Tim, don't let Ray talk you into the little black oil filters. I'm with you on the PureOne. As with some other things, size does matter when it comes to oil filters.

I am back from my trip to the SC shore. I got 23.9 mpg on an all highway leg of the trip. Not bad for me.

I still have not completely resolved the idle issue. Still have a bit of miss and a stumble coming off of idle, but the car runs great above idle. I'm planning to play with it some this weekend. I am thinking about changing the cap and rotor and checking the plugs. Anyone want to offer some advise?

I was blaming it on the full moon but then I realized today this peculiar behavior started around the time I stopped by your house last week and you hooked up that springy thing on my carb.

What's that thing do anyway? Is it the turbocharger?

Oh yeah Tim, you don't use the black Mazda filters because they work better (but they must 'cause they are OEM, right?). You use them 'cause they LOOK cooler. The blue ones look like you shop at WalMart.

All I can about filters Ray is read this. You can make your own decision. OEM doesn't always mean the best, it usually means adequate for the warranty period.

Besides its getting harder and more expensive to get the Mazda filters and the PureONE comes in a pretty blue color. I bet Cathy likes the blue color better than the black one :-)

BTW, its looking like I'll make it down there in the 4th. My calendar appears to be open that day.

I asked Cathy and she thinks the blue filters are OK, but she uses the black OEM filters in her MP5.

But you guys know I'm kidding about this, I'm no more serious about those classy black OEM oil filters being way better than the blue Walmart ones than I am about clutch fans being better than efans:



Besides, the blue ones aren't even close to the worst color, that belongs to Fram orange.

As for the oil cooler replacement.

Yes, the rings are 20mm in dial. and 2mm thick. Can find some at the hardware store. Our first oil cooler operation was not successful though. I had to go back and do it again as my old cooler was leaking as well as the seals. It’s a nasty little bugger to get to. I’ve got cut and gouges in my handsto show for it. You may find it faster to simply pay some big dude to beat you up. Then take it to a mechanic.

If your still stupid enough to try this yourself then keep reading.

Pressure wash your engine and let it run so that you can get under the cooler with a mirror and check to see weather the oil is coming from under the triangular base plate with the three 14mm bolts or from the cooler mounting base plate with the two 10mm bolts. Never, never, never loosen the 14mm bolts as this will most likely damage its seals. These three bolts hold the cooler layers together. If the cooler is leaking it will run around the base plate and down over the large rounded section at the rear where the oil line connects. The 10mm's with the mounting plate are beneath all of this. If the seals are leaking that is where it drips would occur. If you have a spare cooler you may just want to go ahead and use it.

I checked under the car when I got to work today and just a half hour ago and there were no drips. I’m still checking the oil whenever I stop, just to be sure.

 

Well well... I thought I'd check up on the club and see what ya'll all have been up to. I'll hopefully be able to make it to this next meet. As of now, my car's at a friends house just sitting there. My drivers-side CV Joint in the back's just about shot. This weekend, we're pulling that all apart and installing a "newer used one". So hopefully that'll fix my crazy rear end twitch. But enough about me

And speaking of those little model cars Ray, I almost bought a Series 5 Turbo model car off of ebay a week or 2 back. But I couldn't let myself pay almost $25 for one

 

Hopefully that blue one will be delivered on time for the meeting, I've been looking for one of those for years. I just missed a nice red one that went for $27 a couple of weeks ago, so I was real happy to get the blue one for half that. Plus shipping.

I saw Collin today, or someone that looks like Collin driving a red FC that looks like Collin's. Man that kid is fast on the headlight switch, he had them up and down before I could wave.

So Mike, you gotta tell me what that springy thing is you fixed on my car. FINALLY the White One is faster than your Gray Wonder, header and all!

Believe it Greg, it ain't gonna leak. Repairing your own bee hive. Priceless.

For one, my uncle was the PO and beat the crap out of the car. It's on it's second transmission (and soon the third), second driveshaft, second clutch, and second CRAPPY STOCK exhaust. And secondly, I got the car when I was 14, and I wasn't the greatest driver 3 years ago. But I guess my CV Joint had finally had enough. I think it did good to last 250 thousand miles .
