I replaced the idler and pitman arms. It took forever, and was a pain. I had a pickle fork to remove the ball joint on the idler arm, and that didn't work at all. So I bought a pitman arm puller from O'Reilly's (one of the c-shaped ones with a screw in the middle) and then the opening was too big >< So, I had the welder next door put some beads on the inside of the openings to make it smaller, and that worked perfectly. After I got the ball joint off, I go over to the spine side, and now my puller is too SMALL >.< So, I go back to the store, rent another one and that worked fine. Luckily rentals are free.

The pitman arm was pretty easy using my modified puller, but then I tried to put it on backwards - you should put the ball joint in first, and then screw the 2 fender bolts in haha.

This was all after trying everything I could think off. I tried hitting two hammers together. I didn't have anything to heat it up with, so I did the next best thing; I took a can of compressed air, held it upside down and sprayed it on the stud trying to make it contract - which probably would have worked, had it not been 30-40 degrees Fahrenheit in already.

Now go figure I can't get the idler arm all the way on. I can't get it all the way on the splines. I can't get enough clearance to wedge anything in there that I can hammer to push it up. So, I'm taking it to a mechanic with a lift tomorrow and going to have them hit it all the on. A job that should have taken 3 hours tops, ended up taking like 8.

Good condition ones are hard to come by here, imagine it's prolly harder on your end. As far as I know they only came in that silvery color but I'm sure someone here can verify. (Glen, Steve)
Ok, nice, thanks for that, those holes look like they would fit three guages without too much drama too! But after closer look, it would be too much head ache trying to make everything else work. I think ill just try and fab up a 3 guage holder out of three sections of steel tube welded together on some sheet and angled, so i can get 3 in where ive currently got the one.
This is what the aus s3 console looks like anyway. The ally plate there is where the factory graphic equaliser was, and is temporary, lol.

Im just not diggin on the dash, door skins, etc. at leat the gauge display, kick panels, shifter surround and radio surround are home made.

Since theres no "What did you do to your SA today" thread, I'll post it here.

Got the car on stands today to prep it for the B3R run this weekend. Gotta change oil,
brake fluid, adjust parking brakes, check tranny and diff fluids and just plain look under there
for any issues I can prevent before the mountain drive.

Nah, it is but it isn't. I am trying to get it trough inspection but the rules here suck. Uh, the registration is mine alone for almost two years. It's up to date legally and insured. I am going to have it transferred on payday, It's just they are fighting the idea.
The problem started when the county guy seen the tag say 10 in big number and small 12. In KY it is normal to have month big and year small. In DE the tags say big year and small month. But like I said, on payday it is for a fact going though and receiving her tags.
Just retards is all, rich snobby, retards.

Splines on the idler arm? I don't recall seeing an IDLER arm with splines on it. Do you have pictures?

If you're talking about the Pitman arm (on the bottom of the steering box) it's not supposed to go "all the way" up the splines - properly installed you'll still see some splines visible on top. So long as there are threads visible below the nut after it's been torqued properly, it's all the way on - - the spline shaft is tapered.

& if you get to pounding the bottom of it to force it on, you run a good chance of ruining your steering box.

Fully and properly installed:

Drove the 85-SE home last night in the rain with the sinking clutch feeling. I managed to make it by careful clutchless shifting and angering people behind me at the lights (going really slowly instead of darting to the light and waiting minutes). Fluid level was empty. I had checked it 2 months ago when I got the car and didnt see any evidence of active leaks. But this does explain the partial bottle of ancient DOT3 I found in the storage bin. I topped off the reservoir in the rain and was able to bleed it. Access is so much better on the GSL-SE than on the GSL with that oil filter mounted cooler. I still don't see where it is leaking but the slave cylinder paint is gone so probably the slave cylinder. The clutch master looks fine.

I drove it in to work like that! Shifted to 5th gear at ~75mph and all hell broke loose. Downshifted back to 4th and babied it in to work. Pulling away from lights in 4th sucked hardcore Taste the clutch in the air. After I got it to work, I parked it. Next day, I tried to back the car up and the input shaft locked up. I could roll the car but engaging the clutch just stalled the engine.

Good car. It got me to where I needed to go before it went full-on tango uniform.

This happened earlier this year. I just this morning got around to disassembling the trans. Oddly enough, aside from the trashed input and countershaft, everything else looks fine. I'm planning on biting the bullet and going Turbo II. That was trans #2 for the year, I'm currently on #4 and it's telling me that it wants to retire soon.

I replaced the moulding above the windshield today. The drivers side blew off one rainy day last week. There was only one clip holding it on. So I replaced all 3 pieces. Kinda pricey but it looks new again. Replacing the antenna next week and the car will be as close to perfect as I need it to be.
Next I'm going to install a second oil cooler to my PEP FD. But that's for a different section.

Be sure to check the carpet & padding up around the master, inside the car - - real common leak point at the inside piston seals, and the carpet padding can absorb an amazing amount of fluid before it soaks thru the carpet.
