Heh, we will see how the two 1st gens I drove this past weekend get along after me driving them. I drove an ITA racecar with street tires and an 85 13B carburated 1st gen with RB exhaust and some nice suspension.

Thanks to Scott and Ian.

Ray, I was just helping you give your car a little more love than just down the 85 racetrack daily .

Stu better bring you back some of those 12A cores he bought off of you. I'm sure he would give you a good deal, probably only mark them up 50% from cost

Sorry to hear your cars kaput. Like Mike said maybe its just a stuck seal. Mine does that if it sits too long. You can tell it sounds real lumpy when it starts because its basically running on one rotor.

Holly my car loves you too but you have to admit you play kind of rough. I realize some of those heavy down shifts were necessary since the brakes weren't working, but when you start laying rubber both accelerating and decelerating, it's got to knock those seals back and forth a few times. But hey, it was a lot of fun, I'd do it all over again.

Mike I already soaked it in sea foam overnight but that didn't help. I'll check the compression with Crit's ghetto compression tester (also Jamie has a poor man's method that might work which he suggested on my post about the problem in the tech section). If the compression really is bad I'll repeat the sea foam treatment with more sea foam and longer soaks to see if I can unstick the seal.

But I'm afraid the news is probably bad, for two reasons: 1st, about a month ago, I stopped putting 8 oz of MMO in every tank of gas, as I have been doing for the last seven years of trouble free 12A commuting. Second, since Mike fixed my carb the White One has been running so well I've been driving like Holly all the time.

Moral of the story: Less lube + hot rodding = wrecked apex seal.

Here's the movie:

http://s259.photobucket.com/albums/h...=engmov004.flv

I was looking for an excuse to get the silver one on the road anyway. And to either put a mild street port or 13B in the White One. With FB's, all is good.

May meeting right around the corner!

Stuck seal...when carbon deposits build up to a point where it jams the spring action of the apex seal and keeps it from sealing against the housing properly.

Ray, you didn't want me to drive it like a girl did you? Why did you stop adding the lube after so many years?

Looks like your getting rid of any mosquitos in your area for the year.

Yeah I actually took those pictures after most of the smoke had cleared. We'll see if it helps the "stuck seal" - I poured about a half a can of Sea Foam into the carb and its out there sitting now.

Holly, keep working on that post count, I see you just went over 1,200 posts! And I think you're driving is great, although I'm not sure how you would categorize it according to sex.

I stopped adding the MMO because I'm not a superstitious person, I didn't need the "extra" expense and bother and because Mike doesn't put it in his car and he has over 250,000 miles on his 12A. That's the last time I listen to Mike.

Tokico Illuminas

HeyGuys/Gals,

Any 1st gen people looking for some new shocks/struts? Billy has a great price on a set:

https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.php?p=8092875

If someone wants just the rears, I'll go in on those with you as I could use the fronts.

Ray: that is one heck of a smoke screen that you got going there! Let's hope for the best. Many of these NA engines run so good for so long that the apex seals tend to wear well below minimum spec until they crack, break, or just fall out. I had this happen on the rear rotor on my old SA. It could idle and start okay, but would run rough and had NO power. I could drive it, but it would only do about 55MPH at WOT and probably took about 2 or 3 minutes to get up to that speed. One apex broke and took out the other 2, so the rear rotor had 0 compression.

Kent

Oh... I knew this was coming.

Holly, if the truth be known the great apex seal caper cannot be attributed to your "spirited driving". I have to take the blame for this mess. I did tell Ray that I don't premix with MMO, but I have been adding a bottle of Sea Foam to my gas at every oil change for th past year or so.

I am probably on borrowed time with my 12A. Just crossed 251k. I know it is only a matter of time until I will have to deal with blown apex seal.

Ray, I am serious about coming by to help. Let me know when you will be working on the car (which ever one is going to be the driver) and I will try to make time to help.

That looks pretty cool. Like a vintage version of this one:

I need to finish building mine. If I remember correctly, I'm like 5 minutes from being done but needed glue.

Not running Donny. She's a sittin' and a soakin' right now, Crit is loaning me his compression tester, I will know this evening if it's fatal or just a mystery.

Mike thanks for the offer! Let me find out where I'm at, if there's work to be done it would be great to get your assistance and expertise.

Rotorious, yeah what happened to you? Weren't you supposed to be at that last meeting with that turbofied GSL?

i got 2 of those models. stuck apex seal=no compression. normally when they get stuck, it's compressed and with high mileage, the spring is too weak to push it back out. therefore, u get little to no compression and difficulties in starting.

Hey Kent, How's it going? You getting your butt down here one of these days or what?

Crit's homemade compression tester says this truly is the sound of an apex seal gone bad:

http://s259.photobucket.com/albums/h...=engmov004.flv

The front rotor in the White One has a bad apex seal - kind of like needing a brake job only a little more work.

So what do you guys think, stock 12A, mild street port 12A, 13B, renessis or small block V8?

In the mean time, expect to be seeing the Silver One out there on I85 in the near future.

Hey, Ray. Doing good, thanks. I'll make it down there one of these days. Have a lot on my plate right now and need to find some time to get the 7 into shape for that drive. Sorry to hear about your engine. I know how you love the 12A, so either a stock 12A or a mild SP would be nice.

Silver's my favorite color Ray. Too bad about the seal, I wish mine would blow, really. I want to put a 13B SP in it as a replacement. Just waiting until that time comes.

I just turn 100k on it so I guess I have what 50 or 150k to go. Damn, I'll be dead before I rack up that kind of mileage.

Kent was down here a few weeks ago. If he comes down to GA I'll guide in from here.

245,910. That's about what my odometer reads now. And I drove about 5K without a speedometer.

12A street port Ray. Definitely not your last choice.

Tim I will drive your car for you. Seems like I have lots of experience driving 1st gens lately. You started it Ray. I drove 3 different 1st gens in 3 weekends.

Mike, I know enough about rotaries to know that by revving the engine you are not going to hurt it. They like high revs. A good high revving running day and it is like getting your teeth clean at the dentist. Much smoother after that. I think Ray was taking it too easy after my drive in his.
