Mission accomplished Chris, well done. Now, aren't you glad you never gave up?! And how do you describe the feeling of all but completing a project like this, requiring years of work and thousands of dollars? Do you feel like you are still on a sort of high or have you gotten used to it? That's one amazing machine, probably one of the nicest 20B street cars out there.

Congrats. Sounds wonderful. You need a better road to drive it on though.

Btw guys, I failed to mention the absolute coolest part of the car in my opinion---when you fire her up, the carbon clutch discs make a rapid metallic 'CHING!' Sounds like a samurai sword being drawn from it's sheath

Awesome Chris!!!
Sounds like you got your problems figured out for the most part.
I love the exhaust tone, I wish I had some tunnels around here
You're driving it around on the streets already, freakin sweet!!

I had the chance to drive the car over the weekend. Although it still needs a great deal of tuning, it is coming along nicely.

True true. Right now it is running off of the primary injectors only. I have sorted out the throttle tip in and afrs in the base map from vacuum to 7psi below 4500rpms. Next I need to setup the staged injection, tune the map to redline, and adjust the charge air temp correction scale. After that I need to configure the traction control (mainly so I can log wheel speed at this point), and setup the electronic boost control. Hopefully I will be able to get through all of that this weekend. I have 1,000 miles on the motor at this point. It has new bearings so I'd like to put another 200 on it before I really start pushing things. I still can't get over how good it sounds at 4500. I can't wait to hear what 8,000+ sounds like :p.

GoodfellaFD3S, when John B. rode in the car yesterday the first thing he said when I started it was, good god it sounds like you just unsheathed a samurai sword!

That it did! Reminded me a bit of the old Ninja Gaiden game.

Very cool project. Even just off idle, the car seemed to accelerate effortlessly - similar to a 2 rotor at 4,000 rpms. Big displacement power with small displacement gearing is a wonderful thing for acceleration!

Chris - are you coming to town to see the 4 rotors race this weekend?
Best,
John

The car is coming along. I took it up to 8,000 this afternoon a few times with Goodfellas. I have the fuel map about 80% sorted up to 10psi. The timing is set very conservative for the time being. Even so it sounds fantastic and pulls like a bat out of hell at high rpm.

The boost response is a bit too slow for my liking below 4000rpms, but there are a few obvious things I can do to improve it. First, I still have to setup the electronic boost control. It will start building positive boost at 2,000rpms, but the slope is pretty flat. Hopefully keeping the wg shut will sharpen it up a bit. Second, I am going to replace the 1.15 T6 turbine housing with a 1.01 T6. It should still be more than large enough to produce in excess of 600rwhp.

When I first started tuning I had the 14.6psi wastegate spring in (according to the HKS rep I spoke to, they randomly install the springs at the factory). My god was it fast! In 4th gear the weight shifts to the back, the front gets light and starts wandering, the rear tires struggle for traction, and the engine screams away like a WWII dive bomber with a death wish. I have never experienced anything like it.

I am very happy with the Pectel ECU so far. Setting up the staged injection was as easy as entering the size difference between the injectors and setting up the % pri/sec split map. The transition is so smooth I had to check the datalogs to make sure the secondaries were in fact coming online. Ignition has also been rock solid. The trigger wheel resolution is so high you can actually see the individual rotor pulses in the RPM datalog stream. The inductive coil setup has also worked flawlessly. I also like the fact that it is constantly datalogging. If anything 'funny' happens I can refer back to the logs to see what is going on.

Nice Chris!
Let me know how the new turbine housing works out. Hopefully the EBC will help out as well.
Awesome! I can't wait to take mine up above 5k

ZOOM ZOOM! Wish I had an extra rotor!

Chris, have you noticed you're more popular with the guys now that you have a supercar?

Is that why you want one? I certainly seem to be less popular with my girlfriend lately, so you may be onto something!

+1 for those coils. I've used them on a couple cars lately. Worked on a 35R FD at 20 psi last weekend and had no ignition issues. They seem to light everything down to 10:1 a/f ratios without complaint. This same car had horrible misfire issues with the stock FD coils and an HKS Twin Power at only 10 psi. Only downside to the coils is that they are rather large. If we ever make any headway on the 20B project we plan on using the 034 coils on it as well. What kind of dwell are you running them at?

Several of us had been concerned, not hearing from Chris for the past few days.

I have sad news to share. Chris has passed away. He was found in his apartment in Tribeca. An autopsy will be performed to detemine the cause of death.

Funeral arrangements should be made in the near future. With his family's consent, I will post the time and location of the services.
