Thanks for the comments, medical school is the main reason I haven't done any track events since last July, but that should change once the month of May is over. It doesn't take a genius to do well in med school; just alot of heart and will power to stay up every day, including weekends, until 3 or 4AM and study study study... and then wake up for 8AM classes .

The PFS unit had some unresolveable issues (such as WOT cutout) and I got a great deal on the PFC that I couldn't pass up.

Haha, yeah i just got in from Sanger Hall studying. Another typical friday night.

 

Im writing a research paper. God this place sucks sometimes. I have had to write 5 different 10-15 page papers for one class on the same subject just because i wasn't making a concise arguement. Bah as soon as its done I'll curse the ground the prof walks on

 

RXJJang- I ended up ditching my purple computer for a PFC as well. It should be able to handle the single better.
I haven't done any track events lately either. Trying to make this thing more reliable at the track. I'm also adding a new suspension.

Hopefully, I'll make the big leap to a single sometime in the not-so-distant future. Your car is going to be a beast! What kind of suspension work do you have planned? I'm not too worried about track reliablity, as Rob did an excellent job in some protype cooling modifications. Perhaps, if I have the weekend off, Fall MADS may be in order.

Also, do you have much experience with the PFC? I had some questions I posted in the other forum regarding the stock ignition maps (in particular, the leading plugs). It seems as if the timing is too advanced (as expressed by Dave at KDR as well). Do you have maps that have been adjusted (retarded timing) for your current setup or any advice?

RXJJang- I haven't even pulled the PFC out of the box yet. The guy I bought it from runs the same settup that I'm going to have so he put his maps into the computer. He has tuned it on a dyno with a wideband so I'm not to worried. He also has a street port and since mine is stock I'm sure I will run rich. I may not even drive it until KDR tunes it.
Fall MADS should be a good time. I haven't been able to get to one in about a year.
Has Bob looked at the maps? I'm sure he could figure it out.

 

does anyone have street port templates i could borrow for a 6-port 13b? it would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks man, but I'll be broke for a while so I can't have any fun. Thats not entirely true. I'll be in an apartment on Monument avenue partying all summer, so gotta spend my money on beer and rent, pizza when needed.

It's not too hard to grasp once you get over the fear of learning...

You change jets, I change a injector flow rate in a map.

 

how does that work (yes, i seriously dont know) do you have a tool? is there something to adjust it on the ecu (the fuel map). can you change the a/f ratio at different rpm's? if so then why is it so hard to tune big turbo cars? such as single turbo rx7's? or do you just have different chips you can put into the ecu? i guess this is a really broad question, and maybe i should go read other parts of the forum, but im just curious.

 

The tool for adjusting the fuel/timing is going to be a laptop computer.

Why is it so hard to tune a single (TIIs are all single!)?
I'd have to guess this: Not everyone has access to wideband O2 sensors. As well as having a fuel setup that matches the flow of the turbo that gets put onto the engine.

No different chips are used, just maps. The maps simply put control the timing and fuel delivery. You can have for example different maps for different purposes. If your running 110 leaded gas, you can boost a lil bit higher, so you can tend to that by loading a different map off of the laptop into the ECU (not the factory, the replacement, whatever it be AKA wolf, haltech, motec, microtech, etc etc).

Luckily, I haven't really modded my car. I say that because the unit comes with a map which is pretty dead on for the stock 13BT.

You can change the amount of fuel delivery at certain RPM points, then it just gets blended between RPMS. So, ideally, you make it pig rich, then tune down to a safe A/F ratio on a dyno using a wideband, or, have a wideband installed into the car and have someone make changes while you go down a nice straight road.

 

Note, my "tool for changing the setup" isn't going to be the same as everyone elses.

For example, the PFC comes with a handheld controller. The microtech had the option of a dash controller, but I'm really not going to be changing things too much after I get it tuned.

This tuning with a wideband and a dyno can take quite a long time as well since it is mainly guessing and checking. Every engine will run slightly different so usually the last 10% of tuning takes the longest. I got ~20hp on the dyno with my last setup. Money well spent.

 

i guess thats a no is there anyway to get around spending the money for the templates? or is that a better safe than sorry thing i should invest in? i have 3 extra 6 port plates i can practice on, i just need to get the templates.

well my motor is going back in today.Also i stopped off at AED yesterday and it is final,they have the dyno on the way,its a mustang type dyno a prototype of the dynotech.They are hoping for it to be set up by may 30th,and are not sure about pricing or tuning yet,said it will prob. be like most 3 pulls for a hour and $75-$100 an hour.with the wideband O2.And also they willl have someone tuning if needed.

 

Do you guys happen to know a guy named Bill Wood from Richmond area. He has a dark blue 3rd gen with something like "ZUUUUM" on the license plate. He was one of my students at MADS and he got away without me getting his email address, and I just wanted to keep in touch.

 

well motor is in,anyone interested in a 88 TII for $1500 needs motor.The guy is negotiable with the price and will come down on it.my dad found it in the trading post and went and looked at it he says its very clean with 114k miles.
