You know, a 350'ish HP Aston is sounding pretty good right now.

^Yep it would be a shame to have to drive one of those slow things around. Could get used to it though:

Not to throw another monkey wrench into the ignition story, but the MSD rotary specialist I spoke with today feels the current coils on the car won't work for higher levels of boost. He recommends keeping the current ignitor coils in the trailing positions but replacing the leading coils with non-injector ones and then running these with an ignition amplifier. After lots of electronic speak and mumbo jumbo, I emailed the info to Steve Kan.

We'll see.

As for the radiator thingy (couldn't resist Ramy), the one I have is being powder coated black for me but other members have asked for a source. Thought you could hook them up with something. Maybe you might want to post pics of a few types and then members would have something to consider.

David, if you're looking into replacing ignition stuff, this company claims to build the latest greatest ignition amplifier. If it's as good as they claim, it would be great for use with a turbocharged rotary engine. A couple of college Formula SAE teams have used them and measured HP gains of 5-10% when used with their 600cc restricted motorcycle engines (80-90hp).

A GB on different models would be very hard to do, unless it's more of a large order than GB (ie standard pricing), since GBs across diff models and manufacturers won't exactly work hehe

Ramy, could always put up a pool of common ones (most requested) and then see which one has the highest support and have a GB on that one?

I personally would love to have one with a dragon on it... but then again... I guess I could make my own.... hmmm...

An Autronic 500R with M&W coils would certainly do the trick. I look forward to your 20lb dyno graph ;o)

I don't really care about a discount as much as I want a separate thread to discuss this so we aren't cluttering up David's thread. I guess I should have said in the vendor's section, where I believe that you have a forum. Wasn't trying to split hairs, I typically associate the vendor's section with Group Buys-my bad.

Hello David

Im sad to see that ur still having ignition problems.

Iv'e had the same thing, and i borowed some Crane Cams LX91 coils this weekend, and bam no ignition break up at all. Will boost to 8000 rpm with no problem at 20 psi.

So i just orderd 4 new Crane Cams LX92 coils from summitracing at the whopping price of 60 bucks a piece.

I will be running em with a Autronic 500R CDI box. Wich is probably one of the best ign amps on the market. It's kinda expensive but it's realy good. And im also running NGK B11EGV spark plugs.

No, Gotham swapped out the stock GM LS1 coils for the MSD ones with the promise of 50% more spark. This (incease in spark) has been validated by several sources but unfortunately it's not working on my car.

So, while I'm waiting on a solution for the ignition issue, Gotham has been working on venting my hood for me. After looking into aftermarket hoods, I've decided to stick with the stock one and have two vents cut into it. This has already been done and the hood has been primed:

By this weekend, the hood should be repainted and clear coated. AJ, the body shop guy, has ordered mesh for me:

He's taken the mesh and "pressed" it (think a bowl with a thin lip - these will then press up into the hood for a stock look) and sent them out for black powder coating so it should be wrapped up next week. Hopefully it will help to keep temps down while maintaining a stock look.

Hmmm, who is that doing the priming? AJ, the body shop guy?

I see..

And this 50% increase is compare to LS1 coils? Others i've heard/told me that LS1 coils are good upto 1000HP... And very reliable upto that point. This has been told to me by several 20B owners and experts in this field (what do you think Crispeed??).

I just hope you get all the issues squared away ASAP and hoping this doesn't turn into your "other" experiences.. Personally, I think your currently situation sucks and if I was in it, I'll be quite PISSED (especially after 2 very close, fail attempts to pick up the car).

Good luck David and Cant wait to see it!

^Yes, I've heard that also. What exactly happened to the 50% increase in spark with the MSDs? Here is what MSD posts on thier website:

So, it's not unreasonable to think the MSDs would work better. The M&W ignition person I talked to said the MSDs were a better choice than the sotck LSD coils. Curiously, the MSD rep I spoke to recommended I replace the ones I had installed (8245s) with 8207s in the leading positions and add one ignition amp unit. Crispeed recommends 8207s in both the leading and trailing positions combined with two MSD ignition amps. I emailed this combo to Steve but haven't heard back yet. I'd think he might like this setup as it uses two MSD amps and he won't have to vary how he controls each set of coils. In this setup, it's my understanding that he'd use the Haltech for all 6 of the coils. What he didn't like about using one amp for 3 coils is he had to control these differently than the ones he didn't use the amp for.

David,

Not trying to waste your time but I'm slightly confused to how Steve is running these coils and what amp he's using?? So, he's using single MSD amp to run both Leading and trailing on the 20b? Do you have how he set that up (diagram)?

^The above coils have ignitors in them so they don't require an AMP. Matter of fact, they won't work with an AMP for this reason. They were tied directly into the Haltech and controlled by the ECU.

The net/net of it is the coils just won't work above 14 lbs. of boost. This seems to be their limitation on the 3 rotor setup. After much debate and several very helpful suggestions from forum members, we're swapping these out for 6 8207 MSD coils and 2 MSD DIS-4 Plus ignition amp units. The 8207 coils are "ignitorless" so they can be used with ignition amp setups. Crispeed recommended this setup and has achieved up to 1,000ish HP on it. It's my (very limited) understanding one AMP box will be used for the primary and one for the secondary coils.

The MSD components are due in tomorrow so hopefully Steve and Gotham will have the issue solved by the end of the week.

David:

Great overall information!

The painter looks good... Any more pics of her?...

The stock hood venting is a good idea... Cant wait to see it on the car.
