replaced the distributor cap and rotor with new parts from Atkins. The cap is exactly like stock, but the rotor is slightly different. The brass contact patches aren't quite as wide (see pics) but it runs smoother above 5k now. I made few changes to fuel and spark today but drove it after each step, and the rotor def made a difference.
Replaced the thermostat housing / choke temp sendor with a plug. I haven't used the factory choke **** in a while and finally got that wire/plug out of the way.
Had to cut into th metal of the door for rh extended style roll cage side bars that will extend into the door cavity! Has been raining now step except today!
Got my Edelbrock back on and got the car running. It's been over a week, and now it's running the best since I bought it. Not as good as new, but better than my first 5 months with it.

@RRacerX, I like the idea of the "wider" roll cage. But wow, I have a hard enough time getting in my car without a cage, I don't know how you racers do it.
nice work. Looks like a bought one. Run us through the process? Before pic?
I don't know if I have a before picture, but I completely dis assembled the steering wheel, used a 2" pneumatic angle grinder with a medium scotch brite pad to remove the paint and rust. I did need to use sandpaper to cut in around the base of the spokes. The key to get a good machined look is to go up and down the spokes. Do not be erratic. Be a robot. Wash the steering wheel. I coated the bare metal with a direct to metal satin clear coat.

Thomas, can you give some more info about the Rotary Aviation Adapter you mention. Is this something you're adjusting and have something to do with oil smoke cloud on 1-2 shift?
I was wondering about the cloud too. I made some fuel and ignition changes yesterday and now accelerating WOT I get a smoke cloud shifting from 3rd to 4th, but no where else. Never did that before.
How old is oil in your engine and what weight is it? Same oil in engine when exhaust overheated? Engine got very hot too and may have broke down the oil thinning it making it easier to get past oil control seals.
Cheap start to repairing the smoking would be to change oil/filter and see if that helps.
Not super exciting but I pulled apart the dash again just so I could add a small piece of translucent red vinyl to the AFR gauge. It was white, now it's a much closer hue to the rest of the dash. Currently showing err status because I was also recalibrating the sensors.
Yes, getting in and out of the racecar is not a easy task and sometimes without Grace but an act of contorsion and much cursing! At my age(over 50), I am thankful for having taken some yoga classes to aid in flexibility but every racer fears that they will have to exit the car in less than 20 seconds when it is on fire so I think the adreanalin boosts your exit speed and so what if you hit your head, that's what helmets are for! But coming from a motorcycle racing background, roll cages are a wonderful discomfort!
[/ QUOTE]
Rx7 first generation bodyshell was OEM built with roll gage integrated. 3mm sheet metal in the roof section. Why you need a second roll gage like a prison?😉
All wheel to wheel format racing rules requires a roll cage, even Touring cars in Europe and certainly Rally race cars as the speeds reached in racing and on racetracks are much greater than what can be reached regularly on most public roadways. In my case I am way beyond the average size of a racer and at 6' 3" with a long torso ,I must cut out the original Autopower roll cage and the sheet metal on the inside of the roof ceiling to not have my head hit the roll cage and make sure my helmet is below the top of the roll cage! so new roll cage is going in as the floor pan has already been dropped 2+" causing me to have to move the exhaust and brake lines and leaving the car with 3" of ground clearance! Love the tall and wide Racetech seat BTW!
