In general, it is very possible to get sponsorships for street cars and they range from discounts to getting the product for free. As Ruler Mark points out, my car is pretty high profile not just on here but in other places as well. So, that definitely helps. It also helps to have connections and I've established more than a few of them over the years.
For sponsorships, you usually put together a marketing plan for the proposed sponsor where you list the shows or track events you will attend. I also add to this social media exposure and other "proprietary" stuff I will do to gain exposure for the product. All in all, the more high level your car and the better developed the marketing plan is, your chances for a sponsorship increase.
Specifically on the Borg Warner sponsorship, they gave me the EFR 9180 at no cost and with no stipulations on what I have to do. I did tell them I'd post up the results but this was after they agreed to the sponsorship. I am sure if the results are good, they will sell more than a few of the EFR line to fellow rotary enthusiasts so it's a win-win for all. It also helps that Borg Warner is here in Asheville NC so they'll get to see in person the car and the turbo install.

I need to give this a shot, I would LOVE an EFR internal waste gate turbo but just cant afford something like that right now. Worst they can say is no right? I do lots of track days, I just need to start putting together a marketing plan.

Fortunately for me, you aren't sponsoring the turbo as it seems I would never have received it

Did you sign a "sponsorship" agreement?
t-von, yes I am critical, I learned in school to think critically. I just really do not understand how someone gets a sponsorship and does not have any obligations to the company that is sponsoring them.

david, my comment about the turbo size was only due to that turbine AR being quite small for a 3 rotor.
most of the 3 rotor projects i've seen over the years have run ~1.3 AR hot sides because the triple exhaust ports flow so much damn exhaust.
are you going to be monitoring EGT and pre-turbo exhaust backpressure? i am just curious, not trying to talk bad about your project or anything.

Well you size the A/R for where you want your powerband. 20b do have alot of exhaust energy. That doesn't mean that every 20b setup should run an A/R so large to move the power peak into the stratosphere. Personally, I would rather have the smaller A/R for improved low to mid range performance and far less lag. I mean that's where David's street car is gonna live most of it's life anyways. Engines that live there lives in the lower rev ranges, generally last longer to.

My goals remain pretty simple. To have a streetable car that will be fun to take to the track. So for me, I'd rather have something that spools up quickly and provides in the 550-600 WHP range with the torque of a 3-rotor. That becomes a fun ride versus having massive HP that hits all at once resulting in power you can't use anyway. Or at least not for me and my driving skills.
The EFR 9180 with the 1.05 AR seemed to be the best of both worlds. The turbo should come on quickly due to the billet wheel and the power should be at or above what I'd need. I was very happy with the 675 WHP I previously made at 18 PSI with the Precision unit and that turbo had a smaller compressor wheel and a .96 AR. So, it would seem the BG unit, with a larger billet wheel and the 1.05 versus .96 AR would work well for my application. It's never been tried before to my knowledge on a 3-rotor so it should be fun to see the results. I'm just happy to be back in the fabrication process as I've waited a few months on the sponsorship to come through.
JhnRx7 mentions using one of the internally waste-gated units for his 2 rotor. Thought about this for the 3 rotor but the turbo experts (Elliot from Turblown and my guy at Kilo) recommended against it due to the large flow of exhaust air. Should be a great solution for the 2 rotor guys though as there is no need to have external waste gates. Pretty cool design which can be activated by an ECU.
Finally, most certainly will monitor EGTs as I do this with my PLX setup. My EGTs with the Precision unit never got above 1,300 which is pretty cool for a rotary (AFRs also were not rich). I do have meth inj. though. I don't have a way to monitor back pressure but Kilo has discussed this with me and he is opening up the exhaust diameter a bit to try to help.

I know the feeling On one of the projects I am working on I ran across a company, EcoMotors, that has developed a turbo system incorporating a supercharger:
Mechatronik Division | EcoMotors
Pretty interesting stuff and I thought of you and your project.

In addition, the police will be out in force during the event. Not so much on the NC side, but certainly working the TN section which is the majority of the road. I work about 30 miles from The Tail and even on an average day, the Jackson County police have a regular large presence. Nice guys but they will ticket you so watch out on your way in to the event.
In short, have fun, do a little aggressive driving, don't cross the center lines, and you will be fine.
My goal this time is to get it right and then to be able to enjoy driving the car on the street and at track events. I've now done about 6 track events and have had a blast doing them. Certainly way better at managing a car on the track than my first time at VIR. Because most of my track time recently has been without my car (graciously got to use an FD from a buddy and my father in law's BMW Z4) I'm really excited to get the car back on the track to learn how to drive it. My goal isn't to be the fastest, it's to have an intimate understanding of the handling and driving characteristics of the car. At the last few track events, I've been able to "feel" the weight and load shift on the car and that is pretty cool.
A few points of clarification. DJseven mentioned $150K spent on the build and another member posted up $200K. Both of these are not correct but it is true the build is in the six figures. Should never have cost that much for the conversion and I've consistently estimated the engine swap should be around $30K with the full conversion (paint, wheels, suspension, exhaust, etc.) running about $50-60K. If you do it yourself, it will be a lot less. Djseven was correct in that I have driven the car a little more than 10,000 miles in the last 4 years or so. Certainly planning on changing that.
The "fails" in the build are both financially and emotionally painful and I hope by posting up the info both bad and good it helps other members better plan for their builds. I had started a "reflections" thread where I listed my recommended "dos and don'ts" a while ago and will probably get back to that as the intent was to help others avoid the mistakes I made. Just been way too busy with other projects (that make money ) and with life in general and frankly the forum for me personally hasn't been much fun.
Anyway, will post up more as progress occurs. Have a good one everyone.

Going to sound like the old guy now - don't do this at DGRR. Save it for the track. US 129 (Tail of the Dragon) is a public road and a pretty dangerous one at that. Many a person has lost control and ended up with bad results. As I recall, an RX8 guy went over the edge last year and was lucky to have no damage done. His car had to be pulled off the side of the mountain.
