Haven't been many post lately. I have been doing about the same kind of stuff.. I am working on a Dirt Late Model Stock car this week, Needs a new front clip. Driver decided to test it against a Jersey Barrier. Barrier won!

 

We finished the Rayburn late Model chassis re-clip job today, all ready at the owners place to get the motor and body so he can race Saturday night.

Clip job turned out very well, was able to straighten most of the chassis and fab new front section and get the suspension back to Manufacturer Specs plus a few minor updates from us.

 

Ok people, start posting your pictures. I know there are cages and chassis being built, lets see them.

I am posting the link to a page from my photobucket account. It is of a cage we cut out of a C5R Corvette that was done last year. It is supposed to be a 4130 cage to meet the specs for Salt flats Racing. Car went and was refused, they really is no explanation why the builder/shop let this out of the door. I know who the shop was but I will not say since I did not actually see the car there.

Cage is one of the worst I have ever seen and I am guessing the material is not 4130 and the bending is horrible.

T1 Viper redo (semi before/lateral bar and windshield bar already done):

Redid the lateral bar (moved it outward and changed the bend angle), changed the angle of the diagonal and raised the harness bar so that a new seat could be installed. Owner is about 6'6" and had to tilt his head to drive it, the belts came off his shoulder, angled down about 30 deg, through the seat, then back up 30 deg to the shelf as the orig. harness bar was useless for him!

ACK! Good thing they brought the Vette to you Russ! That cage had roundy round builder written all over it!

 

It was worse than that. It was done buy a shop just south of me that does super gas cars. Owner came by today and checked out progress. He told me the car was done at that shop because he went by every day to see the work each day . He lives just mins from the shop. Now he has to drive 45 mins to see me.

Everything was illegal. worst thing the SCTA rules for Bonneville are one page long. How could a shop screw that up?

 

First, I think the Vette cage was done at a Midas Muffler shop.

Here is a pic I dug up of a 914 I did for a guy running vintage. There are still a few bars to add but the guy didn't want to climb over them while assembling the rest of the car. I'll get other shots as I go.

The car is getting a real 6 cyl put in it but he didn't want the 914-6 bubble flares. I had to put in new floors, the body looked like a bag a coconuts when I started. I also painted it.

 

I am really having an issue with this cage we are building for the vette. Damn car has a removable glass top which has handles and gizmos all over the place. There is a huge frame around the glass to clamp on to. When the top is off it looks like the cage doesnt fit the top. With it on it fits great. Oh well, it looks a million times better than it did and I will pass tech. I will post the pics tomorrow.

914 looks great. I want to get back in to restoration again of old race cars. Good fun!

 

Hey Scott that looks familiar...

 

I thought you might have some issues with the glass top crap. Huge about of mass to have to worm your way around to get anything to fit snug. Probably where the first builder started running into problems.

 

Hrmmm... John, I'm digging the sleeve idea on the main doorbar. I tend to run the main bar of the X a little higher on the Hoop attachment point so I can access the weld through the side window. I'm going to borrow that sleeve idea if I ever get a driver over 6' that sitting on the floor!

I dunno how guys race the 944's. I haven't been able to fit one yet once I install the seat where the drivers want it. 944's must attract short torsoed drivers.

 

We are done enough. Rules for the Salts are really straight forward and simple. Leaves alot for interpretation. Gussets at all the joints and recommended that they be spot welded to the outside of the joint. ???

I am happy with it except for the top, looks like a Tard did it. Everything fits so well except for the top. Oh well, top will be on most of the time.



Used swing outs, not in the rule book but I did not see anywhere where it said I couldn't do it. If it is a problem he can weld it up once he is there.









It leaves tomorrow. Then it will come back for all of th window nets. Yeah!

 

Hey Guys...here are a few pix of a street 4pt bar that John at Berg Racing did for me. Its a bolt in bar, the main hoop bolts to plates that were welded to the crossbeam behind the seats, and the rear bars use a plate sandwich thru the wheel well. Been wanting one of these for a long, long time...Thanks John!!!

Nice Job, if there is anybody out there I totally admire it is John, He does really great work. He is a total inspiration. Really professional job.

Everything I do is based off people that I know and I think how would they do it and then I try to make it better. I really think between the shops that post here our quality has improved because of the competition.

Now I have to do a bolt in bar! Damn!! LOL!!!!

btw...a question i must ask. why is it that nobody ever welds the cage to the actually chassis of the car? if you look at my 2nd and 3rd picture you'll se what im talking about on my hoop. i welded it to the side of the car for extra strength. then again im also not going out of a rule book...

is there anything wrong with this install? other then the fact that it's not a full roll cage; that's the long term plan, after i graduate and have more money to work with. i had my rotary specialist install it, and he's never done a roll bar before. please take a look, and let me know what you think. thanks in advance.

 

The rule book thing is usually the issue. You are correct about it adding strength. Its actually better to have the cage away from the chassis and the bridge the gap somehow. Like on the "A" pillar, it would be better to have the cage a few inches away and then fill the gap with a flat plate that goes the length of the pillar. Even with holes punched in it, it will give more strength. Think of an I beam, it gets strength from the vertical shear plate more than the top and bottom plate.

Latest project is a muffler for a VW of all things that I just built...

Its been a awhile, I thought I would share with all what we have been doing.

Had to repair an Auto Cross chassis that biffed the fence and curb pretty hard at Portland International Raceway 3 weeks ago.



Bent the frame and all of the suspension parts.



Made all the suspension arms adjustable, customer had to pull all the fasteners to make the adjustments.







Car turned out very nice and customer was excited in getting it back in a week.
