squeek

Hi guys,
Under acceleration I am getting a loud long squeeking noise coming from the engine bay, when driving along it is more of a gentle squeek (as if a belt was squeeking) but it doesn't happen when I rev the engine. I know the dust boots for the steering are worn (I have no idea what they are though!) could this cause the problem? Does anyone have any ideas?

i have had a belt that would squeal unless i reved. belts are funny like that, you never can tell. not saying it is, but you shouldn't rule it out. have you tried starting the car, opening the hood and listening for where it is coming from?

I don't think you quite understand me, it only squeeks when I am accelerating (as in driving)

yeah, if I accelerate hard it sounds much worse. It doesn't do it every time I accelerate though. It's weird!

Have you removed any pulleys or pumps that were belt driven? Is your clutch fan (cooling fan) excessively noisey? Have you changed your belts recently Do the belts have excessive play in them?

consider all of these questions, check all of them and let us know. If the belts are loose or worn tighten or replace as needed. If you removed the smog pump it is time to get a dual sheeve alternator pulley.

peace

The throwout bearing is a bearing in the tranny on the input shaft. When you clutch in, your throwout fork pushes the bearing forward which releases the fingers on the pressure plate. Basically, it moves when you shift to allow the clutch to let go.

Shoot a little WD40 on all the belts and see if the squeek disappears. WD40 won't hurt the belts and it'll quiet them for a few days.
