onepointone, I was reading your web writeups and pictures. I may need to change the entire dash in my car. I have a brown dash now and an weighing the usefulness of putting in a black dash (and carpet change) in my car vs finding another way to accomplish what I want to do. Since you have pulled the dash, I'd be interested in your take on the job..... If this is off topic for this thread feel free to PM me. Or post on the forum in my signature.

yea, i dont think you can get very off topic here

the dash removal was... a PITA to say the least... theres alot of stuff connected back there that doesnt want to let go. the choke cable was one of them, but i figured since i dont need it, and it would be hard to take out from the back, i just cut it. theres alot of screws that you would never guess where there. 2 on each side by the doors, 2 on each side by the stereo, 4 up near the window, 2 by the steering column, and various other ones EVERYWHERE. the thing that you slide to move the air vents is attached and stays in the car. i think i broke mine which really sucks, but im not too worried about it. it sucked man, but i guess its worth it rather than trying to fish around for those wires.

you know how things are, they are always twice that pain in the *** to put back in, and im sure this will be no exception. if you have any questions, ill do my best to help out.

Well my friend painted his with the paint/dye stuff from Eastwood that is designed for dashes and vinyl interior parts. The dash also holds down the carpeting which I want to change also. I dunno, I am not in a hurry as this is a project car, but I want the end result to be done right, not half a$$ed. I dunno, I am still on the fence about it.

Hey guys, just got down here last weekend. I working up here this semester so I'm new to area (unfortunately so are my roommates) and I have no clue what do on the weekends.

So what sorta things do yall do? We're still under 21 and we live in the Chester area off Rt-10. Can anyone offer some advice? What are the parts of town we should go to meet people and just be involved?

Anyways, I'm driving a blue '83 GS in case you see me around.

im in chester off route 10 as well. i live right behind thomas dale high school, and i drive a red 85 gs. we dont really meet up that much since autox season is off right now, but some of us were supposed to get together for g-force tonight, but it didnt happen.

what happened to everyone, yall die?

calvin - i put the dash back in today. i must say it goes in alot easier than it came out. i guess maybe becaue i knew waht would be in the way and what wouldnt. my only problem is that i have ALOT of extra screw, and with solid motor mounts, im sure that thing is goign to be horrible . i was thinking today of how i could maybe rig some rubber in the mounts, but i guess ill have to see after it running. but anyways the thing that gave me the most problem was the a/c vents and controlls. the switches for the heat/power of fan were a major PITA, and i said **** it on the temp control **** and its not connected, i couldnt figure out how it went back on. no biggie i guess, i wont have a/c on the car anyways. i just had my dad hold the dash at an angle, and i connected what i could. also, make sure you dont sit the dash on top of wires in the back, that was a pita. the heater hoses in the back were as bad to reconnect as i thought they would be. overall, putting it back in took less than half the time it took to take out, and i was taking my time.


also, have you ever dealt with the streering column sheering off those plastic tabs? mine moves in/out 2-3 inches, and i think those tabs are broke, how hard is it to repair that?

From my mail archives:

Drive straight into the parking space where you're going to do this work. Make sure that the steering wheel is perfectly straight.

Pull or push the steering wheel to position it exactly where you're going to want it when the column shaft is fixed. This will probably require that the plastic column-and-combo-switch covers are installed and not broken.

Measure up along the steel steering column cover exactly 7.25 inches from the floor.

Drill a 1/2 inch hole in the steering column cover.

Drill a 1/8 inch or 1/4 inch wide hole into the telescoping column. Dave didn't mention how deep to make the hole, but I believe that about 1/2 inch was sufficient. Use as many sharp drill bits as you need to drill STRAIGHT into the column, without rocking the drill
back and forth in order to cut into the steel more quickly. I believe that this was the single mistake that I made which prevented me from doing the job perfectly. Having a hole that is perfectly straight will allow for the pop rivet in the next step to make a perfect fit into
the hole; without this perfect fit, there may be a fraction of a millimeter of play along the length of the shaft. Worse yet, the rivet may come out, requiring you to drill another hole (if you can) to install another rivet. For this reason, start with a 1/8 inch hole, so you can drill a larger hole in the same place some time later if the
first fix didn't work.

Install ONE (and ONLY ONE) 1/8 inch or 1/4 inch aluminum pop rivet into the hole. The idea is to use a soft material -- in this case, the aluminum pop rivet -- which can break away in the event of an accident, in the same way that Mazda's two original plastic rivets
did. It might be a good idea to check your riveter's documentation for the proper depth for the drilled hole. (This information might also be on the package of rivets.)

That's it. The whole procedure should have taken about 20 minutes, depending on the condition of your drill bits.

Now clean up and go for a ride.

Well, clutch should be on it's way!

Getting a lifetime alignment ~100 so I can get the wheels straightened, and if anything is fucked, I can just replace the parts and take the car back up for more alignments!

Did you buy that turbo with 3k miles on it, Josepi? I e-mailed the guy for pics/receipt and he hasn't gotten back to me. Looked like a good deal, new from mazda with 3k miles + exhaust mani for 330. Oh well, i'm sure another good turbo/mani will come along sometime. I think i'm going to gforce tomorrow night btw, not positive though.
