Hmm...
Go buy yourself a 5.0 if you want cheap and decent straight line performance. It's pretty 'nekkin too! I don't think they have t-tops and gold chains though.
You've got QUITE a bit to learn about LSx engine family. To suit my needs, only GM drivetrains would have worked for me. Tired of the porsche bull watercooled engines of yesteryear and the 911 watercooled, pissed off at the STi and Evo issues. So here me out whether you like it or not, as it appears you seek guidance on the LS1 world.
1) Like any "relatively attainable" engine, for a turbo with engine, expect at least 20K.
2) ANY 3rd or 4th gen. small block GM v8 is a LSx. everything from the 4.8 to the 7.0 is a LSx to the performance community. So excluding little variants, most performance things are interchangable/
3) You *could* do a cheap turbo build. As in... finding a 'yard LQ4 (The Denali/ HD Fe 6.0, it's a lower compression engine than the LQ9) and a very cheap turbo setup. Like anything, tune makes all the world. There are stock internal aluminum 5.7 LS1's north of 650rwhp, all because of safe tune.
4) The rotary engine is simple in theory, however, it's a very niche engine, and practically speaking, your going to be S.O.L. wrenching if your accustomed to the mechanics of a piston engine.
5) When/if you decide and go for a ***** out LSx build, then practically speaking, you'll be into another league entirely, like hunting the quadruple horsepower digit vipers and what, expect... 35K+ for a complete driveline and support (shortened 9", chassis work, suspension, trans, engine, fuel, etc. etc. etc)
6) It was indeed touched by the hand of God, that torch is passed now to the LS9 variant and its hellspawn.
That all said.
You got options:
A) Rebuild the thing and live with the costs.
B) Get a street/strip car off of racingjunk or someplace, get 'er huffing some giggle gas
C) write the car off as a learning experiment: dive in, do it yourself ?
D) ATTEMPT the swap, only to later realize that like any major project, your budget wasn't properly allocated for. Whatever you think it costs, take the cost of the engine and trans you want, and take the conversion costs, and multiply by 2... or 3 depending on your luck.
Option A) and C) could broaden your horizons. D) cool, but realize you potentially open a can of worms.
B) the cop out, but works!

this post was pretty pointless, but, if ur saying its gonna cost 35k for a engine swap.. ur obviously wrong, im getting mine done for under 10k.. =/ just gotta know the right people.

I know plenty of "right people," and I know plenty of people who've tried to do it bare bones cheap(not rx7's, but 3rd gen and 4thgen style LT1 among others). I guess we disagree on definition. however, that's opinion, so it's not really debatable.
You want 600hp? Yea, you can do that on a stock LS1, not sure about the 5.3s, but good luck, you'll still have to swap intakes and pans, and ditch the flexplate.
Then you'll need a very smart tune on the dyno. Oh, let's not forget the T56, the clutch, probably a spec3+ or something like that is sufficient enough, now you got that done. So what's next? Either stay with stock donuts for tires, or you'll be looking to dump that rear quicker than the 10 bolt f-body.
If you pull it off, I'll be a cheerleader, if you don't; I'm not gonna be entirely surprised.
I want it to pull through, because if it turns out well enough, it'll be pretty popular and put down a fresh path. this is good for the ls1.
Labor should run about 80/hour. I know of far cheaper in private waitlist shops however. It ain't the big parts that gigs ya, it's the little ****.

You sit in front of your computer talking **** about rotaries..Yet you don't know a clue about them. Tell me how many apex seals a rotary has, or how many intake ports a 13BREW has? Hell here is an easy one..How many sparks plugs?
You mean you don't know ALL of that.
$10 bucks says...you've never seen inside a rotary first hand.
I'll even go as far as saying you haven't even had that car more than 2 years.
I'm pretty sure your car had next to no engine mods..and I've ridden in stock FD and its nothing fantastic.
Another $10 says you bought the FD...thinking it looks cool AND you could make it SUPER MAD FAAAST and now you just want it because it looks cool.
You sit here and try to make burtoncr look dumb..little did you know He ALREADY swapped his..before you even had the money to.
MY questions about your swap
I'd like to know the measurements on your soon to be turbo?
what size injectors will you be using?
What engine management will be used for tuning ignition and fuel?
Does the turbo have an internal WG or external?
What type of fuel pump will you be using to support 600hp?
Finally, What type of prepping will be done to the engine to run 10psi and up?
Do you know any of those questions? or is the shop just doing everything?
Just please stop running your mouth....you have no clue as to who anyone is on here. For all you know, the owners of Gotham and or RX7.com could have posted in this thread buuut..you wouldn't have known that.
I know plenty of guys with V8 swapped 7s. They will tell you why they swapped...Most spent YEARS with rotaries and they AREN'T ******** about it.
ASK GsrSol. His car was VERY fast with the 13BREW in it. He swapped for the LSx engines...do I hate him? No. Why? He don't have his head stuck up his ***, thats why.
Trust me, I don't problems with swapped 7s

did u know, most people use 5.3L 323 heads on the LS1 for better combustion?
and yes, it will happen.. b/c im most definately not sticking w/ the rotary.. to many problems and i dont like the way it runs.. my car goes in the shop this week sometime.. hopefully, they have to get there other project outta the way b4 mine can commence, and as far as i know, this will be the first 323 swap... i've seen 350's.. LS1.. and so forth.. LS7.. LS2.. but not a 323.. and most of it will be custom fabricated. and i will not be spending anymore than 10k..
ill most definately keep u updated on it..

That is what Im saying...You come on here...running your mouth to people that have a lot more experience and years under their belts when it comes to RX7s and rotaries. I'm not talking about your LSx engines. I'm talking about rotaries.

honestly, u would owe me $10.. i have seen a stock 13b.. and a ported 13b.. i've seen the inside of a 900hp rotary engine.. i've actually seen "The Rotors." and to answer ur questions.. the turbo will be a garret.. im thinking a T3/T4.. the prepping of the engine wont need much.. its already got a iron head, it doesnt have an aluminum head like the LS1.. so it can take much more punishment... and on the rest of ur questions im a little cloudy.. we've just talked to the guys, not in depth about it, we just mentioned to them, can you do it? and of course they said yeh.. the piping for the IC and the turbo will be custom fabricated by hand.. i dont even know where the turbo will be located at.. its gonna be using a T56 tranny.. the trans am tranny.. and as for the rear end, im probably gonna keep it stock until i look further into the rear ends.. for right now, i just want the swap done.. im not trying to get to ahead of myself.. i still need to get my headlight conversion, a hood.. i would've gotten a hood already, but i might have to use a specific hood, or i might not have to.. it might sit stock height.. but back to the questions.. im clueless... but if ur interested, i will let u know during the swap.

People like you make my brain hurt.
I called your blown motor and I'm calling that you will never swap for a GM motor.

I am trully not a expert at piston motors, but do you have to change the pistons, connecting rods, crank, and cam when prepping one for boost.
I am not sure why cast iron heads are better than alum, i know someone that has a supercharged mustang that is in the 1200hp range running alum heads. I am not sure what size motor he has in there but he had to change everything except the block.

That is alot of time posting for someone that doesn't have the time to read up.
I think you are just post hoorring.
O yea i think you just got called out from above.
I thought they used the 6.0 iron heads more because it was a quick way to lower the compression ratio, instead of cranking it up a tick with 5.3's? 5.3 heads are for the N/A performance, if not this is news to me. What headers would you go with?
I suggest you run your ideas over at ls1tech, not the conversions subforum, post it in the FI subforum.
you'll need to upgrade the valvetrain however, and definitely the fuel system.
oh yea, for whoever asked about the iron heads:
the iron heads are preferred for high boost apps where deformation and cylinder pressures can lead to warpage, but they can detonate like mad though. The aluminum ones however, would dissipate heat more though. It's been a while since I explored the F/I LSx world, so I could be quite wrong.
