How to value your FD

Not getting involved in this kerfuffle - but thanks for putting this list together! (Though, I have a black/black R1 with 56k miles so have my biases.)
What I don't understand is what has happened to supply in the past 5 years. According to the most recent registration numbers, there have supposedly been a relatively constant ~5k registered FDs since 2015 (after fairly steep annual declines before that). But I don't see that current supply when doing searches. Five years ago you could find ~80 FDs doing a national search on Autotrader or the like. Now searches on Autotrader or CarGurus return about a dozen FDs. My local SF Bay Craiglist would often have 8-10 FDs for sale. Now it's typically one or none.

As for inventory, everyone is sitting back and watching what is happening. There are still cars out there for sale but most are damn near stripped or heavily damaged and then you have the original clean cars and restored cars. In the grand scheme of things compared to the Supra, air cooled 911s and S2000s, the FD really hasn't appreciated very much or at the same pace. Its a little hard to understand seeing that the 911s and S2000s have way higher production numbers in the US market. I still laugh at those thinking the FD would catch or even get close to the Supra market. Its nearly impossible to touch an original 6 speed LHD Clean title Supra under $70k these days. Under 100k miles and you are paying $80k plus.

This is the 95 on BaT mentioned in a previous post:

Looks like a nice one - even though it is missing the battery cover

Looks like a good survivor-grade FD that has been well maintained. Great complete set of photos, too. Now I see that my 95 is missing the wheel chock placed in the right side jack storage area. I always wondered what was supposed to go there.

Touring/PEP will sell easily at maximum market value just like they did when they were new, condition depending
Only DiscoBoys want R1/R2 because racecar
DJ 7 should sell his R model to prove this theory wrong
Chaste White is a boring white that Mazda probably considers a mistake, given a rarity in the US, it was quickly replaced by a more brilliant white on later models
White is the most common color of car in the US market, very bland

I thought the list was interesting and its clear the tourings bring less when sold around the same time frame as a truly comparable base or R model. I left RHD, LS Swap and cars repainted a non factory color off the list as they are outside the norm. The repainted cars didn't seem to fare well and they weren't even painted an embarrassing yellow so it seems color changes definitely hurt value on BAT.

This might be the best time in history to stack gold and silver. Bitcoin has gone full parabolic, BUT I believe govs will step in and it will drop like stone.
Regarding S2K's this is a great time to get one as they've just started to increase in price and you can still find a good one for 30 to 40k. I haven't seen an FD that I'd buy in years. Over the last few years most of the sales on BAT have been 93 touring models with tan interiors or the worst possible FD to own.
I love how people STILL say model, year etc... doesn't matter. UNBELIEVABLE how stubborn human beings are. The 95 will easily sell for over 50k even though it's VR/tan with 55k miles and a few mods. WHY, because it's a 95 and prices are up 20 percent across the board on cars, trucks, houses etc...
For those hoping that prices will come back down it might be a while. I suspect when we start seeing 93 touring's selling for 75k some nice base model, R2s etc... will show up to the party and we'll see the 100k mark hit.
PS.... F#CK the supra the FD will rise above that heavy chunk of steel poop, yes I'm also a stubborn human

Learn to drive on the right side.
I have posted this elsewhere. This is a summary of recent sales (2021 Q1) of Type RB and Type RB S-Package in Japan. Add about C$15,000 for import costs and engine condition uncertainty and you are looking at support pricing of C$40,000 landed, inspected and driveable.
High end cars are going much higher (Us $50,000 ~ 70,000 equivalent). Landed cars in Australia are asking A$20,000 more than Japan auction pricing. Historically dealer retained high end cars were asking considerably higher. again So private sales prices are probably much higher again.
The $100,000 days can't be far away.
We have seen a steady move of local buyers in Vancouver paying good dollar for LHD then spending through the roof to convert to fantasy vehicles.

2. Not sure about the disco boys comment. Some of us are built like actual men and struggle to fit in a touring.
3. my R2 is a theft recovery that had the vin ground off the firewall. It would not be a fair comparison but even with the limited R models that have sold on BAT you are blind if you can’t see they sell higher than similar tourings without question. Once again, this has been the case for a used FD since at least 2001 when I got into these cars.
4. I couldn’t agree more on the chaste white comments. I’m not a fan either. Still way better than cym or anyone with a poverty touring. (For those who don’t know me I could care less about someone’s financial status. I love every FD and have put hundreds back on the road over the years. I just love trolling these sensitive touring and yellow fd owners.)
5. Don’t be salty with us because you drive a red/tan touring. That’s your bad decision, not ours.

A rising tide lifts all boats...... (the fed balance sheet has literally doubled in a year and will probably double again in the next 2). The used car market in general is insane right now. For that matter buckle up because even new cars will increase by 20 percent in the next few years. A decent truck will be 100k in 2023 (steel prices etc... are going HIGHER). I won't be surprised if a loaf of bread is 7.50 in 2022. I was looking at 997 GT3s early last year and they were selling for 90k, a year later they are at 120k.

I thought so too at one point. But just seeing how the 2jz (even though it's in other cars too) and gertrag 6 speed have spiked to astronomical prices, its not losing ground anytime soon.
I'm wondering when we're going to start seeing RHD to LHD swaps on imported FDs. Maybe lack of LHD interior parts is holding it back.

1. No they won’t as that is obvious from BAT history. As usual a 95 is bringing a premium which has been the norm since I sold my first 95 in 2003.

Great cars period
I am not sure why people are arguing so much. Hell we are all FD owners and that by itself is something to be proud of. Not everyone can afford these cars and only dream of owning one. Touring,r1 and r2 are all great to me. I find none of them broken at all. I own a red with tan touring addition fd since 1998. I loved the car then and I love it just a little more today.
As I look back I wish I would have bought the r1 or r2 so I could have a little more head room. I am 6ft2 and I want to do a few trackdays with my Fd. With the helmet on the sunroof makes it hard. My car is set up to with more hp, better suspension, better cooling and better braking than a r1 or r2. I have thought about changing the roof for a hard top but I don't want to chop up my car. I am still looking for a solution. Either way I guess if I would have know what I know today I would have bought a 1995 r2. Either way I love my car and I built it for me to enjoy. I did not buy it to store it for someone that wants to buy it for a lot of money. I enjoy driving it and hearing it brap. The car you own is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. I do believe that unmolested r1 and r2 do bring more money. With that said, every once and a while there, is a person with large pockets that will buy a car that normally would not sell for more than an r1 or r2 but does sell for more. It is all about the buyers wants.

Probably makes more sense to use a clean RHD car for parts to refurb a beat up LHD car. OR not..........I'm not sure what's involved?
