I have a 85 se with a 84 12a gsl trans. The 12a trans will bolt up and work just fine i have about 15k since the swap no issues. The main difference between 12a and 13b se trans is the 5th gear ratio. The 1st thru 4th gears are unchanged. But the 5th gear in a se is a little longer which means lower cruising rpm in 5th. The difference is the 12a trans will run 250 rpm higher at 80mph than the se trans. The s4 trans is the better of the 3 cant say for the s5 as i have no experience with it. To use it in a se you need to swap the tailshaft housing then it will bolt right up. It will give you about a 300rpm lower difference at 80mph than the se trans which is very good.

From what I can tell this is the 84-85 ratios for the 12A and 13B equipped cars.

84-85 12A man 3.674 2.217 1.432 1.000 0.758 3.909
84-85 13B man 3.622 2.186 1.419 1.000 0.807 4.076
84-85 12A auto 3.458 1.458 1.000 0.800 none 3.909

The last column is the rear end ratio. There are differences but they are not huge.

Today, a fellow motorist helped me with some customization of the rear end:

chart is wrong, although really its an error in the cataloging, as its different depending which one you're looking in!

the 84-85 Manuals are
1st 3.622
2nd 2.186
3rd 1.419
4th 1.0 (input shaft is locked to the output shaft)
5th 12A got .807, and the early GSL-SE was .758 and the late GSL-SE is .711

the GSL-SE has the 4.076 diff until start of 85 and then its a 3.9.

so the early GSL-SE's are a little quicker, and the later ones are a little nicer on the freeway.

Thanks man, yeah, i'm not really upset about it, its just a car and nobody was hurt, but its really disappointing. I spent a long time refurbishing those tail lights! Sucks to see my baby like that.

Side note, I literally JUST paid $250 for that rear bumper cover repaint. I could have swooped that into the insurance claim had the timing been different. Really, the whole car needs ding repairs and repaint, so perhaps its time to make that happen.

The change was during the November of 84 build date.

Wacky, I swapped an S5 NA trans into an FB and didn't have a balancer thing to remove during a tailhousing swap. Did I get lucky? I think j9fd3s said some had it and some didn't.

That S5 conversion was many years ago and anything is possible. will find out more when I take apart my spare 91 N/A tranny to convert my buddys newly acquired S3 auto. Even better if there is no counterweight

Its been many years since my TII FB, but through my research at the time, I don't recall reading about a counter-weight for the TII tranny swap, just moving shift lever position and shortening driveshaft

It's more like a harmonic balancer. Iotus used a T2 tranny so no need to change the tailhousing. You just have to change everything else like starter, trans mount, driveshaft, clutch slave, shift lever position.

It's an oddly cool night here, 70's in July, how about where you are? That awsome cool air for extra power!

Ok. Right thread this time. I attempted to fix my defrost tabs with the permatex repar kit. We shall see. I should have replaced the tabs but ain't nobody got time fo dat. We will know in about 24 hours- hey at least they won't be flying in the wind and I can always redo. Pretty dang simple even this caveman did it------ I think. I just bet I'm not the only one that was flap n in the wind and for say $15 if it works it's worth it. Heck if they do not flap anymore Im gonna be happy.

I verified my 85 GSL is
1st 3.622
2nd 2.186
3rd 1.419
4th 1.000
5th 0.807
diff 3.909

Thanks for correcting me! I found better sources than I did a couple of years ago. The search engines appear to be smarter now.

Here is a pointer to a spreadsheet I did a couple of years ago when I wanted to get a feeling for what the performance of the EV would be. Feel free to make a copy and play with it.

Vehicle speed calculation

It is quite useful as is for EV's because of the flat torque curve of an electric motor. Someday I will put in a way to show simulated dyno graphs and compute acceleration curves. If you have run your car on a dyno you could enter the peak RPM and Torque values and estimate your shift points. You can change tires and see how it affects torque and speed at a given RPM. You can also change gear ratios to see what that does for you.
