VIR south, August 20-21

Hi, Fritz,

How are you? Wondering if you are coming to Alfa Romeo event at VIR south b/w Aug 20-21? If so, could you instruct my friend? He will drive e46M3 with SMG and it's his the very first DE. I will be there too. Finally ordered my BBK and waiting for GC AD kit. Can't wait!
Thanks.

Jon

PS. Oh, I completed BMWCCA racing school and am applying for the license!

Fritz:

Most of the events are two dayers with the Chin group. On the first day, there are some novice only slots, then solo only slots, then after lunch at around 2pm the track opens up to everyone. On the first day it's similar to what I've seen in your videos; you have to point someone by to pass you.

On day two, it's advanced solo half the day and open passing the other half. These are intermingled all day with hour sessions. In the solo, it's point to pass again; in open passing it's just as it says............anywhere anytime. What's funny is that on Sunday you'll see all the GT3's, Ferrari 360's, etc. in the advanced solo, not the open passing, so some psycho knucklehead in a $1000 240Z doesn't make them bend it.

How much does your group charge to run and what approximate track time do you see per day?

Tks,

dp

David,
That sounds like lots of track time. I'll email Dr. Chin and see if he needs any instructors. Typically all the car clubs I instruct in with the exception of Tracquest limit track time to around 2 hours per day and the price range is 275 to 350 for 2 days.

OK I finally was organized enough to get some more video but the filming is terrible because the brightness was turned up just a bit too high

I decided to go ahead and upload it to the pipline because I'm driving Joe Ramos's old car and thought he would get a kick out of it.

I was having lots of fun in turns 0ne and five rotating the car. I tend to get a little carried away though and I included a clip of me swinging it a little too wide around 5.

Video is at Summit dated 9-04

Heading to VIR this weekend and will again use Joe's old car unless I weaken and take the beast

Was running with the a Porsche group at VIR on the south course which is always a blast because of all the exoctic autos. South course is short but technical so your always pretty busy with the exception of the front straight. Car was running fine but I couldn't break into the teens. Just alot of 1:20s. There was a Porsche GT3 cup car that was running 1:15s and some Ferraris were running close to his times. I uploaded some video of me letting by that very group of cars and I'm currently icing my elbow

see vids http://speedwurks.com/fritz

OK, F...ING ENOUGH!!!!!! You're torturing me. Can't take it any more. Gotta have it back.

Tell me what you've taken out of it. What will I have to do to get back to MY FD??!!!

Do you realize the '96 911 Turbo with 424 hp at the flywheel only puts 322 to the ground, and weighs 3200#? The FD with the Bonez pipe in there puts down 312 and only weighs 2700#.

Damian,
This car is probably making about 280 RWHP with intake temps below 40c but usually the intake temps are about 60c so it's definitely a momentum car when running with the big dogs. If I get slowed down at all it kills me. I think it dynoed at 310 with 13lbs of boost with a midpipe installed. Currently the boost is set at 10 to 11lbs and it has a HF cat installed. It always makes me laugh when people give me the pass signal and then start pulling away on the straight not realizing that I lack some power.

Brad's old car is a whole different animal its 200lbs lighter and another 100 hp which makes it a very sick car. I Probably could of run 3 or 4 seconds a lap faster with it. Not using it yet because I'd like to get a passenger seat in it, it was shaking really bad the last time I used it and I'm not sure why, the starter solenoid is messed up so I have to push start it, and finally it has an oil leak. I'm hoping it was just an unbalanced wheel but I hate going to the track and not being able to drive. I may take it to VIR on the full course Oct 11.

My daily/track cym (Wael's old car) has about the same power as Joes old car but much better handling and brakes.

These cars handle so well that even in stock form they are no joke on a road course. There were some pretty bad *** Porsches at this event and the only cars passing me were the true super cars that cost over 100k and an m3 race car with a really good driver (class room instructor/racer was driving). I'll try to find some video of him.

Lets definitely try to hook up at VIR. You would love the full course and its made for your car. Try to make it to the tracquest event if they come back next year. Lots of track time in a very laid back format.

very good fritz, .... it is amazing what this little car can do on a road course, but you are also doing some very good driving, I need to get some instruction from you :-)

I'm just starting to get fast with the yellow monster I purchsed from fabian (foko), and although its tuned for 15psi (370 hp) I only have driven it at 11ish psi (wastegate spring)...so I still have 50 or so HP at my figertips when im ready for more, but I have a ways to go to max out the power I have now (probably around 320-330).

I havnt been to any schools or had formal training so next year i think im goin to do a few formal schools, that should clean up some of my bad habbits.

Thanks for the compliment and my only advice would be to ditch the slicks which are way too easy to drive fast on and get some R compound street/track tires. Learn as much car control as possible so it basically comes naturally which just means lots of seat time at the limit sensing and adjusting for over and understeer.
I've been using some Dunlop Super Sport tires which are pretty good plus they are only 129 at the tire rack for 285 30 18s. I used victo racers for the majority of this past weekend and they are so much easier to drive on after driving on the Dunlops. You don't go as fast obviously with the street tires but the limit is much easier to find and much harder to control so it allows for great practice.

For the money I still can't think of a more fun track car. I just hope I can get my track beast sound and ready to go for next year. I would love to see our cars flying around VIR together

>>Thanks for the compliment and my only advice would be to ditch the slicks which are way too easy to drive fast on and get some R compound street/track tires.

good advice, i did some of that already, here is snapshot of my 'tire' history:

- started with stock blue 95 with hard street tires, stock size
- moved to 245/45 better street tires for a while
- moved to 245/45 much better street tires for a while (not r compound but decent grip)
- moved to 245/45 kumo R compound on stock rims for a while (victoracers)
- got the yellow monster and ran with kumo R compound 285/30s (ecstas)
- just recently have been running the dunlop slicks (narrower than 285 but lots of grip)

maybe ill try the super sports, $129 is not bad for our size, how long do they last you?

I agree with Fritz; learning on slicks is counter productive to improving the driver. It's much harder to get a feel for the car if you're not real experienced and when it does jump out it scares the **** out of you so you're more likely to over correct or just not do anything before it's too late. In the end all you know is the car got evil but your brain didn't get a chance to really understand what happened because it hasn't learned to work at that speed yet. You end up under driving the car in order to not make mistakes.

A good high performance street tire is lazier than an R compound or a slick. When the street tire is over driven it takes much longer for the car to become irrecoverable. It makes it easier to learn how to control the car at the limit, save the car when you make a mistake and learn what exactly the chassis really likes as far as driving style. I insist that people don't learn much when they're scared or naive of the car (that's good though, the boneheads who aren't scared of the car are the ones who always screw up).

My gf is now running my car too and she's forced to step right in and drive it on R tires. I coach her a lot and she constantly improves but I'm convinced she's not advancing as quickly as she could on street tires. There are many subtle things I explain to her to feel for and she just can't feel them; they're too subtle. Finally there's a eureka! and she gets it but it takes too long because she fears the consequences of a mistake too much, she didn't get a chance to get her self confidence up.

The R compound or slick does everything faster than a street tire. They go faster but they also go wrong faster. They don't warn you as early or as clearly as the street tire that they don't like what you're asking them to do. If you "learn the language" from a street tire you're much more apt to take advantage of what a true track tire can really do for you.

Tires never make drivers faster, they only make cars faster.

If you have the chance absolutely get some good instruction. That is the quickest and cheapest way to go faster. The guys who won't go to class are the ones whose ego can't stand it. What rubbish. If a guy gets in my car that he's never seen and blows me away then obviously he knows how to do something I don't and I want to be able to do it too!

My point is we are just practicing and learning to drive so unless your racing sacrifice some grip here and there to allow for a more out of control and therefore fun experience IMO :P

The Dunlops wear much better than the ecstas which I will never buy again because I've had two left fronts literally tear to pieces after 2 weekends. That's with rotation and trying to make them last. If you have to shave them and heat cycle them it sort of defeats the purpose and you may as well get some Hoosiers.

G&W Motorsports is a race/performance shop for Porsche. Lots of cup cars etc...turning some low 2 minute laps or even cracking the 2 min barrier If I have the single cym out there I'll be shooting for some sub 2:10s

Just returned from Summit and had a great time in the Killer Bee. This car is completely amazing THANKS Again to Brad for building such an awesome car.

Laps times are still not great because I'm scared of the manual brakes but I see lot's of room for improvement. During seat time on friday I did some 1:24s but I doubt I improved upon that with NASA on Sat-Sun because of all the traffic and waving yellow, white, red....etc..flags it was really difficult to find any kind of rhythm.

I'll get some video going as soon as possible.

Words to describe the fun factor of driving this are not yet available so I won't even bother. Here's an analogy: your with your girl and you've found the perfect connection and it last for 30 minutes. It's that good

Talking VID of the MONSTER

We are very very fortunate to have picked some extremely well sorted track FDs.

Check the video titled: NASA 10-04 in the Killer BEE 1.24
