13B S4 swap into my 85 GSL
I bought an 85 GSL with the bad engine, apex seals gone in one rotor. The car has a straight body with some paint fade that I may be able to buff to a shine hopefully. But first I am going to get it running and driving. I started the thread to hopefully help others in the future because most of the old threads have bad links now and for something for me to look back at later when I'm done.
Hopefully some of you guys can help me through my project.... Here she is
Heres the old motor, it came with the racing beat intake and holley carb, but has all the smog stuff gone. Living in California makes it tough with the SMOG restrictions so instead of building this motor I plan on getting a S4 13B with all the emissions equipment and fuel injection for better tuning.
He is my new motor, its a S4 13B from an 88' FC. I got it from a guy that wrecked his car... unfortunately it's not 100% complete but it does have compression in both rotors
Heres some shots with it cleaned up and the intake on...

Good luck with your project, and you'll enjoy the 2nd gen powerplant in the first gen body. just be sure you replace all the commonly faulty stuff while you have easy access to everything on the block. Pull the intake mani and grease up the 5th and 6th port sleeves, replace the FPD on the fuel rail, get new gasketting on everything, clean the inside of the oil pan around the pickup and whatnot. Ya know, common sense stuff.

so ive been sourcing parts that i need for the swap and that were missing so far i have:
S4 Crank angle sensor- CAS
Entire S4 wiring harness
Trialing and leading S4 coils
13B oil pan from 84-85 GSL-se FB
-- this is to clear the steering components of the FB
I am going to use my 12A front cover and block off the OMP on the 13B
-- I plan on mixing 2 cycle with my gas to lube the engine
Since im going from a carb (low psi) to fuel injection EFI (high psi) i'm using the fuel pump from
a GSL-se to feed the engine
I still need an EGR, and i just learned that i'm missing the 5th and 6th port actuators.
I also need to figure how i'm going to mount the air pump and PS pump, i also need to source the ALT bracket and bolt for the 13B, unless i can use my 12a one??

thanks 87 turbo, i'll make sure i do those. Is the FPD the same as a fuel pressure regulator?
I plan on changing the gaskets that i disturb, the front and real main seal, all injector o rings and grommets, and i'm going to use the black RTV for the oil pan...

If you plan on having the engine meet emissions testing, you'll need to use all of the stock parts for that year of engine. The SE front cover, air pump, and aux port system will interchange with what appears to be an S4 engine. Chances are I have most of what you need, PM me.

Yesterday I got some time to tackle the 12A in my FB
ITS A FLYING CAR!!!
That 2x6 saved my PS cooler...
HERES A PIC OF MY LIL HELPER
Engines out and now I'm cleaning the parts that i need to put on the 13b... more to come soon
--- on a side note, the next time i pull this motor, I am going to do the bottom stuff first so I dont have to deal with coolant on the ground...

Nphocus: I dont know if thats the GM alt or not, I'll have to check...I plan on using the S4 unit unless that is a GM unit.
Another UPDATE:
I bought my clutch from Kragen (Scmucks or Checkers for those in other areas). It was a new unit, not remaned, for $143 made by sachs which is a good brand... I was happy until I went to install the pilot bearing that came with the kit. It was much larger than the bearing I pulled out. One on the right is the correct bearing....Heres a pic:
I went to Kragen, and of course they didn't have the correct bearing... a young guy was helping me try and track one down one and his older russian boss told him to goto lunch so I had to start over. Long story short I spent half of the day pissed off and driving to Kragen's to get the bearing. So those of you that are changing your clutch during your swap, make sure that your pilot bearing is the correct one. Atkins sells a clutch for 165 plus S/H, I would recommend that because you know its going to work for the RX7....
so I didn't get much done today other than pulling the bearing, tracking down new one, removing the front cover off the 12A and cleaning it and the ac.ps bracket... I had a bad oil leak. also got my flywheel from the machine shop, heres some pics
Mazdatrix flywheel stopper, must have tool imo
Block off plate for OMP
Front cover gasket, Exhaust mani gasket, Mid Intake gasket, thermostat and gasket, Radiator cap, egr gasket, oil filter, NGK plugs, and Fuel Injector O-ring kit with grommets, front and rear main seals, and fuel filter
More to come next week

i used the 2nd gen oil cooler and i had custom lines made they cost $200 but i used steel braided teflon lines a i had them done in concord. you can get a set from racing beat for around $100,
heres a thread that Scott made for the oil cooler swap

Hey R-cien just keep saving man, I'm going to do an in depth cost for my swap to show the real amount for the swap. Its more expensive than I thought it would be but I've bought ALOT of tools to help with the swap.
