V8???

I have a 1986 rx7 n/a. I also have a 350 chevy small block v8 out of my grandads truck. Should i use it in a swap from www.grannysspeedshop.com. I think it will be cheaper, and faster than any 13bt that i could do. Please give me your honest opinion. I am mainly thinking about this swap because i am 17 and it will end up being much cheaper and a lot lower maintenance.

what transmission do you plan to use?

I say go for it, but I'd get your flame suit on.

Just my 2cents! go buy a monte carlo! leave the WORLD CLASS SPORTS CARS the way thay where built.

would you put a rotory in a camaro or some other pice of ****??? Nice push rods

Brings up a good point, why the heck can't there be one V8 swap post without that stuff. It's been rehashed over and over. Everyone knows that people here don't tend to like it so why beat a fosilized horse?

Regardless of your level of objection, if you had the choice between a FC getting thrown out and crushed into a cube or getting a V8 dropped in it, which would you choose? Most of the public does not "get" the RX-7 so it's certainly not the worst compromise.

LOL, I'd love to see a V-8 thread where people just answer the question, instead of resorting to the typical anti-piston rhetoric...

M35514H, many swaps like this end up being an ill conceived, half-assed mess that ends up in the junkyard.

It takes some time and effort to do it right.

I'm not sure that I'll be much cheaper than a 13bt conversion, but probably more reliable. And you'll have the torque that rotaries lack. You'll need a new tranny either way.

You have a point, this topic has been rehashed over and over, it's time that people learned that doing a V8 swap is not something you ask about on a rotary forum.

the rotary is actually heavy for it's size. The 350 is still heavier, but why a second gen......why not a first. i mean if you're gonna do it ( i wouldn't, but that's just me) go with the lightest thing possible. but if that's all you have available then best of luck........enjoy your drag sled

I like the direction this thread's going!
So what about all the "rotary fanatics" that are only interested in drag racing? Are they not wasting the car and thus defiling the devine purposes of the RX-7? Clearly the car was built for more than that. Someone with who made the car more of a GT with a V8 could potentially be closer to living up to the spirit of the overall car than the rotary drag racer. (tongue in cheek here, no getting POed)

I may be new here but I can understand the point of "Rotaries only" but last time I checked this is an RX-7 Club, not a Rotary Club. I'm a rotary fanatic. But I say if he's already got the engine waiting why not go for it? It is true that the 13b lacks torque. I have a friend who has a '90 Firebird with the 3.1 V6 and she can stomp me for initial launch, especially if we're on a hill (Although I'm fairly sure that I could beat her for top speed). And besides, who knows? Maybe that V8 will make one hell of a beast out of that RX. I know mine needs some help at times (stock '89 N/A Convertible w/5speed ). So maybe this can be the black sheep of the RX-7's.

For me, and keep in mind this is my opinion, Mazda RX-7 means rotary. If you take out the rotary you no longer have an RX-7. For the record I didn't say he couldn't talk about the V8 conversion here, I just advised not to in a pro-rotary forum such as this one. He can do so if he likes, but flamming by others will insue.

The NA 13B doesn't have much low-end torque, but it does just fine in the mid and high range last time I checked. Although having a heavy *** car like a vert can make the low-end problem much worse. I bet if you had a lighter model you could beat her domestic off the line, or at least not get beat so badly.

Just a thought, not a flame on your vert's weight (An RX-7 is an RX-7 to me as long as it has rotary power).

You can drop in a 350 that puts out say 300 HP, or you can drop in a 13BT that can be made to put out 200-250 HP and is 1.3 Liters instead of 5.7. 4.4 Liters of engine space is pretty damn heavy when you're talking about a cast iron block and heads. Just my 2 cents.

13B lacks torque! what ever! show me a stickercharged honda with more torque than a mild tune turbo II.

it is called rx7club, but its directed at all rotary powered cars,so in my opinion it is a rotary club.

IF you do this and you do not have much money ,you do not need a kit or any adapter that cost alot . it can be done for cheep with an auto trans.R Gray has done several 1st gens with out any kits or adaptors, just smart power.
