Ok, Ok, so I was one of the 8 he took for a ride. What an awesome ride. The car as well as its experienced pilot were incredible. If anything will get you hooked on tracking it is a ride with Fritz. Not that I already wasn't hooked but this just made me that much more resolute. I am glad that Shawn and myself made the trip up to VIR to watch. I tried to get signed up for the event but I was too late getting my car back together and when I went to sign up for it, it closed.

As for your times man, they were incredible. Being that the Radical was the only car on the track that could touch you, and it was a fully prepared prototype car w/ a seq box and full aero that sat an inch off the ground literally, that is pretty darn good. Thanks for the ride and I'll have to get you to instruct me when I come up there next time. I'm looking forward to it.

I'm going to VIR with Audi on the full course in a couple of weeks and then I'll be on the N course in mid April with Porsche.

hey fritz, good to hear your out whoppin with the KB again :-)

mine is down for the count after sothign major happened (bearing went i think) in the last session on the last day of the NASA roadamerica event thius past weekend. I had a blast the entire weekend and the car was great (up unitil the last session when it went bad)
I ended up with the fastest HPDE time of the weekend so the car was flyin :-)

...there is rumor of a few guys here goin to VIR later in the year and I will probably join them, I'll check with you once i find out more so we can hook up and have some fun out there.... as for now, im organizing hte rebuild for the track beast.

 

Damian, hope your talking about the June VIR Grand event. Sure would be cool to meet some the forum regulars as I'm registered for that event. Been quite the hiiatus since i've been on track... almost 4 years!

So how'z bout it Fritz, any plans for that event?

Just uploaded the video capturing a couple of laps during the time trial on Sunday. It's actually kind of boring but I wanted it up for myself
All three laps were 1.16s which I'm very happy with.

I'll view the other tape when I have some time and upload a vid with some action on it.

The Killer BEE is on a roll. Just won my group at the autox today and 2nd overall behind a GT3.

Who said a t78 isn't made for autocrossing. Definitely a handful but I had a blast. It was a pretty short choppy course. I actually had to go down into first gear for a couple different sections.

Next Monday I'll be on the full course at VIR. Can't wait

how in the heck does the killer bee fit in ASP ???

a few years ago over here, my stock 95 fd with only a boost controller put it out of asp and into BP os some silly unlimited class. obviously our yellow track cars are no longer even close to stock.

 

I doubt the Bee is street prepared HE HE. The next time I'll sign up for SPO. The important thing is there's an FD running some decent times

 

A pretty liberal region, no doubt. Hear in the NW, FDs can get away with murder for club racing (My car is legal in ITE), though no longer for time trials thanks to SCCA mental midgets.

For time trials the new classing relegates my car to TT-2 (5.7 liters to 8 liter or equivalent)! Rotaries get a multipler of two. Then multiply by 3 for non-stock turbo.

Hey Fritz, what kind of times do you run on the full course? 1:16s is pretty damned fast for the south course!

 

I've never really pushed it on the full course but it runs 2:11s all day long even with a little traffic

1:23s at Summit

With some nice tires and good conditions I think a 2:09 would be realistic.

 

Wow! 2:11 is VERY fast! Must be those huge tires and brakes, and a little bit of skill...

Is this in the car with the street-port running 11PSI? Have you dynoed that thing?

The best I've managed is 2:13 in the Shell car, and that was an almost traffic-free lap. I'm certain a better driver in my car could cut at least a couple seconds off my time.

 

It's not the tires or the brakes it's the 325 plus rwhp (strictly a butt dyno) This car has manual brakes with Brembo big reds in the front and 12.9 inch or so rotors. IMO the stock ABS system with some AP 5200s with 13" rotors and 99 brakes in the back work much better. Usually I run 285 30 18s or 275 40 17s. During the time trial on Sunday I used 285 30 18 Hoosiers in the rear with 265 35s in the front. These tires were 2 years old and 1/2 way used but they were the stickiest tires I've used yet on this car which means it will be absolutely sick with some new hoosiers on it. This setup pushed a little but the braking was much better because of the larger grippier tires in the rear. With equal tires front and rear the rears tend to lock first when threshold braking which is not the optimum situation for car control or braking confidence.

With a full cage and the weight down to 2600 the car is also very stiff and handles incredibly well. If your in tune with it you can do no wrong but if your not it will bite you in a hurry. 1000lb springs in the front and 700 in the rear. It's very scary in the rain

t78 boosting around 10 or 11lbs. The engine has a street port and was built by SR motorsports. Very strong well tuned engine.

 

Interesting - I haven't played around with different tire sizes front and rear. My car definitely rotates most of the time on VIR, but going down South Bend and up the Esses it will push (especially South Bend). I run 245/45-16 Hoosiers on the factory 16x8 wheels. That's why I mentioned your "huge tires"...

I'm running factory brakes, and I do get a bit of rear lockup occassionally. I tried running Hawk Blues in the front and Hawk Blacks in the rear, and it seems to have helped.

I'm wondering what lap times you could turn in my car; or rather, how far I'm off the pace!

Fritz what kind of suspension are you running? and alignment setting?

 

If you're running 1:24s at Summit in any car you're doing pretty well so you're certainly not off the pace by any means. A well driven GT3 race car goes around at about a 1:19. Are you signed off for seat time at Summit? If so lets meet there for some laps together before you sell that beast.

2:13s at VIR is also very fast for any type of FD.

I'm guessing you spend more time at Summit though

 

It has the ground control coilovers with Advanced Design shocks.

Tripoint front sway with all the goodies and a some sort adj rear sway. Both bars are set stiff.

Negative camber is pretty aggressive (for an fd that is) both front and rear. I'd say atleast 1.5 to 2 up front and .5 to 1 in the back.

I havn't touched anything in regard to the alignment because the car is perfect as it is. Tires wear right down the middle and the handling is perfect. If it's well balanced it will push slightly and begin oversteer as you apply gas. You can easily produce over steer with a quick lift or trail braking. Basically it does anything you ask. IOW It's an excellent dance partner

 

I've only done one BSR event at Summit, and it was a FATT about 6 years ago. I do SCCA events and NASA HPDEs mostly. I'm not signed off with BSR, but maybe they'd accept an SCCA license. How much is seat time? What day(s) do they have them?

You're right - I have spent more time at Summit. It's a lot closer to me, but I still prefer VIR over Summit. I love VIR! Sucks that it's 5.5 hours away...
