the coolingmist controller on the lowest setting. It's possible I still had to much. Based on the numbers I posted before from the track, the temps were the same with all the settings I tried, meaning I could probably keep pulling back some more until they start to go up. I would have to break out the software and serial cable to make that work which I haven't done yet.
At some point when I get the car street tuned safely to 15-17psi, I'd like to go back to the dyno and rent it for a hour or two and do some experimentation with the amount of water going in as well as trying to go over the whole map cell by cell and tune them up.
All in all though, everything went well.

I have been runing water/alky injection for 4yrs., just chicken to lean it out and add timing both,(to many blown 13Bs in the back junk pile),but I ran methonal back in the 60s, blown s/b chevys, they went good, one day I was talking to DON GARLITS, he said step up to NITROMETHANE, knocked a full second off times. SO I have been asking this for about 10yrs. rotary guys,who has run a load of NITROMETHANE thru a rotary, its time someone found out what would take place, Im retired, so no money for trying. but love that little DEVIL rotary.

Erm the plugs..... i got a confession to make....... I am still on the 9's
I never got off my lazy butt to get any.
I went and got some push fit connectors for the alch injection today LOL

I had a crack at Nitro earlier on in the year. I eventually ran out of time to tune with it but the results were really good. Its an avenue i will be re visiting very soon.
