GA 12A Checking in (Kennesaw)

Just picked her up two weeks ago, been shaking out all the little squawks here and there, and prepping for paint. A little rust in some spots, and the car's obviously been raced, but the engine is STRONG! Just got the compression numbers Monday from Mazcare here in Atlanta, and I couldn't be happier. as far as I know, the car is stock except exhaust, wheels, and the "system" I've already uninstalled.

The goal isn't a full restoration, but rather a tastefully reconditioned street/track car that will see weekends at Road Atlanta. Interior will be bare, battery relocated, fuel cell installed (maybe).
Old guys with 12As club meeting-kfp8txu.jpg

First things first, I replaced all fluids when I first got the car, air filter, oil filter, plugs, brake pads, and then I came across what I want/need to address first. The rolling stock. Not only are the bushings all rotted throughout the undercarriage, but the shocks are done, as well as the calipers either need to be rebuilt or replaced.

Next, I turned my attention to the interior, as I had already noticed the tell-tale split at the top center of the rear glass's weatherstripping. My fears were confirmed; the carpet was soaked underneath the storage compartments, and the frames to the compartments themselves were rusted as well. all of this was removed, including the sound deadening to prep for interior paint.

Like I said, this car is definitely a work in progress, but a fun one its been so far!

I'm always interested in meeting new car buddies, and the expertise on these particular makes and models would be much appreciated. I am an aircraft electrician by trade, so just wait till you see how I do the harnesses

That would look good in the Shrinking Kilt parking lot. I like the color combination.

I like it and I don't. If it had the ***** to back up how it looked, sure, but we're talking about a stock 12a here. Instead of standard restoration primer grey, I'm considering going with grey plastidip instead, leaving me the option to go back to the madzaspeedish livery once I've turned my attention to carb work, exhaust, suspension, etc. I have about 8 aerosol cans of gunmetal matte plastidip sitting next to the car at the moment, I was actually going for the military aviation theme with the grey paint and white wheels...
Right now, I'm mostly worried about stopping the bleeding as far as bodywork goes. I've found minimal rust, all surface, but the insides of the fenders, rear, etc all have the little slugs left over from previous rust repair. Sad thing is, rust is growing from said repairs! Still digging, still making a list.

I dunno PB, it don't get no better than a 12A.

You should reconsider, and bring that pumpkin to the April Fool's, meet with the 12A humming. Love that orange and black.

PS, this is all wrong: "I was actually going for the military aviation theme with the grey paint and white wheels... "

You better photoshop that first.

That was definitely a great deal, Ray. The car does have lots of potential.

That orange car was driving around Marietta for a while. It had a rather loud exhaust at one point, if I remember correctly.

Congrats on the car Ray, I'm sure it will clean up nice!

Wouldn't it be something if Ray showed up to a meet in a rotary... :-)

I remember seeing that Orange FB on craigslist some time ago, glad to see it's in good hands again. It really doesn't look that bad from the pictures, the paint looks sort of cool...

We had a good time yesterday running through the mountains. I counted 25 cars, ranging from Mustangs to a Scion FR-S to an old AE86 to rotaries to an old Ford Falcon to BMW's. Very diverse.

I dont even think I want to change it. It sounds so... triumphant...so...angry. It sounds like a chainsaw from hell. I love it.

haha yah i know and I did get home alright and got a new tire and picked her back up yesterday. Got to wait to take her back out again now till i change the remaining tires. When i bought the car i was told the tires were good and they looked awesome (the remaining three still look great) with no cracks and tons of tread. Turns out however the inside was toast and when i came down the hill and put max pressure on that front corner it just blew it out, oh well hopefully a new set of kumhos in my future.

The weather is starting to get nice. I feel a weekend of RX-7 TLC. Yeah it is going to rain, but that is why rotary gods invented garages... Just 5 more weekends to get ready for DGRR. Do I sound like I am looking forward to DGRR?

Me too Mike. For 2015 we should rent both cabins and get Phil to schedule DG on a different weekend from the Mitty.

Then we could look forward to two great weekends. (What's his problem, anyway?)

Hey, is that you in the lead? And me second car from last? Next year will be different, I can assure you.

Does anybody in the OGTA universe have a 10A? Here's a nice looking set of apex seals for one coming up on ebay tomorrow.

They look like carbon, how cool is that?

And a couple photos of my recent progress, I should have that puppy pulled by sundown:

I want to see what's inside of it Brett. Haven't you ever wondered what a rotor looks like?

Yeah ray what's the plan with the 83? Are you going to just get a running engine possiblely 13b ;-) or rebuild that 12a?

No 13Bs, or other FC parts in my RX-7.

I'll redo the 12A. It's a sweety, only 125k miles and lots of compression, just had some coolant leaking into the combustion chambers. A prime rebuild.

And that tranny is real fine, are there any differences between the 83 and 84 trannys? I like that 83.

doesn't have to be from an fc ray.

gear ratios in the tranny i think is the only differences. but i could be wrong.

Ray, I've heard of these coolant leaks in the engine before. How common is that?

First time I've had the coolant leak, lots of white smoke in the exhaust, kind of like a sea foam treatment. It's probably related to the failed radiator and cooling problem experienced by the PO.

But I don't mind, Crit always says the best time to rebuild a rotary is before self destructs, so hopefully this one won't have any internal problems. I know that all six apex seals are floating nicely, first time I've seen that in a 12A.

"O" ring failure allowing coolant into the combustion chamber. only fix is rebuild.
