Old guys with 12As club meeting
So I found the motor in my FD this weekend. Now I just need to figure out how to get the stupid solenoid rack out. Then maybe I'll be able to see the pulsation damper I am trying to replace. Good times.
So, August meet?
So, August meet?
Well probably should PM this but... sorry for the novel.
First off: Get a roll of masking tape. Wrap EVERY connector and vaccum line you remove and make a note of where it goes. I use the # method myself..marking the hose tape 1 and the other side that it goes to with a matching 1 etc.. It is Sooooo easy to mix up a vaccum line during this job and cause you headaches for days or longer troubleshooting it. Trust me, I have been there before and had to clean up for othersthat did their own or had a "buddy" do it for them. Also a digital camera is a good aid. I took pics of everything I removed before and after. That way I had a reference if anything should happen during the job.
The easiest(haha) way to get the rack out is too first remove the UIM. Then the fuel lines coming from the firewall. Then the fuel line from the metal pipe to the primary rail.(kinda tight quarters. but it can be done with a set of needle nose for the hose spring clamps). Then there are 4 hoses that attach to the LIM( the ones that go thru to the other side
Remove those from either side,..the mani or the nest) Then there are a couple more hoses that feed the turbo control and pre-control solenoids. Also one or 2 that go to the primary turbo elbow area.
Next there is a 12mm head bolt( 2 i think actually) that hold the whole metal fuel and solenoid rack down to the block. Also there are 2 lines that go from the nest to the oil injectors. those need to be taken off to remove the nest.. Then the connectors need to be taken off the solenoids. Then you can remove the entire nest assembly as on unit. It is quite cumbersum and awkward, but I think it is easier then trying to get the phillups head screws that hold the solenoid rack to the main metal rack. As these will ALWAYS be stuck and strip,..IF they aren't already.
Now that the rat's nest is out you still have to remove the primary fuel rail. BUT FIRST!! Please take a minute to clean the road debris/dirt etc.. from around the primary fuel area. You don't want crap falling into the injector holes causing air leaks or worse
Removing the rail will mean disconnecting the injectors connectors, removing the 2 12mm head bolts that hold the primary rail down. Also there is a 17mm head banjo bolt that feeds the secondary rail.Ther are 2 sealing washers here. You should replace these as well. Also while you are here you may as well replace the fuel hoses with new Fuel Injection hose from the store, OR call ray Crowe @ Malloy Mazda 1-888-533-3400 Ray = the man for Rx7 parts. He offers a fuel line kit I believe ( a bit more $$ though than the auto store
)
Also all your vaccum hose's may be crusty and brittle. a few may break. The solenoids as well are VERY fragile as they are plastic and have been in the FD oven for years!!Mazda offers a kit for this as well. Again Ray Crowe
Or do the silicon upgrade.
This is ALL from memory! It has been a couple years since I have been into a twin rat's nest. I am sure I forgot one or 2 things. So don't quote me to the word. Just trying to help you out.

Tim, here you go, from Mazdatrix's website
http://www.mazdatrix.com/c-silhos.htm
I used their guide for my vacuum line and came up WAY short because they forgot to call out that the GSL-SE is different under the hood. I'd order 150% of what they call out. Even if you DO manage to get all the lines hooked up correctly, one cracked line will **** you off bad, and you don't want to have to redo it.
Silicone vacuum hose and Hylomar are two things that people try to talk me out of, but they've just saved my butt too many times, I'm sure.

I just did this. I ordered what they said for the 2nd gen thinking that it would be close to that. However, I was still short on the small stuff. However, I also replaced the 5/6 port pressure line too. If you didn't do this, you might be able to get by with the 13'..but I didn't replace the OMP injector vac line either. I would get at least 16'..probably more like 18'-19' if you are doing the OMP injectors and the 5/6 port pressure line. On the big stuff, I probably only used half of what they said. You might be able to get by with like 4' or so instead of the 6' they list.

Yeah, and given the labor of doing it over or having to wait until the next weekend if you're short, I'd definitely order extra. Now that I think about it, I think that I too had a lot of leftover larger-diameter stuff, but the small-diameter that was used for the rats nest and nearly everything else is what came up short.
Yeah, I've been labeling the crap out of everything
. Using color coded tabs and a number system. I've gotten the coils/rack out, then was looking the that solenoid rack and everyone saying "just take the screws off the front and back." My first thought there was "how the hell would I do that?" So I started looking into doing the whole rack. It did appear easier. My fuel lines sit directly in front of those screws, so they'd have to come out anyway.
Fuel lines look new. Vacuum lines look surprisingly good. I had mazcare do the LIM gasket a year or 2 ago. I think they replaced a lot of rubber while they were in there. I may still get some silicone though.
Fun times though. Really appreciating the single Tee'd vacuum line on the 12A at the moment.
Thanks for the input

I don't want to interrupt the fun with business, but we need to decide on an August meeting date for OG@TA.
Given the success of our recent weekend meets, OJSC's plans to meet on Saturday, August 16th at Fort Yargo would give us an excellent chance to up the 12A count:

We can have a workshop on "Why Rotaries are Better than Boingers"

man, there is so much going on the weekend of the 16th.... my one roomie and his friends are going Kayaking near Athens on the Broad River, other 2 roomies are doing a bike track day at Road Atlanta, then there is the meet... its a toss for Kayaking or the meet...
but what about this Old Skool Jap meet the same day?

Ray, the August meet date hasn't changed. It's still Tuesday night at Jeffrey's. My parents are having personal friends and their sunday school class to the lake house over the next 3 weekends, so it hasn't changed anything.
As for weekends, I'm up for anything. I'll drive out to Fort Yargo and the old-schoolers meet.

By the way, can we start a new tradition of asking for parts about a week ahead of time so we stop forgetting stuff everyone else needs?
For this week, I'm bringing:
Diodes for the flash-to-pass FB mod
Freeze plugs for Chris's fuel injector bungs
Oil pressure and voltage combo gauge for Simononononovich (can never remember how many syllables).
Grey GS driver's door panel with manual windows
Hood prop rod clips for everyone that's broken theirs.
Anything else?

Sounds Good Crit, we probably need to spread these week enders out a bit anyway. You're lake house is a perfect place for so many reasons (except you having to go out and get it ready, then clean up)!
So Tuesday August 5th it is, Jeffery's in Suwanee, 7:00 pm or so, a meeting for the regulars.
Then on August 16th we can go out to Fort Yargo and show those Toyota drivers what real Old School Japanese is all about. Here's the link to their post:

Hey Kent, it would be terrific if you could make it down the 16th!! We can arrange for a place to stay if you like (Crit's if you want to party, my house if you want to sleep).
Zach, if you are even hinting about frailty in your "Blue" quotation, I should point out that I'm the only one who has not missed a single OGTA event this year!
And that reminds me all you OG@TA Old Schoolers, August 5th is our 1st birthday!

How far back does the Jeffrey's meet go, Ray? I know that it was only formalized into OGTA in the last year, but it's been at least three years total, right?
Ray, when did you move to GA? It seems like you and I have been meeting at Jeffery's on a regular basis for 6-7 years.
Crit, you were just a pup the first time I met you at Jeffery's.
Tim I've asked the guys and gals to slow down on their posting so that we don't eclipse the Crossroads thread, that would be disrespectful. What's this new project you've got going that you're gonna put that different kind of carb on? An SA I hope!
That was one sweet SE Crit had back then.
Ray, how did it work out with that Kerry/Edwards stuff? Save the rebuttle for in person.
Hey, this thing on 8/16 looks like it could be fun.
