Well, the tranny on the vert went out the other day. Decided to do it while I was on my way to work..Seems to be stuck in gear. Only way it will move forward is if the clutch is pushed in...even if the shifter is in neutral.

I had the car towed over to Happy Jap's in Cary. They checked it out and it seems that the cheapest fix is to replace the transmission. It's got 126k miles on the original motor, tranny and clutch. It's always been a strong running car but this still came as a surprise.

Anyway, my question is (and yes, I've tried searching) , should I go ahead and try replacing with a T2 tranny now with the thought that when the engine goes I'll either rebuild the NA with a streetport or do a T2 motor swap? Or is this even an option since I've still got the NA motor in place ?... Again I'm searching for a definitive answer and can't seem to come up with one.

Thanks !

If you install a TII tranny, you will also need the TII driveshaft and differential. The only other option there is to have a custom driveshaft made.

Thanks Impulsive...that makes sense . I saw something on mazdatrix .com that seemed to indicate the clutch housing was slightly bigger but it could be done. Either way, I'm looking for a used 5spd in the local area.

Youll also need a T-II flywheel, clutch and axles along with the things impulsive mentioned.

You're coming?? YAY! And they have a Supra, a 240SX, and an FD? HELL YEAH they can come, too!

Must... not... hump... cars... ALL three of those are going to be in my driveway someday... omg. This will be good practice. LOL.

Anyway, David... PM Johny, but I'm pretty sure there will be enough couches/area for cots and blow-up mattresses to set up a place to sleep.

It will be MUCH easier if it's JUST a tranny problem, to just (literally) slap a new tranny in there.

Unless the vert is freakishly different from the coupe, it's a very simple project that can be done in one day. ...And you can put your car on blocks and do it yourself. If you can benchpress the tranny, you'll do fine. It really is just that simple. Just as long as you pay attention to how things came apart, and how things were lined up, then you'll be fine.

Can't say I know how to do an automatic (not that I'd care), but the manual tranny is cake.

previous owner must not have taken care of your tranny man. I've got 152k on my original tranny, I beat the **** out of it (drag race, double clutch 1st at 25mph etc), and it still runs fine. Oh well. On your next tranny put some really good gear oil in there, Most people recommend Redline MT-90. That's what I run. It's expensive, but it does a good job.

You'll have a lot harder time finding a T2 tranny in good shape. They tend to be ragged out. PM 13b4me . He's out near jacksonville but he has a ton of parts as well.

You're close enuff to come up for a meet this Saturday!!! We have people come up from the east all the time to the meets. Can't think of anyone in Goldsboro right off hand. Lot of people come up from the Fort Brag area all the time, even Jacksonville and Havelock.

personally everyone here has extra parts that they want to get rid of, i recommend the for sale area. eBay has been a let down as far as selling used RX7 parts go

just my .02

Hey I'm in Goldsboro...I have Ti Gray 8, did i leave a RRDI card in your window? I've been dropping cards off left and right. I didn't realize there were so many rotaries running around G-boro.

anyone here have a thermostat housing that has the little fitting for that extra temperature sensor thing? The one that's supposed to activate that auxilary cooling fan? I want to put an aftermarket temp sending unit in there, but my car doesn't have an auxilary fan.

Get up with Nic and his Tigray RX8. He and his wife come up to Raleigh and make just about every Drive-In. From his last post he has a line on a bunch or rotaries in the Goldsboro area. He works over at See More Johnson AFB, never have understood the name of that airbase.
