I actually bought it thinking it was a nissan 240 and when I got home, it was too late to get my money back. lol jk.

My buddy was into them and he took me along with him, to go help some dude install a rotary into an FC. I knew nothing about them and hadn't even heard about them. Seeing all these guys come over and help out this one dude blew my mind. We actually got the engine installed that day too. I remember Guitar Junkie being there (I didnt know about his reputation at the time).

So I went home and started checking them out online and noticed how fairly cheap they were. I was driving a mustang 5.0 V8 at the time and got my brain thinking. Hmmm... I wonder if I can put a mustang V8 into one?

So I bought an FB and swapped in a 5.0 over the course of a year. Never Ran right and I needed the space, so I sold it and immediately Bought an FC wanting to do an LT1 5.7L Swap. Than my buddy Dan convinced me to save up a little more and go LS1. Thank goodness I did.

Now I got my 6.0L V8 FC and the rest is History.

But yeah, that one day has seriously altered the course of my life. Funny how things can inspire you. I went not knowing what a rotary or Rx7 is, now I have a booth for the last two years at Seven Stock. Talk about Butterfly effect.

Cant wait to see you guys tomorrow!!

^^ Yup, IMO they really are beautiful.

Ever since I was in high school when the car came out.. I must have been a freshman or sophmore in high school, was never into cars or had car friends. But I remember seeing one in a parking lot and was instantly attracted to it. Kinda funny, it got stuck in my head, I started seeing them more and more and got kinda obsessed with it. I told myself I would have one one day but it took over 10 years from that time to have enough money to pick up a used one.

Looks aside, it was small and light and known for handling; all characteristics I think are part of what makes a great sports car. And you don't see many of them on the road, especially these days. Every time I see one I try to talk to the driver, give him props. I saw one a few days ago over by my place I was trying to chase him down just so I could give him a thumbs up lol.

I loved the motor for its novelty and uniqueness, that's about it single turbo 20B or N/A 20B would be much better in the FDs IMO. Otherwise v8 ftw

Also: my mom used to have a 1st gen. I bought it off her years ago, was my 2nd car ever (1st car was a toyota tercel, talk about a shitbox). Body was all f'd up, paint trashed, but it ran great. I actually slept in that car for a few months when I didn't have a place to live at the time. I loved that car, it was also very light and handled pretty damn well. Needed more motor, but it was a great car. I beat the crap out of that thing, it never gave me any problems aside from trying to smog it! I would love to have another clean one to use for a DD, they are so easy to drive and slow enough that you keep yourself out of trouble. One day...

Was the first thought that came to my mind when I read that guy's post. haha

And to the poster above me, the FD3S is one of the sexiest looking cars ever made. Oh how I would love to have one rocking a built Ls7 that revved to 8k.

I can't think of swapping the engine just yet...
I'm too interested in dual charging! Sounds like a win for the 13b, I was thinking about it and then some1 posted that they already had a super charger ready... All I'm saying is I feel the devil magic triangles still have potential...

I wanted a 3rd gen. Dad saw a "rx7" for sale on the street, bought it and saw it was a 1st generation. I had a stoke of genius To make the car turbo and went to a shop where i always saw rx7's and VW bugs outside. Coincidentally TurboDave drove by, he gave me a ride in his turbo FB where we spun the car to avoid a car crash and it was on with my rotary enthusiasm ever since.

Thanks to big Dave and the homies.
Damn i miss my 1st gen turbo.

The car that started it all (for me) Daves turbo FB

My turbo SA

The two bro's

This is what happens when you let Turbo Dave build your car

i first drove an '88 model RX7 Turbo II back around 1993. i was about 18 and it came into the dealership as a trade in used car, i got lucky enough to get it for the used vehicle inspection.

even in the era when FDs were just coming to market i found it to be one of the funnest cars i had ever driven and remembered it and the unique engine. i eventually bought an '87 TII about 8 years later with a blown engine. i learned the car and engine from the inside out, began working on other people's 7's as a side hobby, got enough customers to open my own shop and here we are today with about 200 motors under my belt and plenty of adaptations to ensure that the engine survive beyond factory support.

unfortunately i'm not a very good salesman and too good hearted to really make this into a large big name shop. i also do it all on my own without any assistance(less chance for screwups, i can only blame myself).

These are some really good reads. This is why I stick to my car... because of everybody's stories and people throwing good shows together like SS. Luck and a guiding hand from really important people in my life are what had me buy this car. I was a retard like too many who refuse to learn about their cars but you can't own a rotary and not end up learning anything and all that you can about it. I didn't even know how to drive stick at the time but I like to think that now I heel and toe like a pro

Buying my rx7 was a really important facet to my life. Like many people getting out of school, I still didn't know what the hell to do with my life. A car like this gave me a focus and real living interest to pursue. I finally knew that the motorsport industry is where I wanted to be. Involved one way or another in the pursuit of more speed is something that makes me happy. Just taking my time though, being thankful to be employed and just waiting now for an opening somewhere in the direction that I'm looking for.

I drive my FC and every time there's another one on the road (which isn't often), someone waves a hi or says a quick line of vehicle admiration. I can count every moment this has happened. It's the community for this car that makes it excellent on top of an already unique engine. That said, thanks to everyone.

First RX: 94 FD, the looks first and foremost but also the reputation of the FD as an import supercar. (Dual a-arms, etc).

Second RX: 90 FC, the ability to do a V8 swap and make it into a supercar I could flog.

I never really beat on the FD because it was just a little too pretty to risk like that and I was frankly a bit scared of popping a motor. I think I'm about the only guy who intentionally jumped from FD back to FC. That said, Rx7's are known for having solid chassis, so when I discoverd that all also Rx7's have larger than normal transmission tunnels (due to the e-shaft being in the middle of the engine vs. crankshafts being down low) it was game on for a swap, albeit with a slightly older chassis.

The rotary motor was definitely unique, but I never viewed that uniqueness as an upside when combined wth their poor reputation for reliability, terrible gas mileage, and need to wind them out to see any torque. FWIW I had never owned a v8 when I set out to do my swap, I just wanted to try it and see. To be perfectly honest I don't mind the rotary and I have friends who have been both fast and reliable using them, but I don't really see a point to them either.

I regularly tell folks my motor makes 4 times the displacement, 3 times the HP, and my mileage went up. My car is a daily driver. To make the same power in a 13b rotary requires 110 octane and that has no place on a street car.

or water from your local walgreens/supermarket.

stock for stock? no comparison, V8 hands down. modified and simplified? yes, there is a comparison still to be made although i would say you still would beat even the best tuned 13B for fuel mileage by a few mpg(only a few). course i'm assuming we're comparing a 20 year old motor to less than 10 year old V8 tech, if you compare a TPI V8 motor from the same era they are heavier, make average power and less mileage, more comparable stock vs stock.

now if i only had a renesis from the last 10 years equivalent to chop up and modify who knows, might get even better results with a nice single turbo, engine simplification, water injection or E85 and decent management system.

problem is most people do not have the knowledge to build and setup these cars properly with a rotary engine, or buy them hoping the 20 year old engine will last a few more years.

In other news, I absolutely LOVE the Mazda 5 we just bought. Where else can you find a "mini" mini-van that comes with a 6 speed and is fun to drive? (OK Europe doesn't count) I don't need a power lifting trunk hatch or automatic sliding rear doors. I do need the ability to haul a family of four plus gear for a week or two at the in-laws and/or six folks with said in-laws in the back.

My point is that I approve strongly of Mazda's effort to simplify and I hope they get back into the serious sports car game with a model that's stripped down enough that the enthusiasts can afford them. If they made a 7/8 scale 'vette competitor that looked compelling that would be a DRAW (an 8/7th scale lotus competitor would work too. ). Let's face it--Evos,WRXs, even the new GT-Rs--are good looking cars but I'd never call one sexy. Not in the way the FD is sexy or an Astin Martin is.

I really hope Mazda can recapture that.

BTW I dig the fact these cars come with STORIES no mater what exactly it was that brought you in. Being a relatively new dad (almost 2 year old, another on the way) this was my favorite pic of the thread by far. Good stuff.

First off, I love my Wankel. It revived my sports car bone. I didn't choose this car. My wife was handicapped in a car accident, F-150 vs. her Camry. She lost. She can't ride motorcycles anymore so i sold all but one of my bikes. A friend wanted a bike for his son so i traded my last one. A 7 yo. Triumph Thruxton with 20k on the clock for a 27 yo. RX-7 GSL-SE with 115. That's what his neighbor had. He payed for the car, his son got the bike and i got the Mazda.

I have owned a "75" Triumph Spitfire 1500 for 14yrs. now and i thought this would be much the same. That first test blast opened my eyes to the wonder of the rotary. So much so that I'm tempted to dump one into my spit. But that's another thread

If i had known how much fun these are to drive, I would have owned one years ago. Better late than never. I foresee owning a rotary for the rest of my life. Just what i needed, another addiction.LOL

I had a FC from 87 to 96 and I loved that car it was so much fun to drive. I had to give it up finally but I wanted to get another sometime down the road.
Then this year a friends son picked up a 93 FD and gave me a ride and the bug bit me again. So I started looking and came across a 94 FD R2 in great shape annd low mileage. And now it sits in my garage looking all pretty. It'a just as much fun to drive as my FC and the FD gets a lot of looks.

I dont have an RX-7 yet, but the reason i love the car is because of Initial D. Love at first sight, i guess. Now i need a cheap, manual, rwd car and can't think of anything better for a nice project than a FC.
