Value of 85gsl-se
Value of 85gsl-se
I found a 85gsl-se that has 101k miles, faded paint and interior, but it starts and runs great. Original ower and the car has never had any repairs other than regular maintenance. The guy is asking $3000.00, but I feel that is just too much. What do you think?
I don't mean to take over this thread, but I am buying an 84' GSL-SE for $600. It's paint is in pretty good condition, interior is really nice with no cracks in dash and good original seats, no outside rust from what I can see. But the motor might not start. Clutch master and slave cyl probably need to be replaced.
I just wanted re-assurance that I got a good deal.

Well, it depends... are you able to fix the engine yourself? You might end up spending more getting the engine to run properly, then you would just buying one that's in near-mint condition!
By the way, I have an '83 with only 85k on it. Engine runs like a beauty! Got it with only 60k, and paid 1.5k. Of course, the body is in mint, and so was the interior (at the time, but i botched it badly)
Look around, I bet you can get a great deal on any RX7, as long as you know what to look for...

i paid 1,000 green backs for my gsl-se..a bargain compared to the 7 grand I payed back in '78 for my first rx-7. however, i talked her down from 2900...dont know what to say about your find other than try to bargain a little bit.
sorry, locklej, the engine comment was in reference to PVC's post. However, the rest of the comment applies
As far as the price. IMO 2k is good, for a car that drives well, with minimal rust/damage.
Make sure you check under the bins (in back of seat) to be certain there is no rust... that's a good spot for it to start!
Umm... also make sure she shifts well, and doesn't have any rattling/shimmy-ing in the rear end...

It all depends on what one feels IS a good deal. I bought my -SE for $150.00 dollors, the paint is faded, i had to rebuild both masters, injector gromets, fuel pump/filter,make the gas tank usable, battery, starter, i made my own battery cables, all the tune-up stuff, new belts and recharge the A/C system, flush the cooling system/new hoses and treat the engine with CRC block weld. The engine the other owner said had been overheated and the car sat for 6 years. Lately i've had to replace the oil cooler hoses, i have lots of stainless steel braided hose, so i made my own hoses even though i bought new ones from mazdatrix (i still have in the box) have the oil cooler welded. Now i need a new TPS (throdel position sensor)@ $166.00 dollors at auto zone.So i've invested some bucks into the car and even more time.I did all the work myself and the engine runs perfect(need TPS) car rides great and now everything works. If i were to sell the car it would be for $3000.00 and go no lower then $ 2500.00,,,because it's worth it.
-SE's are awesome cars and i feel proud that i was able to bring it back from the dead.

I have done what you are about to likely do and I would buy the car but for a much lower price. If it has 100k miles and no major work has been done then you are in for some big bills yourself. That is fine and expected especially if you can so some of the work. I have owned 2 SE models- one I drove from 60k to 160k and sold and another I bought at 150k 2 yrs. ago because I just had to get back into this market. I never should have sold the 1st. Your expenses will be for painting, shocks, struts, power steering pump, all hoses, both clutch cylinders, cluch, eventually the transmission and engine, etc. I just replaced the carpet and some trim. I have put twice the $3000 purchase price into my car and still have paint, transmission and engine coming up one day. If nothing has been done to this car then it just means that it will come due under your watch. Do not let that scare you off. Remind the seller that he will have these bills come up if he does not sell it. Have a compression check done. Check for wheelwell rust by removing the rear cartons. Look for an oil leak by the engines 13B logo. Does the seller have maintenance records? It is great that it is a one owner. Have a good mechanic go over it and use that as a bargaining tool and a piece of mind.
you cant really ask someone what they feel the car is worth if they have never owned one. It is like me asking you what do you think a custom made header is worth, uve never seen or heard of it before, uve never used one or driven one, but by going from the prices of other headers u could guesstimate between 75 and 200 dollars because tahts an average. Judging by all of your comments a "good" deal is between 600(needs work) to 3500 (wow nothing is wrong)
