How Not To Build An RX-7
[QUOTE=GoodfellaFD3S]Well, I've heard nothing but good things about your engine builder, and kan knows his stuff when it comes to tuning, so at least those two important things were handled correctly.

Mr.ihor just said it was a half *** job on the engine build, and the tuning, should the car is tuned really fast, when i'm driving on the street if i stop more then 2min the car start having a loooooooot of smoke coming out of the exhaust, everyone that is by my car were coughing, when they pass by my car i get ppl show finger, been called *******, piece of ****. is so embarrassing especially when my girlfriend is with me. That is why i dont want this car anymore, and if i keep it, i need to spend at least 5k or more on the car to make it great. the suspension, cat, interior, radiator, wires. etc i will keep it on least i win the lottery

I didn't say the engine was garbage, but the way it was installed was. John Duarte builds good motors. As I understand John only built the motor and T&R or someone else installed it. Can't blame John for that. I won't know for sure why it is smoking unless I take it apart. Normally I would suspect the turbo and install a catch tank, but when I had the intercooler piping off it was dry inside with no oil residue. It could easily be the fault of the previous owner. Alot of times people are cheep when it comes to rebuilds and insist parts are reused so you can't always blame the builder. The motor does run strong but vacuum is a little low. How many miles are on the motor? It is possible the previous owner lied about that. I know the car was raced and run at high boost on many occasions. All that puts alot of stress on the motor and increases wear. The tuning is so so. Wide open throttle it feels good but there is a bad stumble right off idle that makes it difficult to launch the car smoothly. I didn't have a wideband hooked up but it seams very rich, especially at idle. I can lean it out a bit next time you bring the car by. The car is in MUCH better shape than before you brought it to me. If you decide to keep it we can address the issues I mentioned to you and go from there.

Here is what probably happened: The previous owner crashed the car and insurance totaled it out. He bought it back and fixed it. The title was still clear because he didn't re-register it. He showed the current owner the old and still clear title and lied about the accident. When the new owner went to register the car, he was suprised when he was issued a slavaged title. People are scumbags.
Sounds a lot like the story of how I bought my car. I definately overpaid and have spent much of the last year pouring time and money into the car to fix problems that I asked specific questions about. I was informed coming into the purchase, asked the right questions and was lied to about the answers. A supposedly very reputable shop owner did the work on the car and the lying on the phone...
I definately feel your pain. I am told, I don't know yet because I haven't actually gotten a chance to really drive the car (over one year after purchase), that the FD RX7 is one of the most fun to drive cars ever made. So I am keeping it...and continuing to pour money into it until the whole thing is built to MY standard. When it is done...I will NEVER sell! Even though along the line there have been so many times I wished I had ran away from this thing, I have learned a ton along the way.

Yes, it is a big port as requested by the original owner but no way in hell I removed any material on the oil control ring side of the port.
I also did not assemble this motor.
Wow ! I hate to read stories like this.............
explains why so many V8 conversions !!!!!!!!!!!!

As far as the ports, no material is removed from oil seal side. The factory port edge is left alone.
I also did NOT assemble the motor or installed it.
At least the car is in good hands now......
John I knew it wasn't your work. All the cars I've seen from you run strong and are well built. Its one thing to port a motor, but there are so many things that can be messed when the motor is put in someone else's hands for assembly. You can't control that. Whoever slapped it together probably re-used the oil control rings or messed up on the clearancing. I've seen so much stupid crap. Springs installed upside down or missing, horrible clearancing, the list goes on. This is why I won't warranty a motor I port if the customer choses to have someone else assemble it.

I would agree with this. not only FD's, but any car that is heavily modified or tuned. There are going to be little issues here and there and they are going to require money and attention. yes this REALLY sucks that you were lied to on several points and got screwed pretty bad. I was not really lied to on my car that I purchased a little over 6months ago now but I am still finding little things that were done incorrectly and that need to be fixed.
On the tuning and motor install... There is no way to tell that after any of these mechanics performed thier duties that whoever the owner was didnt go back in and try and "fix" or install, or modify anything else. For all we know the shops did a good job (or as good as possible with what was provided) and the owner screwed things up...

ok here is the story, i saw the car on ebay first, read everything about what is done to the car and i thought damm this is a good deal. then i saw it on this forum. i was not a member on forum at that time, so i registered right a way and sent him pms, told him i was really interested about buying the car. so he said there also 3 other people are interested buying the car, if i give him more money then others then i will get the car, so the deal was 17.7k. The car is at new york Long Island, so i when down there to check out the car, when i got there saw the car, it was really beautiful, looks better then the pictures, so i start asked some questions that i had in my head before i when down there. Questions like, so this is a street ported motor? only have 4000miles on it? is build by john duerto and tuned by Steve Kan? how are the the breaks? does it need oil change? is there anything wrong with it at all? why are u selling this beautiful car? does this car have AC now? where is the lip kit? because in the pic there is a lip kit.
ok this is his replys
1.yes is street ported motor, build by jd and tuned by steve kan. ok that is ture.
2.He shown me new break pads, ebc green stuff, and i said those are really good pads, he said yea i'll put it on tonight. when he drove the car to my house, i want it to test drive it before give him the money, his dad wouldn't let me drive it. they only let my ride alone in the car and feel it. As i was in the car and he his driving, i hear a noise coming from the break, so i ask what is the noise, he told me the noise is coming from the new break dont worrie it will be gone soon.
3.nothing is run with the car last time i check, no problem at all.
4.the ac back, cause is getting hot.
5.he said he went over something and the lip kit broken to half, and he shown me the lip kit it was broken to half, and he told me he will order another for me and he will send it to me, and i still have got nothing. oh and he told me those are carbon fiber, which is not ture is was not carbon fiber. hey Mr. Ihor maybe that is way the oil pan were leaking.
ok after a week buying the car i got it registered, and took the car to Mr.Ihor. Mr.Ihor found out:
-the break where really old, front and rear break pads only have 2/10 of it left.
-the oil pan is leaking, not lot but a little. wrong bolt on alternator. blow off valve is hitting the side.
-needs a new motor mount
-coolant hose is about to split, and another things that were already post it on page 1 and 2.
after i hear all the problem it had, i try to call him, he never pick up the phone, only text messages. call his house no one answer, ontill on day his mom answer and told me they will let him know. i pmed him, i wrote what everything Mr.Ihor wrote on the paper and told me.
Here are my messages to him and his replys:

2. oil pan is leaking, on the driver side of the motor, can cause a fire.
3. wrong bolt on alternator.
4. blow off valve is rapping on shocktamer.
5.pcu valve/hose are missing.
6.coolant hose is about to split that can cause a fire in the engine.
7. map sensor filter is missing.
8.oil injectors are not hooked up.
9. the square end CAN"T get the wheel locks off. it will break the nuts, it need the wheel lock.
10. the front and rear shocks are different, the car is moving all over the place when i on the bumpy road.
His's reply
1.) i bout the brake pads used and put them on for you they looked in alright condition when i put them on, never did i claim to change the rears so i dunno why you even mentioned them
2.)My oil pan has never leaked since i had the car, and i can have 3shops stand behind that statement.. if the only pan is now leaking it is either from you scraping sumthing or hitting sumthing while driving... now there mayb oil residue n the oil pan, but that is from changing the oil filter and a little oil leaking out, thats normal...
3.)wrong bolt on the alternator wtf? a bolts a bolt, that bolt has been on the alternator ever since i bought the car(2years ago) and has never caused a problem your being petty.. car is mechanically perfect
4.)the blow off valve is not tapping the shock tower, the shock tower, the shock tower looks lik the blow-off valve is hitting it, because i dented it in with a hammer so that it wouldn't tap... the blow offf valve occasionally taps the strut bar... but nothing bad can come from that, once again the car is mechanically perfect
5.)dunno wat hose your talking about, alot were elimnated ttake a pic and send it to me, regardless of what it is ive drivin the car the way it is for 1yr with no ill effects.. once again the car is mechanically perfect..
6.)coolant hose is about 2 split n cause a fire??? last time i checked water wasnt flammable, the coolant hose is a "wear" item, meaning eventually the wear out, but since it hasnt.. the car is still mechanicallly perfect
7.)map sensor filter? take a pic and send it to me the world famous Steve Kan tuned my car and compliemted me on how well setup my car.. if something substantial was missing iam pretty sure he woulda mentioned it, once again your being petty.. and the car is mechanically perffect
8.)oil injectors arent hooked up .. lol my car has all the oil mod's done so that it runs higher oil pressure then your average rotary.. thats a good thing, not a bad thing.. if the injectors werent working u telling me it would last a whole yr with countless dyno runs without any problems i doubt it
9,)once again the square CAN AND WILL take the wheels off, my car never came with a wheel lock and past owner wasnt as nice as iam right now, ive used the square for 2years to take off all my wheels, ive done it countless times, if you dont believe me gimme 20bucks and drive the car 2 my house and ill do it in front of your face.. all you need is the square extension and a rachet.. how bout u give it a try b4 u say it wont work
10.)my fronts are different from the rear because the rears are brand spankin new... if you want the old blown kyb's so you have a matching set.. ill glady send 2 you next day mail as sooon as i get the brand new tokico's back.. as for the car being all over the place i ran 11.1 on 129 on drag radials at english town track.. how would i do that if that car is all over the place lol.. i think it just your style of driving....
i sent this to Mr.ihor after i got it, this is what Mr.Ihor reply
Wow what an ******* that guy is.
Used brake pads off another car should NEVER be installed. They will be worn to the rotors of the previous car and not wear ion properly to yours.
The oil pan is leaking pretty bad and I think I mentioned to you that it look like someone ran over something and dented it.
The alternator bolt looks sloppy. Like someone lost the original bolt and put whatever they could find in there. It will also not enable the alternator to be tightened right so it can move and loosen the belts. The bolt is too long so it is not putting pressure on the bushing to lock down the alternator.
A coolant hose won't cause a fire if it breaks, but the motor can overheat and be damaged. The problem is he used the wrong hose. He used a low pressure hose designed for emissions and vacuum, not hot pressurized coolant.
Denting the blow off valve with a hammer to make it fit? He should have had it properly installed in the first place. I told you it looked like someone hit it to try to make it fit.
The oil mod he is talking about has nothing to do with the oil injectors. The oil mod he refers to is to the thermopellet in the eccentric shaft. It alows more oil to the ROTOR BEARINGS when the motor is cold. Mazda originally designed the motor to give less oil to the bearings so that it warms up faster. The oil injectors that he has not hooked up are the only thing that provide oil to the APEX SEALS. they way thye are hooked up right now they are working only about 50% Yes the car will run, but the motor will wear out alot faster.
I'll find a way to get those wheels off. My friend has the tool I believe.
The reason his shocks blew out is because he used garbage shocks. It is a very bad idea to mix shocks. You should always use 4 of the same kind and replace them together.
Basically he is saying the car runs so it should be good enough. The car may be fast, but its not an excuse for how it is put together. Eventually it is going to cause alot of problems in the long run and break down. I feel bad that you spent so much on a car that needs alot of work. I don't think there is much you can do with him. Unless he gave you some kind of warranty, you pretty much bough the car AS IS. It wouldnt even be worth it to bring it to court. I think the best thing you can do is to start fixing the major problems that I pointed out and slowly you'll get the car to the point where it is mechanically sound. Let me know if I can help you in any way.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
That at the mean time i was saving money to fix all the problems. I was trying to sell the car on this forum. I made a Thread. i post all the information about this car. what are the thing i will be fixed and all the new parts that will be put on. and i used the picture that he used before. Guess what happen, he posted in that thread and say that the motor was blown, and every1 was asking me what happen and why i'm sellin a car with the blown motor at that price. so he is trying to mess up my sell.
and he say i use his picture and if i dont take it off he will suit me or something. so i had to ask the host of this forum to delete my thread. everything is just so f@#$ da up.
now at least all the problem were fixed thanks to Mr.Ihor. I'm still trying to sell the car, i can't pass inspection, there is no cat and the exhaust is really really loud. i get put over off the road even when i'm driving normal. And everyone on the road want to race with me. There is just to many problems right now, and i dont want to deal with it anymore. so hope someone will buy it soon.
If i win the lottery i will keep it.
I don't think he can sue you for using his pics... And I think he will get torn into if he keeps posting on here after ppl read this... Really sorry about your bum deal again. But I would hope that you stick it out and fix the car. You really will like it after the problems are taken care of. Most of these things are small and you should be able to do yourself if you just research how to do it properly and time your time. Get the pros to do the more difficult stuff. you have a great shop close by. It also sounds like the owner is pretty sympathetic to your situation and will help you as much as he can. Good luck....

i wouldn't even drive that thing until you get everything straight on it. if you keep running it without the oil injectors and it will definitely need a rebuild, if it doesn't already... and it sounds like it does.
also, if he ran over something that broke the lip in half, then it's likely that "something" damaged the oil pan too.
this guy needs to be thrown in an oven and you need to check out your next car a little better.

Ok hello people, i come to resolve the pointing of fingers here... I know the owner of this car, good kid, so please dont PM me for any info about him. He is who im not talking about, i just want to get some things str8 here with who is being blamed for this. I worked on this car b4 he got the motor rebuilt "when he had the stock motor in it" and there were people prior to me working on the car, that has hacked it a bit which was done by Smoking Joe, But the car was brought to me for springs and a non sequential job to be done and install a supra pump, which i wont be surprised if they rigged anything else on the car since i last seen it. I pointed out some stuff that should be worked on "save your own ***" is how we call it in the shops. This whole thing was before the rebuild, now down to the info. JD / John Duarte DID NOT BUILD THIS MOTOR, I REPEAT DID NOT BUILD THIS MOTOR.... I had plates that was ported by JD that was going into my street drag car which were nicely done "have pics" and i sold to him because i needed the money to move to Florida. The motor was BUILT by TnR and TUNED by Steve Kan. Im not going to say who has the most fault in it, leave JD out of this... JD knows his **** as well as Steve Kan so what needs to be known is who built the car, and it wasnt me either...lol i had the car in its worst state, and all the stuff wasnt rectified when I pointed things out, but like i said that was B4 the rebuild. here are some pics of JD's port job now i have had some plates ported many of times and his job by far was one of the best and cleanest job i have seen, plus he freaking went 10.9's on stockers on a daily driven beater car in extreme weather conditions like up north and was reliable, but any who hope this clears up anything...

I don't think at this point anyone is blasting JD or feels he is at fault here. Those ports look good to me.
I wish showoff would come in this thread and let us know why he sold a salvage title car as having a clean title. At this point his name in the rotary community is mud.......
