With access to the the top of the engine already available, you should be able to drain the tank easily enough by pulling a line there - or at the tank inspection cover if you were concerned. Late cars didn't even have a drain plug for the tank.

How were the injectors delivered to you? Here they typically come in heat sealed bags, I think a lot cleaning fluids are water based now, but even so, unless the solution was pretty funky, hard to imagine them deteriorating in that space of time.

Bet that gas was a hell of a lot older than 6 months or had water, etc. in it.

I filled up at the local Chevron where I have been filling up for 40 years. It was a full tank the night before I took the car into the shop. We figure there was enough good gas to get it to the shop in the morning and have some work done, including a test drive. But when I picked the car up the evening, it started beautifully then died during warm up. Took three days to get it started again.

I reported to the gas station manager, but was too busy to follow up for their response or to find a place to get the fuel tested.

The FD gas tank as a drain plug on the bottom (I think Australia got a different, larger, tank.)

Chevron 94 was popular with local rotorheads due to the higher octane and no ethanol.

However, the government had recently mandated 10% ethanol.

Maybe Chevron screwed up the blending?

The gas we drained had little gasoline smell to it at all.

Bad gas

Back in the '80's I had a bad gas incident with my '74 carbureted G30 Van tow vehicle which requires premium. We were very low on gas coming home from a race in GA, so to keep from running out we stopped at a remote, rundown-looking, station in the VA mountains and filled the aftermarket 2nd tank with their "premium." After a few miles the van quit running. I immediately suspected bad gas. There was a small amount of good gas left in the OE tank, so we switched to that and got it running again. I drained some of the 2nd tank, which has a drain opening, and got about a gallon of water out. We ASAP filled the OE tank with gas that was OK. We had to keep switching back and forth between the 2 tanks over the next 100 miles or so to keep the engine running and get rid of the remaining water and contaminated gas.

When we got home, I immediately changed the inline fuel filters. Luckily, there were no long-lasting effects of the cruddy gas.

Ok guys, great news.

she finally runs today after so many months. Just took her to get gas and back (half a tank of fresh half a tank of bad old gas). I’m keeping her out of boost until I empty this entire tank.

So what ended up being the issue? Clogged fuel injectors was it. I had to send them back and when I got them back and plopped them in, fired right up. Hope this thread can help someone like me someday as it was a pretty extensive diagnoses. Thank you everyone

I use a something called a "Gas Tapper" after every winter to transfer my old fuel to my daily driver and fill it back up with new fresh fuel. This way, I don't have to run through a whole tank just to empty out old gas.

Or was this just a JDM thing? (Hint: It's a drain plug.)

Nope, the USDM FDs got fuel tank drain plugs too.
