Not really how that works. Rubbing alcohol will stop water from freezing, or ensure that melting ice doesn't reform into ice, but it won't drop the temperature lower than the ambient temperature in the freezer. The bearing comes out of the freezer at the same temp the freezer is set to, regardless of whether it's sitting in a solution of water, ice, or rubbing alcohol.

Anyway, yes, it likely wasn't necessary to freeze them, one side basically slid half way in before I started tapping, but I suppose it reduces the force required to tap them in and lowers the risk of damaging them.

If you say "Candy Man" in the mirror 3 times it gets real cold.

Screw science.

The pollen finally subsided, so I did the semiannual wash and wax. Was also finally frustrated enough to take the pulleys off to try and stop the squealing.

I'm gonna use some low grit sandpaper to see if that cures it. If not, I may have to break down next year and do e-fans. I've been reading up on those and it doesn't seem very hard, except maybe finding old MR2 or Taurus fans.

when you mix IPA that was cooled in the freezer with ICE, the transition of ICE to water causes the interstitial bonds to break. Energy has to come from somewhere, and that causes the whole mixture to cool even more.

Try it, and stick your hand in the mixture to prove me wrong. I hope you get frost bite.

oh right, this makes perfect sense, that’s why they put salt on icy roads, to make them colder!

the total process of dissolution--decomposition into ions plus hydration--absorbs heat.

Keep reading past the first paragraph. Yes, the solution absorbs heat (from your warm finger, or a room temp bearing) to melt the ice and create a liquid solution that is colder than the ice. We're talking about something that is 32F and bringing it lower. Check your freezer temp, it's MUCH lower than 32F. In fact it should be set to 0F. The article clearly states the dissolution loses effect as the temp approaches 0F. Your trick might help get the bearing down to temp faster, but it will not make it colder than the temperature of the freezer, if it did, we'd just be feeding our freezers salt and water instead of electricity.

I had no problems pressing the new bearing races into new rotors at room temp. No voodoo needed.

they used salt and ice trick to chill sugar and cream to make ICE CREAM in the olden days before electricity was conveniently available everywhere.

Next time the power goes out or my freezer is broken and I need to press a bearing, I will keep that in mind.

This thread has gotten way off track! Can we get back to posting about our little cars and leave the physics to another thread?

Almost back together for some summer fun:
Finally found some Federals after they were all back ordered last year!
Replaced the ring gear and installed a new 10025 Exedy clutch
Making room for some much-improved oil cooling......

Can i ask where you got those tires from? I've been looking on and off for a few months now, but the choices are slim.

Yeah, there's a current thread about tire choices in 13". Those look good and they're from a known brand.

I managed to get a set from a supplier here in Alberta, North Country Tire. They had one set available so I had to jump on it a month ago and wait patiently for the set to arrive.

I got my engine back from the builder on Friday the 13th. My kid had football and soccer games all weekend, but I managed to get everything back together and today I had it all ready to put back in the car. Except it's 8pm and Im old and tired. Here's to Wednesday!!!!

The build:
*12A Irons with a large street port.
*GSL-SE housings and rotating assembly / front cover.
= "early-style" 4-port 13B
*all new bearings.
*oil passages "ported" for better flow and FD pressure reg.
*S4 aluminum WP housing and alum. 12A WP.
*RB IDA intake, "re-shaped" and port-matched to irons.
*new oil pan w/ baffle plate and stud brace.
*original NA trans was rebuilt with Miata gear set.
*RB light weight steel flywheel and Exedy stage 1 clutch
(good for 240 hp... more than I expect from this build)

I hope to put it in the car tomorrow night (fingers crossed). I drove it up until the day I pulled the original 12A and tranny (last September?) and I'm dying to get it on the road again.

Yeah, those gold Enkei's are my "main" wheels with Summer tires (Toyo Proxes R1R).

I also have another set of wheels with all-seasons for the Fall and early Winter. Hopefully Ill get to use them later this year. The car's spent most of the last 3 years on jack stands undergoing work in my spare time. Im hoping to be driving it this weekend, and in a couple weeks I'll install the new rack & pinion kit I bought from a fellow forum member.
