Old guys with 12As club meeting
So, again, the RX7's hate me. The 12A no longer runs at full power. It stalled on me trying to get on the highway, randomly just thunked and stopped. Then I finally got it running, with minimal power. Crit and Michael told me to check the ignition. I plan on taking out the spark plugs tomorrow, and checking for spark on all 4. It appears to be a spark issue, because I watched the Holley put gas into the chamber, and I had a guy follow me home, who said it smelled rich. So I figure it's spraying just fine, but it isn't sparking to ignite that gas that's being thrown in there....
I just might need some new spark plugs, maybe wires, or possibly coils or a igniter. I have no idea. I've got Crit's FSM, so I'll just run as many diagnostics as I can to check all of this...
Any ideas guys? Anyone wanna travel to help a Young Guy with a 12A? I'm out by Hamilton Mill in Buford. I'll cover lunch

Kevin I can stop by on my way home from work tomorrow for an hour or two, not sure exactly when but sometime in the early afternoon. No promises, remember I'm a biochemist not a car mechanic.
Somebody must know who this is:

From the looks of the sloping driveway it looks like that 2nd gen guy over in the Norcross area (Rotary Restorations?). Nice looking car, especially for you gray interior guys

And Ray, if you would, that would be awesome. Just call me when you're on the way. I'm right by Hamilton Mill off 85. 678-994-1545. Thanks

Bren isn't out to screw anybody, Kevin...
And yes, that GSL-SE and the TII he also has are amazingly flawless. I've seen them in person! I nearly nutted just looking at them...
No one wants an S4 front bumper, S5 radio surround or S5 coupe tails? Anyone? I need to pay for these!!!

Close. It's Bryn Park in Lilburn. I'd put his trustworthiness somewhere between Collin's and Kevin's opinion of him. It looks like a clean car, but I'd advise anyone shopping to look it over for themselves, and to do so very carefully.

Good times, good times.. Too bad I can't go back to those days where we had fun and didn't care because you were out of school and I had thousands in the bank. lol
I guess the fun had to end eventually.... Though we're doing pretty good, eh buddy? You're in school, I'm *finally* going to school, we've got our cars in order, we've done a lot of what we've planned to do by this point...
Now we just need to paint Smokey! But let's wait until spring or summer...and work on getting the gun set right lol
Start saving for paint, clear and supplies!
Well, I was fiddling with the 12A this morning, trying to get it to run, and during my testing, I decided to check compression via pulling plugs on each rotor to check for noise. Well, the front rotor has good sounds, but the rear rotor has no noise whatsoever.
Compression test failed. Rear rotor compression? Shot.
At least I think. I really really hope it's not, but I can't think of anything else. Ray, I left you a message. Call me when you get off work. If anyone has any ideas on how to further check compression, or to maybe figure out what I can do to fix it without tearing apart the motor, let me know.

I wonder if I should chop the 12A and 13B to make a carburated 13B? All I would need to do is get the correct manifold for the 13B engine right? I have everything else, since it's all on the 12A right?
And which coil is which? Is leading closer to the headlights or is that trailing?

"And which coil is which? Is leading closer to the headlights or is that trailing?"
It depends on who wired it last, but it looks like Ace had it hooked up right, front coil for trailing plugs, rear coil for leading and, as Mike points out, plugged to the center of the dizzy.

I like the 13B "upgrade" idea (upgrade in the Vista sense, of course). Lots easier to get parts (and more 12A parts for me!!)

Those were fun times... I've got so much **** I've got to do I just stop thinking about it. I'll get a better grip on it soon and we'll chill again. And I've been thinking about painting the FC- who not do the bodywork and prep work ourselves and just get it macco sprayed? We don't have enough room nor experience, and the idea of doing the whole car is crazy... That's my mindset for today
I know very little about 12A's right now, but if the shudder valve is sticking open, wouldn't that make the rear rotor seem dead with no compression? I remember before Ray and I tinkered with mine it was like that, then once the vacuum leaks were fixed along with disabling the shudder valve it ran great.

kevin or anyone else that doesnt know bren, like crit said, inspect very carefully when you look at something whether it's bren selling it or anyone else. i'm not one to slander anybody, but i have had a lot experience with some people and a blanket statement saying that he is completely straight up should not just be taken as the truth. BEWARE of sellers you don't know... period (until you know they are good). i've gotten screwed too many times to just let that one slide.
on another note, quad... if you do turn it into a 4 port 13b, we've got a 4 port manifold that's studded for a nikki if you're interested.

let me see if i understand this right, u have both a 12a and a 13b? if the 13b is 6 port u can't use it with the 12a as the "O" rings r in the intermediate housings instead of the rotor housings like the 12a.
Listen to Mr. Michael Quad, he knows whereof he speaks when it comes to carbed 13B's. His retrofitted sleeper FB with a 13B and holley is a rocket. Why don't you just transplant the 13B into the Red Monster and get some bigger jets for your Holley? I'll give you a call about tomorrow after dinner.
Brett, that's SHUTTER valve, not SHUDDER valve. It shutters air flow to the rear rotor, it doesn't shudder it. But great suggestion, that could cause Kevin the Quad's symptoms, but I'll bet Kevin the Ace already disabled it.
Concerning Bryn, I bought a set of light weight racing rims from him several years ago. They were a good deal but I didn't like the way they drove (but I might have been imagining things, I do that). I explained the situation to him and he cheerfully provided a full refund, no problem. From the looks of his operation in Lilburn back then he does good work, he has a nicely outfitted shop and lots of parts, plus some nice RX-7s hanging around (that was 5 years ago, but apparently he still has a knack for finding nice 7's, that black one is a beauty).

If he is running a Holley, then there is no shutter valve. This assumes he is using an RB Holley manifold instead of modifying the stock mani to work with the Holley.
Michael: His other engine is 6-port, but it is a GSL-SE. The coolant o-rings are still in the rotor housing. I don't think he is talking about mixing the 12A and 13B housings/irons. I think he just wants to drop the SE engine in and put a carb on it.
To do this, he needs a 6-port Holley manifold, 13b exhaust manifold or header, and crossmember from the GSL-SE. The Holley may need to be re-jetted to properly work.
The rotor gods do not seem to be happy. Someone must be thinking of a boinger swap...

i must make a correction to my post. u can't mix the housings from the 13b if it's an 86 or later engine. if the 13b u have is from a gsl-se u can use the intermediates from the 12a and rotor housings and internals from the 13b to make a 4 port 13b.
gsl-se addict, i missed adding that in my last post. i was on break and break was over while i was typing so had to hurry. so yes the se engine will work just fine with the se crossmember and get a 6 port holley intake.

How do I disable the shutter valve, just in case he didn't disable it?
I have a GSL-SE with the 6 port 13B and a Holley that fits on a 12A. What would I need to convert the fuel-injection to carburated using the Holley from the 12A.
Any advice would help.
Also, there is a vacuum hose that is attached to the oil tube on the driver side (where you fill up/ check the oil), that doesn't go anywhere. Any idea where it goes?
