Before the air and fuel in a motor is ignitied it is compressed to make the strength of the "explosion" stronger. Think of it this way, can you jump higher standing straight up or squatting down first?
The compression ratio of a 3rd gen should be 9.0. This means that the entire air/fuel mixture that enters the engine is squeezed into an area 9 times as small before the spark plugs fire to ignite the fuel.
Personally I think you should meet and talk with someone that owns and works on a 3rd gen (or any car you want to buy for that matter) before buying and have them check it over and test drive before you consider purchasing.
Also do alot of reading up on the forum and other places as I'm positive that any questions you'd have at this point have already been answered. Just use the search link in the upper right.

rotaryracer2005, believe it or not, but that's actually a completely accurate portrail of compression.
www.howstuffworks.com --> search for both "engines" and "rotary engines"

Are you telling me that you don't know? That is the fundamentals for why engines work the way they do. Go look it up. Everyone else has told him to go do a search. Try it sometime. I actually typed the wrong word. It should be static (not actual) vs effective compression ratio. It was late and I was tired.
Ted: I've seen a couple of others on the forum using older pictures of your woman for their avatar. I'm not sure if you've seen that or if you care but just thought I'd tell you. I am assuming that she is your woman and not just random pictures of the same person.
