shifter oil level
Oh like the shifter extension housing? I think I just filled mine up to completely cover the shift rod, so around halfway or so. Don't think it matters too much. Also used some bearing grease on the new shifter bushings.
There is SUPPOSED to be oil in there, but over time it all drools out into the transmission through the shift rod passage.
IIRC per a Mazdatrix video a long time ago it's supposed to be about a shot glass's worth. I always just filled until the level was halfway up the shifter block.
I always used to leave 'em dry because, hell, it was dry before, right? But it does make a noticable difference. My '81's shift action feels almost like a Miata.

Mark, which upper plate are you describing?
The interior trim (plastic with boot)? That will pop out, gently grab it from the furthest back back point and pull up and it will slide out and away from the radio/clock/hvac trim.
First put in neutral then....
You will then see a rubber boot/cover, peel this back to expose the shifter 'plate'. This is held to your transmission with x3 10mm hex head bolts (6mm thread). Remove the three bolts and your whole shifter will pull straight up and out, you will encounter some resistance as your 'centering spring' flexes away as the shifter slides out.
You will see upper and lower bushings and small wave spring type washers to add some preload. I have been happy with the new bushings I got from Atkins.
Actually, DreamInRotary Youtubes channel is the perfect reference, here he is showing how to install a Miata short shifter, but bushing replacement is essentially the same.
