Well if you're not, then you'll know when your motor blows.

well i dont have any semi-flat yet so right now its krylon primer that is the dark color, the lighter **** is that cheapass walmart crap. I even wetsanded both fenders, doors, and the rear quarters so its all mostly smooth. I intend on trying to fiberglass the left rear where it was hit hard by a guardrail, and MAYBE grind out the bondo on the right rear behind the door and replace....might not though, but once i get more semiflat the roof and the doors will get a fresh coat or 3 of it.

It's a monochrome Skittle... I've never tasted the grey Skittles but I imagine they're pretty awful and tasteless. Mooostly black, eh? Ppppppaaaaiiiiinnntt!

Speaking of bodywork, doubt anyone noticed my fixed spot on the Cheeto...

That's what I started out with... a giant rust hole and someone else's failed attempt at bodywork. I used a rotary grinder to grind out that rust, leaving very little metal. Just enough to use as a rough skeleton to mold some fiberglass over...

I trimmed the fiberglass, and then applied bondo and glazing putty over it to get everything smooth and to recreate the bodyline. After that I sanded and grinded out the top mess, and applied bondo and putty to it as well. Then I topped it all off with a rattle primer, primer sealer, basecoat, and clearcoat... wetsanding inbetween. When I get more paint I'll match up the rocker panel and maybe work on the door a bit. Here's what it looks like now, same as it did at the autocross:

Nothing like Duplicolor paint 'n' bodywork in the driveway!

But yes im still mostly black, entire front end and engine bay is in fact black and so is most of the rear.

Thanks guys. I'll tell ya right now, fiberglass is hard stuff to work with. It's probably better to make a solid piece beforehand and then graft it in with bondoglass. It took me two tries to get a piece to lay on there right.

oh and get this, those "bumps" i attributed to being rust? Turns out it was bondo that had bubbled up. Not to mention all the other bits of bondo and glass that were slathered on and not properly sanded over, as well as the factory pinstriping that was beneath all the **** the sprayed over top the crappy body work, which was even done to both fenders....

Thankfully I have freshy fenders to put on as well as newer mouldings, just gotta go and get some double sided 3M tape and more primer and semi-flat black.

And Jimi im surprised you havent just went ahead and did all the bodywork and paint to the cheeto yet. Youve got nearly as much time in the day to do it, and more knowledge on how to do it than I do. I would have tried to redo all the bondo and crap on mine if I knew anything about working with that crap, but I dont so I didnt even bother.

Eh, I've started to do some of the bodywork, it just takes forever and there's really no point in perfecting the body until I can put real paint over it. I don't have a working gun anymore (TII kilt it) or a garage in which to paint. That and it's my daily driver, so having it apart for weeks on end like I did with the TII just won't work.

true enough, im going to try while im back at the house in dandridge to redo the right side rear and do a bit more to the left rear, and probably get most of my S5 mouldings ready to be installed. Just sucks that the walmart primer came out so ****** white... I could live with the dark grey of the krylon primer, but that white just doesnt work at all. Hell by the next time the car is viewed publicly it might be semi-flat black from the nose to...almost the rear...save 3-4 patches that will stay primer. Thank god for large garages and when im back in Dandridge ill even have a 3.3hp 20gal air compressor to help work a sander.

And what kind of spray gun do you need jimi? I remember seeing at least 2 professional grade paint guns in the garage last I looked, they werent gravity feed but Id trust em since they were my greatgrandfathers, and he never bought cheap tools....

I only use gravity fed HVLP. I need a good one but there's no point in throwing down that much money unless I have somewhere to paint cars.

aye, the gen1 needs some lovins too jeremy, pretty it up so when you get it running good again it can sit with the cheeto to give some competition. And see Jimi, you guys are using the super guns and nice paints, im givin it the ol krylon special to see how well it works out ^^b

And you dont really "Have" to take it all apart Jimi, just tape it all off real good and hit the outside of it, at least if your doing it in about the same color as your doorjambs and engine bay, though from the looks of it a new lower valence or lip and maybe some lower profile marker lights would look great with the no mouldings look you got goin.
