Typically, when I manage to lock the right rear it's in the first half of the braking zone into T5. Not so much a full-on lockup...just a gentle hazing of the tire most of the time. Basically, getting on the pedal a little too hard before the car has really settled back down after T4.

My thought on T5 is to compromise entry speed as much as necessary to get back on the throttle as soon as possible...so I don't typically have a problem with locking brakes late in that particular braking zone. That being said, my experience is limited to specrx7's and shifterkarts...sure niether are anything like that monster of yours

You guys are probably tracking mid to right side coming in there as well. After 4 I'm going somewhere around 100 and I'm just trying to get her straight

What's your name and have you been to any of the NASA events this year?
Thanks,
Fritz

In the spec7, actually shooting right the left most section of the track. When done properly, you're on the verge of sliding off the track drivers left as you come into the braking zone . In shifter karts, exactly the opposite. There is enough grip that you apex 4 relatively late, and hug the right side of the track as you brake. I'd be willing to bet, that in both the kart and spec7 top speed down the chute into t5 is approx 100.

Check your pm's.

If your braking from 100 and up going into t5 there are no differences

I drove a spec miata one weekend at VIR on the N course and I was amazed how fast you could corner. If you've looked at any of the videos it's the one with the spec miata name in it. That was also my 1st exp with manual brakes. Coming into the first brake zone I hit the pedal hard the way I would with the ABS brakes in my FD and smoke went everywhere and I almost went of the track

I should be able to manage the brakes much better I just need to have some more faith and go in harder sooner and then pull back nice and gentle. I might try some pads with a little less friction. I'm not even sure what's in there right now.

>>How many days are you getting out those used slicks before they lose their grip? Mine were dead on the 5th day. They may be pretty old though.

i get maybe 2 events on them (multi day events), .... so like 4-5 days, just like you :-)

Damn that sucks. I was hoping these things had been sitting around too long. What's even crazier is you literally feel the grip diminishing from one session to the next. It's like I was taking that corner at 90 and now I'm going 85 and I'm on the edge of track out. They really are sticky but I can't justify spending 500 for 4 days of track use. You can get 4 weekends on Hoosiers and IMO they are more fun to drive on. They seem to have more of a pregressive slide. The slicks seem to stick slide a foot stick slide foot etc...through the corner. This might be because of the extremely stiff springs but do you know what I'm saying?

hmm, I know there are a few different kidns of the dunlops, I have used two kinds, one being softer than the other, and I really like em, they do have a shorter life span, but I can get like 3 sets of them for the cost of one set of hoosiers.... however I have not tried the hoosiers yet, they are to much $$ for me, teh cost of a 285/30/18 hoosier is like 300!!! that is the entire cost of 4 dunlops!!! LOL and im a racer on a budget!!!

it is true you roll the dice with used dunlops, you never know how many times there were heatcycled before, so they may last a while or go after a few events. .... but i still like them.... by the way, I had two tires one my car for the last MAM event that were from the winning team at daytons :-) (the tires are marked on the sides)

When buying used tires don't forget to account for the costs of constantly unmounting/mounting and balancing them...

Used tires wear out quicker than new tires and so you end up going through several mount/balance visits for the same mileage you'd have gotten out of a singles set of new tires.

Damon is saying because they are not new they won't last as long so your changing twice instead of once possibly.

I can get scrubbed Hoosiers for 450 shipped. I had no idea the slicks were so cheap. Is it $300 shipped.

FWIW the slicks are way stickier than Hoosiers the first session or two but again the traction gets worse faster until it's like your driving on a rocks as you well know Hoosiers on the other hand have decent grip even when cording which is basically when you toss them.

I'll call both sources and see which one has tires which should narrow my choices. If your cool with it please pm me your source
Thanks,
Fritz

well that figures that the same guy that Brad told me to call

I have some feelers out for some Dunlops or Hoosiers. I will probably have to drive the daily driver this coming weekend because it's a 3 day event and my tires are already well done. The good news is it's almost just as fun to drive

whats size do you use, i have a set with rubber left on them that i could send to you, I only ran one day on them.

I was gonna just toss them since they would have to sit through a cold winter here.

That's way cool but it would cost a boat load to ship them overnight. I'm leaving Friday morning around 4am.

Come to the G&W event in a couple of weeks at VIR and you can use them torturing all those awesome Porsches with me I should have some new shoes by then. I can't wait to drive this car on VIRs full course. I may have to go with the bad tires and slide around all day and I bet that the lap times would probably still be better than what I'd turn in my daily. If your really going to toss those puppies let me know what it will cost to ship them to 22901 and I'll toss you an extra $50.

Seriously that is really generous of you and we really do have to get these two cars on track together. Imagine that video

Thanks,
Fritz

Back from VIR N w/BMW Tarheel club. This club does a really good job so if your interested in signing up for some HPDE I would highly recommend them.

Ran some 1:44,45s with 10lbs of boost on comp/street Dunlop sp tires which are similar to the Kuhmo ecstas.

New vids include a fast lap and a decently fast lap with some passing going on. I'll also upload a 3 or 4 lap run of 1:44,45s from the first few laps of the last session. The track was wide open and I had a huge grin on my face for 1/2 hour

Hey Fritz...for some reason the download stream simply stops when I'm downloading some of your vids at random points. Is there something I'm doing wrong or a better way to download?

Which vids are giving you trouble? I can try them on my computer and see what happens.

How's the car coming along?
Thanks,
Fritz

some guys have had the same issue with my vids, clear your browser cache and try to download it again, if you dont clear your cache then it thinks it has the entire video and will not get the rest when you try to download it again.

I got them now...yeah it's a bit of an odd issue. Sometimes I have to re-download a couple times before it gets the whole thing. It all seems okay now for some reason though...

The car is fully setup and ready to be tuned, but with the stock turbos! I'm getting the car tuned by Steve Kan this weekend, and I think I'm going to hit Infineon raceway in December with that setup dialed in. I'm hoping to have learn a good deal about tuning this weekend so that I'll be ready to tune the car when I install the single turbo. I'm thinking I'll install the RX6 sometime in early-2005 as a new year's gift to myself.
