in the pan then your mixing too hard.
when you put the paint down, your pressing too hard, you should only be using the weight of the roller. If need be go back over the paint a min later with just the weight of the roller and pop all the bubbles.

It was bubbling when i was rolling... i did use a little more weight than the roller, haha

haaahahha, YES SIR... you are correct. i have one coat on the hood and it's already looking bad ***. we're building a home made paint booth tonite and i will be spraying the entire car finally before the weekend i hope. the only thing i don't like about spraying this paint, or any paint for that matter, is trash eaaasily gets in the mix while it's settling. but that's really not that big of an issue. i spent a good while practicing the technique with this type of paint on my shell and you reaaaaally gotta get the mix right.
not enough mineral spirits and it will spit and not go on glossy at all... too much spirits and it will settle too much and dry flat looking. i use a syphon feed gun and have it set to spray wide with a high paint/air ratio setting. this is the first time i have ever painted a car..... EVER and i'm amazed. this paint is very easy to work with and the results are stellar

i'll keep posting pics as more is done!
one coat, no wet sanding yet

4 coats, no wet sanding yet
Campell Housing (sp?) syphon feed from good ol' wally world! hahaha
they have a few different kinds and this one is normally 70.00 but was on sale for 35! so i scooped that **** up in a heart beat. definitely not the best but i'm not having any issues with it. i'll take a pic of the gun to show you all the different adjustment features it has... which is pretty key to the success of this paint going on so well.
update: i built my paint booth and will be sanding the entire car down, filling the holes where the badges were, and masking everything off today.... then maybe even getting a nice coat on the whole car. ahhhhh i can't wait.
at night i can see the hood glistening from sooooo far away ahahaha it's awesome!

well, i'm pickin up some black to do a few pieces of a friends car, then i'm painting my buddies accord with the royal blue so i'll post pics of those colours. should go on similar to the black.
hahaha, yea we'll see. just painting some cars of people i know. i dunno if i would want to do this for a living. your average person gets angry with maaco's 2.50 paint because no matter what they pay they expect it to be perfect. plus i refuse to do any bodywork hahahaha. sand, prime, and spray that's all i will do
but hell it'll look gooooooood WOOWOOOO!

i think the problem that i have so far is that my luster is good, but the final product looks like it has dimples....when applying the paint, it gets bubbley but all the bubbles pop. after which, the spots settle but not completely flat.
the question: when i roll the paint on i eliminated the roller marks but how to eliminate the bubbles....im only rolling with the weight of the roller. am i just not using enough paint? or am i not thinning it enough? becuase im using a **** load of spirits

The bubbles popping and not filling in is called solvent pop. It leaves holes called pinholes. Solvent pop is caused by a couple of different things:
1. Paint applied in too high temperature for the rating of the reducer. In this case, the mineral spirits. The solvent vaporizes too fast and makes a bubble of (solvent)
gas that pops through the paint surface.
2. Paint applied too heavy. This causes the solvent to have to migrate too far through the thickly applied paint. The solvent forms bubbles and pops out of the paint leaving pinholes. This type is made worse by warm weather.
3. Paint applied in too high temp and the surface dries too fast trapping the solvent in the paint profile.
4. Too high ratio of reducer used (mineral spririts)
The solution is to use a higher temperature reducer. If you are using professional paints, you can chood a reducer rated for higher temps. For example you can choose 70-85* range or 85-95* or 95* + rated reducer.
If you are not using pro paints, you have just discovered one of the disadvantages of spending so little on paint. You don't have the choices that the pros have.
What can you do? Look on the mineral spirits can. If the store has several different brands or types choose the one with the lowest Vapor Pressure rating. This will be the equivelant to a higher temp rated reducer. How much it will help no one knows, but it may help some.
You can also paint in lower temp conditions. Early in the morning is best. Late in the evening is ok, but not as good as early.
I wouldn't paint anything with this method if it is over 75*. A great deal of the method depends on the paint self leveling. If you are getting solvent pop leaving pinholes, then you are obviously not getting the self levelling effect. Cooler temps will probably solve the problem.
well, i'm feeling spunky lately doing all this sanding and prepping... so i picked up a civic front bumper and am going to give it a shot and see how she looks with it. i remember autopaul (on this site, search civic bumper in 1st gen section) doing it and it looked bad ***. i figure, why not a better time than now? hahahaha, if it's too much of a pain i won't bother.
regardless, the whole car is almost completely sanded now. tonite i have to remove the door handles, rear tail lights, rear bumpUs, and antenna. after that i'll be bondo'ing (sp?) the holes where the emblems used to be and shaving the antenna
i'll have some progress pics tonite.... just incase anyone cares and is keeping up.
edit: how is that hunter green car coming along?!?!?!??

i am getting alot of solvent pop with my friend's 240... he already bought the best high density roller in the store,
we tried the 100% to 20% paint to mineral spirits combo
we tried adding more mineral spirits
the paint i am using is rustoleum oil-enamel
the moparts site says to use arcrylic, but i see someone used oil... so which one is it?
i've tried going over the paint with the weight of the roller but it still have A LOT of bubbles...

crap, haven't posted pics yet cause i've had a good/bad weekend. good = friends over, beer, pizza, racing, etc.... bad = as soon as i go to paint the car it fuggin rains and gets way too humid out. BUUUUT, she's all taped up and everything just waiting for the 1st coat to go on, so the second it clears up today (supposed to rain again) then i'm gonna shoot it. WOOWOOOOOO!!!!
update: now at 2 coats, no sanding yet. tonite or tomorrow morning i'll sand it down with 1000 grit and lay on 2 more coats and that should do it
i'm a little mad at myself for sanding it down sooo much before painting but it's my first paint job on a car ever so i'm still learning.
