Help! where is this annoying squeek coming from??

I've got an '83LE, and I'm trying to figure out what is causing this really annoying squeeking noise from the steering. It squeeks whenever you turn the wheel left or right near the point where the wheels are straight. The squeek sounds like its coming from right behind the steering wheel, and I've tried removing the turn signal controls, and its not coming from that in any way. I tried spraying some lithium grease around it and inside, to no effect. Anybody else experience this problem? How do I fix it??

Thanks to anyone who can help.

I've had that happen before and it's the cover on the steering column rubbing the wheel. Just look where the last moving part of the steering wheel meets the nonmoving part of the column. You might be able to grease it, or get in there with a file and take some material off. Mine does it when there's big changes in temp from the weather.

The cover on the steering column is already off of the car and its still making the noise. It sounds like its coming from maybe the rubber gasket piece between the metal tube containing the steering rod(metal rod that rotates as you turn the wheel to turn the steering box), and the steering rod. (sorry for lack of proper technical terms)

I cant seem to get this gasket piece out without risking destroying it.
