I really am surprised at the bidding for this car. (With the caveat that a bid does not equal to a sale on eBay - many eBay car sales fall through because the winning bidder does not come through with the funds.)

I can't see a specialist FD shop buying it because they did not build it so I am not sure what the point would be. I can't see a race team buying it because, again, they did not build it - and what series would it race in? And I can't see even a wealthy enthusiast buying it because it is not really drivable on the street.

It's essentially a *****-to-the-wall, this-one-goes-to-11 fever dream. Nice to see it being done - but what would you do with this car after buying it?

Could be purchased & used by a content creator (youtube). Chasing clicks seems to be about the best thing this car is suited for (I truly mean no offense by that comment).

I am preparing to relocate to a remote location (think multiple ferry crossings and/or long gravel roads). This FD is completely unsuitable for that lifestyle.

If you know anyone that’s interested in the car send them my direction!

Almost none of the BAT FD's have a 99spec exterior conversions and the ones that do are swaps.
What do you armchair auctioneers think? Does it help or hurt the value? Does it count as "stock"?

Switching to a 99 front and 99 tails is a very common OEM "Plus" upgrade. So common the price of those parts has shot up.

Probably an enhancement for anything except an FD you definitely want to keep original, like an ultra low miles r2 or similar.

I thought this one would fly under the radar however it sold for $31,500 + 10%-15% buyer fee. The company auctioning it mentioned the car had hail damage on the roof and hood.

Damn. This must have been a hard choice. Selling a car that was such an epic build. Good luck with the sell.

In truth, any OEM parts are now going for a pretty penny. You're correct though.. Almost all the FD's I see around have the 99 spec bumper. In truth, I'd be running that bumper as well.. however, I really hate the fact it breaks the cars symmetry on the side profile. For the NA market, our side markers are illuminated. Makes the car complete when you're driving at nite. Unlike running the 99 spec bumper. You lose those corner lights. If you elect to run a side light, you have the side indicator on the fender which requires you to make a hole in your fender. On top of that, the side indicator is literally the indicator light when you want to turn. So running it at nite is a no go. Youre stuck with the car looking incomplete at nite.. lol
The 99 spec rears aren't really even 99 specific since they ran those tails as of 96 for their RZ version. They just became the next step up when they did decide to do a final update on the 99 spec cars. :-)

I'll stick with my original bumper but I did go with the 99spec front spoiler. It completes the look..

BC Little lip on bib bumper.

I am getting a new front bumper and rebar as some a-hole in a S15 inexplicably turned cross-wise in front of me on a straight.

While waiting for the bodyshop, I have installed an original base lip (not perfect alignment btw).

I sort of like the lip-less look. Also at 140 kmph of the freeway, the car seems actually more stable. Perhaps less buffeting than the big lip?

I needed a daytime running light solution for Canadian regulations. I found the S8 rebar has a nice open spot to mount S6 fogs, which I use as DRL.

I am continually wondering what cars of my childhood influence my love of the FD. Bugeye sprite came to mind last night.

That's odd.. I never had an issue with my front end. If anything the car feels alot more planted at elevated speeds. I wouldn't want to run without a front spoiler. I only ran with the stock lip the first few months I got the car? I literally picked up the car just before winter in 98 and during the winter months, I ordered up a 99 spec spoiler. She's had her spoiler for 23yrs now.. lol

The classic front engine rear drive designs of the Jag E type or even the Ferrari 250 GTO come to mind whenever I saw the FD.

Was 99 more than 23 years ago? Almost ready for collector plates?

I was discussing global warming with Angela Merkel in the same dream, so who knows. I had a great solution, but I cant remember what is was.

My suspension rebuild might have helped with the feeling of stability at speed.

BTW local kid picked up a '93 SSM LHD for C$38,000 here recently. 150,000km unit long term owner.

Another Kid sold his 99 RHD with twice rebuilt motor and maybe 360 hp of mods for C$34,000 from $38,000 asking. A very nice looking car with some top end period body kit (read: mazdaspeed).

(Kid = Adult less than 30)

Porsche and some other companies have been working on synthetic gas and I hope it will provide a future for the few of us who would like to keep driving our ICE-mobiles.

They actually revised that whole collector plate thing. I guess they found some people were using it as a loop hole for certain things?? Right now I think there's a few restrictions if you plan to run those type of plates. I think I'll be leaving my normal random plate for the foreseeable future.

Yep, FD's are up there now. They have nowhere else to go but up. Especially those that haven't been molested entirely.

(completely agree with you regarding the Kid equation.. lol )

I don't think we'll have a problem running our cars. At least not while we're alive. Fuel isn't going away at least for another 3-4 decades. I'll be very much gone from this Earth before it starts to become an issue. After I'm gone, the museum I'm leaving the car too can keep up with the maintenance..

Angela Merkel is at the Polish border.

The Polish customs officer asks her some questions.

-Name?

-Angela Merkel.

-
Nationality?

-European Union.

-Hmm, okay. Place of residence?

-Munich, Germany.

-Occupation?

-Oh, no, no. I'm just visiting.
