Here are some pics of my Black Turbo lil beast. Paint is all original, so with my OCD, I think I hand waxed/polished the crap out of it, just gotta stop before all the paint comes off.

Don't know how many of you guys have seen this but its a MFR peripheral port intake. I've seen pictures in mazda books the their mechanical fuel injection throttle body on top of it. I have my weber carb mounted on it now.

Damn that is a sharp TII. I dont suppose you would mind sharing some detailed pics to help me get my 88 back to original would you?

Oh and my unobtainium is a NOS original black dash for my 83 FB. It needs a new home if anyone is interested. I dismantled the car and unfortunately the dash is about the only surviving piece of my near mint interior. It was in the car for about a year and is still essentially perfect. Its free to a good home if you pick it up.

Here's a few more additions to the unobtanium parts thread, I got lucky on ebay.

I bought this nearly perfect air filter for $55 plus $25 shipping, which was refunded because I picked it up locally. I'm always looking for these in good shape and you can never find them, but this one came off an 83 GSL with around 23,000 miles on it, must have spent most of the last 28 years in storage. When I opened it up I found the original air filter in there, I've never even seen one of those before:

But here was the real find, sitting over in the corner of this guys garage were these beauties, a pair of mint red leather seats from the same 83 GSL. I couldn't believe it when I saw them and I hope my jaw didn't drop too far when he accepted my offer of $52 (the $27 that was in my wallet plus the shipping refund on the air filter):

They should go nicely with the minty red leather steering wheel I picked up on ebay last year

The Rotary Gods are smiling.

You, sir.... you are fast!

Check it: Still got the factory Cosmoline on it, in an ancient plastic bag.

Look at the logo in the upper right, though:

It's not quite that old... It is older than 1980, though.

My understanding, if I remember what I was told correctly, is that this is a 1977-1978 12A EGR housing.

Nitriding didn't start until 1979, apparently.

The only dimensional difference I can find, and I've been measuring the hell out of this thing so far including port shape and location, is that the EGR passages from the EGR valve to the intake runner are of a smaller diameter than on the 1980 midplate. 7mm top opening rather than 9mm, & smaller ID:

Which, frankly, strikes me as pretty easily correctable, as they run in a straight line. The same EGR valve will fit just fine, as it has a single, oval opening covering those ports.

It's even got the same "one missing" 18-tension bolt pattern.

Considering that a lapped used housing would not retain any nitriding to speak of anyway (it's only a couple thousandths thick on a new housing, I'm told), and this housing would be at full thickness, I don't see the lack of nitriding to be a serious downcheck for me at this point.

weird, i thought the only EGR equipped Rx was the california 80 build, so i'm surprised...

nitriding was introduced for the Rx7, so that's a pre Rx7 plate, but it IS new and it IS flat, and it does have EGR, so its a runner!

just between you me and the CARB, you could bolt the EGR valve to a non EGR center housing and it would have zero effect on emissions....

You know, I've often wondered about that... but I don't have the money or equipment to experiment with it, not having access to an exhaust gas analyser.

EGR on a rotary has often struck me as a net loser, done because it was legally mandated but largely unnecessary due to the rotary engine's chamber/port geometry. It kind of EGR's on it's own, if you take my meaning.

But being unable to experiment means having to do things 'by the book,' unfortunately... and non-EGR center irons don't have the bolt holes for the EGR in any case - - I'd have to epoxy it onto the blank pad on top!

Evidently, EGR was mandated by California on pre-RX7 rotaries too. I've seen references to low-emissions versions of the Wankel starting in the 73-75 time frame on rotary aviation sites.

that is exactly what it does, mazda calls it "internal EGR" the Rx8 (and skyaktiv) SAE papers talk about the effect, they are actually both designed around reducing the EGR effect.

with the pre Rx8 engine, they put a 5 gas analyzer in the compression stroke, and measured the CO at about 3%!

Peepers has X castings, its got the coolant temp sensor hole in the top of the center housing

Awesome find on that iron DD! Are you sure the non EGR irons don't have the bolt holes on them? It's been a while since I looked but I could have sworn my 12a has them....

I had this posted in another thread, but didn't get a whole lot of views, figured I might as well post here since I consider these to be very unobtanium.

It's a full set of badges (sans the sticker on the front bumper) from a 84 JDM only factory 12at - the Savanna Rx7 GT-X Turbo. I've loved the factory turbo first gens forever and it's my dream to be able to import one someday, for now though I'll just have to do with the badges

For reference, the two smaller "Rotary Turbo" ones go on the sail panel in the same spot that our 83 LE badges would be, and the larger "Rotary Turbo" and "GT-X" badges go on the back left where a GSL-SE badge would go.

These cars also had a large "Rotary Turbo" sticker that went on the front bumper below the molding on the right side (our passenger side) of the license plate. I was unable to get that unfortunately.

Anyway, enjoy!

Not dead-sure, no... as I've never owned a non-EGR housing. Can't imagine why they'd bother to drill and tap them, though.
