I'm sticking with my original analysis... the shroud and/or underbelly pan. Even at driving speed those parts are integral to the cooling, and more so with spirited driving. Actually I recall instances at the race track where only spirited driving brought the temps up. Granted this was in a 3rd gen without the underbelly pan. The guy was working on his car before the long drive to the racetrack. He thought he could get away without the underbelly pan and that it would allow more airflow going around the race track. He was dead wrong and Cameron Worth of Pettit Racing pointed it out to him. The guy thought he was having other overheating issues. But, as soon as he borrowed someone else's underbelly pan all the overheating issues went away.

So proper seal or direction of the airflow and then the e-fan can only help.

Thanks Holly! I have a friend bringin a shroud to me at the Dragon. I have the under belly pan and it has been on the entire time. Either way, we'll get this figured out, with over 200 rotorheads put together, we'll nip this thing in the ***!

Darth, I know what your problem is, guaranteed. Your e-fan is wired backward. Under cruising, it's not on, but if you beat on it a little, the fan kicks on, stalls the air in the radiator, and things get hot. It idles fine because it has no problem pushing air the wrong way. Swap the polarity of the wires on your fan.

You can thank me at the Gap. That'll be 3 beers, thank you.

I hope Billy and Crit are right and this gets you to having fun on the dragon Ian. This is why I never want to change/upgrade anything already working on a rotary. I let all you guys figure it out.

 

I've seen track cars without any fan at all, there was one at the MazMart gig this spring as I recall. Shouldn't need the fan when you're moving, even if it's spirited.

Still, not having the proper shrouds might make a difference in directing what air flow there is and, together with a bumper that's redirecting air under the car instead of into the engine bay, this might be contributing. Besides, Holly said it so it must be right.

I like Crit's solution though because it's elegant, wiring the fan backwards sounds like something I'd do (and yet one more item in the long list of reasons for having a clutch fan).

And I like shrouds because they're stock, I figure the Mazda engineers must have had a reason. (Like that under tray, which keeps raccoon bits from getting lodged in your fan belt).

Looks like you guys will be having way too much fun up there at the Deal. You might need a chaperon to keep ya'll out of trouble so maybe I'll pop by for a few beers, especially if the electric company doesn't show up today or tomorrow to connect my relocated service.

 

I finished my rats nest removal today. I also stripped all the extra BS off of the carb, and simplified my wiring harness and re wrapped it. All I need now is an ACV block off plate and we'll see how she runs.....BTW the dual belt pulley was a P.A.P. steal at $5.32

 

Kevin, looks good. You didn't get the last dual pulley at PAP, did you? I was hoping to go by this weekend and get one. Was it hard to get off? I was figuring I would buy the whole alternator and take off at home.

 

Mike, if you go to the Buford yard, you've just got to borrow Crit's electric impact (or Kevin's) and you can buzz it right off as it sits. They come off old Chrysler minivans, so unless you want to buy a Chrysler alternator you might want to just get the pulley.

Well Crit and I rebuilt the carburetor, it fixed the fuel leak, only problem is that the car won't start haha. Seems like a float/filling issu so we're gonna have to toy with it later, the thread is here:

Either way, the 7 is at Crit's and I miss it. but I'm decently confident that we can work soemthing out in short time, hopefully Sunday but when the new mixture screws arrive in 2 weeks at the latest, I'll tow the car to get i out of your hair if it comes to that though Crit so don't worry, at least we know it can make it out the driveway if the driver makes haste)

You are exactly right. The 86 chrystler had a 15mm bore alternator. And Dodge, and plymouth. Take your pick!

I made an ACV block off plate and fired the car up for the first time since the extensive removal of crap from my engine bay, It ran good and idled smooth at 800 (cold) for a minute then started flooding....BAD. Turns out the needles in the carb were sticking open and letting gobs of fuel into the primaries and the closed secondaries. I had to take off the airhorn, take off the floats, take out the needles, cleaned them, cleaned out the seats, put it all back together, started to de-flood the car and killed my battery, now for some reason my battery wont take a charge and Im to broke to buy a new one. I guess she'll sit untill I can afford a battery, but I have high hopes for her once I get a battery

I had a dream that all of you OGTA people and I were crusing around some city I wasn't familiar with, and we found MazMart and went in and raided them. I got new S4 shortblock and a polished rotor for display, and when we went back inside the people who worked there showed up so we all ran off to our cars and took off, but I got lost and was driving around trying to find you guys. Crazy crazy . The only thing I remember about anyone was that Ray was there and he was obsessed with some cupholders.

I'm going to the AUTOCROSSSS tomorrow- my first one! Hopefully it's fun and worth half of my paycheck this week...
